Boy butter review

Boy Butter is my favorite lube for play with silicone toys in the shower. It is a great lube for anal play and I also enjoy using it for masturbation. Keep it away from latex condoms and it can be a useful addition to any lube collection.
Published: April 1, 2008
Pros:
Lasts longer in the shower than water based lubes and is safe for use with silicone toys.
Cons:
Clean up is not as easy as with water based lubes. Not to be used with latex condoms.

extremely useful review
What is the first thing you think of when someone says personal lubricant? For most of us, we probably think of some form of water-based lube right away. This makes sense because this type of lube is by far the most popular. Silicone-based lubes have started receiving more attention lately because they tend to last longer - especially in water. One type of lube has essentially been marginalized, namely oil-based lube. One major reason for this is that oil-based lubes are not safe to use with latex based products (most condoms and many toys). On the other hand, oil-based lubes last a long time and are water resistant but they can stain fabrics and can be difficult to clean up. Oil-based lubes can really be split into two categories, petroleum-based and natural-based. Petroleum oil-based are generally avoided because they are not good for vaginal play. Natural oil-based lubes are okay for vaginal use, but are more likely to irritate sensitive vaginas than water-based lubes. So, why should you even consider oil-based lube? Because it lasts longer in water and can be used with silicone toys.

Boy Butter is an excellent example of a natural oil-based lubricant. Its base it both coconut oil and an organic silicone which are homogenized like butter which is how it earns its “Churn Style” name. There is a little bit of separation, so don’t expect it to look like margarine in the tub. Since it is in that little tub, it's easy to grab and apply, I just dip my fingertips in, pull out as much as I want, and spread it wherever I need it. Although it has silicone as a major ingredient, I have never had a problem with my 100% silicone toys. In fact, it is my lube of choice in the shower with my silicone toys, but I have used it outside the shower for anal and vaginal penetration as well without incident. It is supposed to clean-up pretty well with water alone, but I usually use soap during the cleanup regardless. It also is not supposed to stain fabric, but since we haven’t gotten it on any fabrics (that we know of), I don’t feel I should comment on that.

I will say that I think Boy Butter is a very good lube. Although its applicability might be less than water based lubricants, I still feel it can definitely fill a need especially amongst males whether homosexual or heterosexual. In fact, I can see how it might be a very useful product in male homosexual relationships. The one complaint I have with it is that it does tend to separate a little bit, so it is not quite as “homogenized” as I would like.
Follow-up commentary
I've had Boy Butter for a very long time now. It still remains my favorite lube for solo time in the shower. Silicone lube is great for this use too, but it is incompatible with some silicone toys, and I have a lot of silicone toys, so this tends to be an issue. I've never had a compatibility issue with Boy Butter, so it is great for use with toys in the shower or bath. It also works well as a jack off lube which I usually do in the shower just to make clean up easier. If it was acceptable for vaginal sex, Boy Butter would be just about perfect. My medicine cabinet is always going to have a good water-based lube, a good silicone lube, and a good natural oil-based lube, and Boy Butter fits the bill very well for oil-based lube and I don't foresee another lube taking over its spot any time soon.

  • Safe for silicone?
    • My partner often experiences pain and discomfort during pegging when we use water based lubricants. He loves silicone lubes but they are not compatible with most of the cocks I use on him for anal. We've gotten in the habit of using natural oils for play, and they seem to be working best.

So that brings me to Boy Butter: has anyone here had any problems using it with silicone? I'm looking to invest in some but I'm not sure if it'll be compatible.

      Thanks for your help, everyone!
    • Based on Dwtim's Lube Compatibility Workshop, oil based lube should be fine with silicone. However, looking at Boy Butter, it contains phenyl trimethicone which I assume is a type of silicone. This may cause a reaction.

Yes, that was the ingredient that was concerning me. I guess I'll test it and find out!
