Wartenberg Funwheel

This item is one of my favorites. I recommend it for beginners or experienced players alike. There is a variety of pressures and places to use this and it makes for quite a bit of foreplay. It is wonderful sliding across the skin, and has always given me the chills! It is listed as BDSM, but any vanilla couple can use this as a teasing foreplay toy as well. Don't let the looks of it intimidate you!

Use

This tool was originally used for medical purposes to test sensation on skin. It is actually great for medical play as thus, one can be the nurse or doctor and "test" sensations. This is also used in BDSM play with sensation a lot. One must be careful as the pins are sharp and CAN pierce the skin. I see a lot of people say it can't but I have seen first hand the skin stitching look that it leaves when it pierces in multiple places. This is best used to run at a medium to light pressure over the skin. Across any part of the body, though you'll want to use different pressures at different places. I personally like the soft tickle feel it has run at a light pressure across skin, though some people prefer the "imaginary cutting" sensation it offers at a more intense pressure. My best advice if you haven't used one is try it on yourself first so that you know exactly how hard you can press and where without cutting or piercing the skin. Sensory deprivation works well with this. One can blindfold their partner and it creates a wonderful feeling to try to figure out where you're going with the wheel, and the light sensation across the skin is quite nice to experience. This toy can be cooled or warmed for temperature play if you fancy, which creates a completely new experience from just using it as normal.

This is relatively small, at 6 3/4" long. It is a shiny chrome finish, that is probably either stainless steel or stainless steel plated. I wouldn't trust it to get wet or stay wet though. Always wipe it off so that it won't rust or risk rusting in any case. The wheel is on a little pin that holds it in place. Should it ever get stuck or get hard to turn, much like any gear or rotary you can use WD-40, and spray a little bit where it actually rotates and it will be smooth again. Sometimes they need oiling. This one either comes pre-oiled or just doesn't have a problem turning. It works smoothly and does not get caught. It features a wheel full of sharp pins that can puncture the skin with enough pressure. Don't be afraid of it for this though! However, used gently it creates a wonderful sensation that can give chills. I think if taken care of properly it will last a long time too, it is a quality toy.

Performance

I love this toy. It is one of my favorites in the sensation play bag. It performs well and I've used one for a while without any problems. This will actually hold up to wear, and as mentioned, if it gets to where it doesn't turn well, WD-40 will fix it. I have seen this used for needle play, or cutting play, but I don't use it for that personally.

The amount of pressure you use on this decides on how your partner will feel. The sensation is similar to someone lightly caressing your skin with a fingertip if you lightly roll it across the skin. If you press a little harder, it's a slight push of pressure, followed by the caressing sensation. It gives me chills personally. The harder you bare down on it, the more the sensation begins to feel like a sharp pin prick, but it still continues to have this caressing sensation all the while. Also the faster you roll it, the more it becomes a tickling quick sensation. The slow rolling can create a bit of suspense. My favorite places to use this are on the inside of the thigh, the abdominal area, upper arms, and lower back. I think it does a good job at the light pressure and a slower pace in these places. I like to tease my partner this way.

For being such a scary looking toy, it gives more feel-good than any other toy I've used. When it rolls, it makes a squeaky noise. The handle is easy to hold and is comfortable. This is an over all good toy for any couples. I've seen it used for teasing and foreplay in vanilla couples, all the way to the other end of the spectrum of BDSM piercing. It doesn't have to be intimidating, even if it looks it! That's why I think it's great for regular vanilla couples too. I can't stress enough how good this feels dragged across my skin.
    • Comfortable during use
    • Easy to put on / use
    • Holds up to use well

Care and Maintenance

This comes in a snug fitting plastic cover that will keep the pins from stabbing anything. My case is holding up well, but I recommend you continue to store it in there to keep your toy safe and lasting longer. You can easily rinse this off and then wipe it dry to clean it should you end up getting lube or anything on it. Also dropping it in a cleaning solution such as bleach and then rinsing it off and drying will sterilize it for you.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

The Wartenberg pinwheel comes in a small plastic snug package as aforementioned, which works great for storing it. It doesn't say anything on the package so it is relatively discreet. Most people will think it's some sort of torture device when they see it anyway, and will probably not know what it's for.
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Good for storage
    • Minimal

Personal comments

Don't be afraid of harming your partner with this. It can be used for "needle play" by using it to pierce; however, I've never personally used it that way, and it doesn't have to be used that way. As I said, this was originally an instrument used to see if you could feel it moving. It is amazing for just rolling across the skin lightly, it may look scary, but it really provides a wonderful of sensation.

Experience

This is my favorite toy. I can only say I'm completely biased because I love sensual and soft trailing of fingers on skin. I love anything that can give me chills. This toy does that. It can be used at various speeds and pressures to create such a unique and enjoyable experience. Different people react differently to it, as my partner likes it to be used rougher and for needle play, however I enjoy just quick runs or slow runs on my back. I really do recommend this to anyone who wants a new toy for foreplay and teasing.
Follow-up commentary
This is still a favorite of the toybox. I have yet to find any cons to it, and the wheel is still working fine with no wearing out, no tearing up or anything. It still works fantastic and is still in great shape.

  • Wartenberg Storage
    • Writing my review made me wonder -- has anyone had rust issues with the pinwheel sold here?
    • Interesting question. Since it's chrome plaited steel, I would assume it could possibly rust because chrome does oxidize over time.

Can't say that I have had rust issues - it's made of chrome-plated brass from what I've observed. My #1 problem with my wheels (regardless of source) is that you're pretty much on your own to find a suitable sheath - they will poke through many materials, and I've had at least one that poked through something and bent the tines.

That one does not get used in play.

  • Wartenberg Pinwheel: Any On The Way?
    • I'm literally aching to snag one of the Wartenberg Pinwheels link but they're sold out and I'd like to know when they'll be back, or maybe if theres one stray floating about the inventory from the move... I don't like the Fetish Fantasies one, it looks so cheap and less intense (a bad thing for me).

Does any of the warehouse people know if there's anymore of these buggers lying around? I just want 1! :(
    • I'll let the product manager know about this. Thanks for asking.
    • Hello ShadowKitten! The pinwheels are currently on order and we are hoping to have them available by the end of the week, so just hold on and they will be in soon.

  • Wartenberg Pinwheel
    • I'm curious to see if anyone's tried using a sewing tracing wheel as a less-intense alternative, or first step to using a Wartenberg pinwheel?
    • why would you want a less intense toy. The wheel is not all that bad.
    • The Wartenberg pinwheel is only as intense as you want it to be. If you lightly trace it over the skin, it isn't at all prickly, but the harder you press, the more intense it becomes.

  • Finally! The Pinwheel!
    • I was uber excited to see that the Wartenberg pinwheel will soon become available at Eden, but does nayone have any more info about it? Will toys from the Stockroom soon be available here? This totally makes my day!

      Thanks :D
    • I was definitely excited too, cannot wait to get it!
    • I'm super excited too and can't wait to buy one. Finally all of us squeaky wheels got our wish ;)

I think we're only carrying like one or two things from Stockroom.

I asked Maxim, our Product Manager, to hop in here and let us know when these will be in stock and all that jazz.
