Paging Dr. Wartenberg (Oh, Yeah!)

Whether you're new to BDSM, a seasoned veteran or just apt to playing a little game of doctor, this toy will more than meet your expectations. It has a solid construction, a sexy, clinical air that would send shivers up your spine. The shivers means it's working! Dr. Wartenberg, if you could see your brainchild now... ;)

Use

Wartenberg wheels are wonderful little instruments that should be in everyone's toy box (or examination room, or dungeon, or wherever the magic happens for you!). It's an excellent toy for teasing and it carries all the sinister-looking "presence" you could ever want from a BDSM toy without too much of the "responsibility". I'm not saying that this toy isn't something that shouldn't be handled with care! Like all toys, you should always be careful and attune to your partner's desires and level of comfort during use. What I mean is that despite this toy looking like a bona fide weapon of torture, it would take some serious sadistic will to inflict blood-drawing pain onto your partner with proper use. The needles on the pinwheel do pack a bite, but you would seriously need to push into the skin to puncture the flesh. Unless you or your partner are okay with the risk, it's best not to try.

This toy would prove delightful for temperature play, teasing, sensory play or a game of doctor!

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

The design is tops! It's on par with a true medical instrument. The Wartenberg wheel was originally an instrument of neurological testing and this feels like you up and took one from a 1950s medical examination room (and I mean this in the best way possible)! It's a solid, chrome instrument with a handle that is comfortable and easy to hold on to. It doesn't look cheesy, "proppy" or cheaply made, which is a BIG plus in my book.
    • Multiple ways to use
    • Well made / sturdy

Performance

This toy was a tantalizing dream. It caught attention when I ran it over most places and even raised hairs when dragged over others! When chilled or slightly heated, the sensations it sent through my own or my partner's flesh were sublime. The cold spikes were truly hair raising (in the best way) and when warmed (but not too much), it was almost like a pleasant, dull ache. This toy holds up well even when room temperature. Though the spikes tend to feel a bit on the cold side, it's a lovely, distinct sensation that I think most people can enjoy.
    • Holds up to use well

Care and Maintenance

I wouldn't recommend sharing this toy. Some rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution could probably sterilize the pointy pinwheel nicely but one thing is to be kept in mind and that is that for all intents and purposes it is a medical instrument. Sharing a Wartenberg wheel would be like sharing a speculum or something of the sorts. Not quite as risky as sharing say, a syringe, but better safe than sorry here, folks!
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Personal comments

I'm sure this has probably been said multiple times in other reviews but history is so interesting! Dr. Robert Wartenberg was a neurologist who invented the Wartenberg wheel as a means of testing nerve sensitivities. Wouldn't he be so proud?

If it's truly metal, then it is non-porous and so a quick douse in rubbing alcohol means that it could easily be shared between multiple partners. If you would happen to draw blood then the cleaning should be something along the lines of a 10% bleach solution I think but still....it's non-porous.

And speculums are not disposable in a doctor's office. They clean them and use the same on the next person, unless it's a surgery situation. Metal is wonderful for this sort of thing.
