What influences how you rate reviews?

Contributor: Ms. N Ms. N
What areas do you find most important? These are the things that will cause you to give a higher rating if they are in a review, and a lower rating if they are not, or things that draw you into the review when they are good, and distract you when they are bad.

My basic rule is "If I were thinking of buying this toy, how helpful would I find this review in making my decision?" Then I rate the review accordingly. So I checked the items on the poll that I think would relate to that.

The two non-essential, but bonus factors are photos and humor. I will give an EU to a really good review that has neither, but often the presence of photos or humor or both will influence me to give a higher rating than I would have done without it.

I care most about reviews that look and read like a lot of time was put into them. I cannot STAND incredibly short reviews and there's no way that a short review can have all the information needed. This also ties in with the amount of detail. Information has to be accurate or they won't get a good rating from me. For example, I once read a review for a silicone vibrator that said it could be used anally and could be sterilized via the dishwasher and the like. Obviously, this is not true because a dishwasher would ruin the motor and the base wasn't flared (and it wasn't overly-lengthy) so it wasn't safe for anal. If I voted (I can't remember), it didn't get a good rating from me. I don't care if there is humor in the review and it won't get a higher rating from me if it has it, unless it is paired with good details about the toy. I don't want to be entertained (though I appreciate it); I want to be informed. If there are pictures and exterior links, that's a nice bonus but it usually won't affect my rating. This is especially true for certain reviews that use pictures as a crutch. They think that just because they took a picture of the toy that they don't have to put a lot of details into their review. Wrong. Very wrong. When I look at a review at first that has pictures, I mentally take the pictures out and see how long their review REALLY is. If it's incredibly short otherwise, I'll usually pass it up for another review to read instead.

Longer isn't always better! Lol. The top, main thing that determines my rating is: did the person include enough information to leave me with a good idea of what to expect with this product. Humor and all those extra, cute things are always a plus, but not everybody can be funny in every review.

I've seen reviews a page long and I've seen them only half a page long. I've seen reviews that are shorter than most and the writer has managed to include still plenty of detail. It's not about length. If that was the case why bother writing anything useful, instead just write for length?

I also like to hear what the person's experience was. If there's size, material and what it does and what it doesn't do, that's great. Still, I need to hear a little about what was bad and good and how it can be used.

I don't believe in rating harshly. I mean if someone did not even take the time to include enough info for me to at least have an idea of what the product will do, I might rate less than wonderful. If they clearly tried to include everything and maybe missed something along the way, why lower their rating? I simply rate it and leave a comment to let them know they left a detail out.

Mostly, I think people rate on how they feel about the person. I've seen it a lot. I've seen many people rate low on someone's review that included EVERYTHING. I usually just end up thinking a little low about someone who does that all the time. I don't understand it.

I totally agree with this!

A reviewer's job is not to entertain, but if they do that's great. Still the bottom line is: I'm a customer who might buy this toy, tell me what I should expect.

I've had someone rate less than wonderful on my reviews twice now (including a "somewhat useful" on a review with all other ratings being "extremely useful") because they voted for one of my reviews what I voted for one of theirs. They didn't even read mine. They just gave me what I gave them out of retaliation. I was really peeved.

Kendra, I always notice you giving good feedback to new reviewers. I think that's really awesome that you do that.

As for length, some items just don't need as much length as others. There just isn't going to be all that much to say about a blindfold, vs what you need to say about a luxury vibrator. Also some writers are better at writing succinctly than others. Often a long review will have the same information stated in several sections (I do this) because of the way the extended format divides things up. You'll end up talking about what silicone is like in the Use section, the Care section, the Design section, and probably a few others. A better writer, or a more experienced reviewer, may be better at covering this information without repeating themselves as much.

I'm pretty generous though. If someone has taken the time to write a review, then it has to be downright terrible for me to rate it poorly. (I remember on another site, this guy showed up and would review items by saying "This is the hottest item. We used it the other night at our swingers party, where I was wearing nothing but an apron and serving drinks to the ladies..." and his dumb fantasy would go on from there, making sure to cover how many orgasms he had, and how hot the women were, with only the slightest mention of whatever toy he was claiming to review. His reviews disappeared from the site, so I guess he got banned or something.)

Well, it has to be written well enough so that I can read it without getting a headache from errors. The sentence structure should flow at least somewhat. That's just basic English requirements, and a bare minimum for anything that one writes from review to letter to term paper.

I then look for details and accuracy. Were all my questions answered? Did it answer even questions I hadn't thought to ask? Did I really learn something about the product from the review other than that you liked/did not like it?

My "others" are photos and experience. I'm very visual and ADD. I have a hard time reading through blocks of texts without photos. I get distracted and just can't concentrate that long. Learning style wise, reading three paragraphs about how something looks will never be the same as just showing it to me. So having the written and visual element is really important for me to be able to get a good grasp of a product.

Experience is super important. Yes, knowing about the material and cleaning and functions and all that is great. At the end of the day, we all buy toys because we want them to work! So did it? If it did, why do you think that was? If not, why do you think it didn't? So more than just "this sucked" or "this was awesome" is needed to cover my experience requirement.

I'm pretty picky with my EU votes because I'm a bit of a perfectionist and very detail oriented. Generally, I don't vote if I can't vote EU. Partially because I don't want to deal with drama and partially because I know my standards are really high and most people just won't meet them.

Accurate information and enough of it to not leave me wondering what it really is that they reviewed are most important for me. I like to read reviews that people I "follow" felt the need to leave a comment on, whether it is something I would use myself or not.

I often read reviews for items I have little to no use for (I don't have the anatomy for a Fleshlight, but I enjoy reading the reviews). Having said that though, I buy all of our sex toys, so I actually have some frame of reference when it comes to the "male oriented" toys as well. If I can't figure out from the review if my guy could use it or not, I don't rate them as highly (think Useful rather than Extremely useful). And if the whole review reads more or less like "I used it and liked/didn't like it, end of story", well there is where I mark them further down. I do try to leave comments so that the writer can go back and improve it or at least get better with the next review!

I tend to ramble, so most of my reviews tend to be on the long side...I do try to get all the info in too though!

An extremely useful review answers every single question I have about the product.

A useful review answers most of my questions about the product.

A somewhat useful review answers some of my questions about the product.

A worth reading, but not useful review answers a few of my questions, but not most.

A review that's not useful at all does not describe the product in sufficient detail to answer my questions or detail what the product is like.

I rate new reviewers fairly high. They are trying to cover their bases and get the info out, some of them do so immediately, others need a bit of encouragement to boost their confidence. I do try to add a few tips for better reviews in the future.

I rate reviews from more experienced reviewers a bit more strictly. I want to know the details of an item prior to purchasing. I do not care about awesome and horrible, but the motor strength, girth, measurements and what uses were implemented. How easy is it to clean, etc. Sometimes the reviews are short, there might not be much to describe after the basics. I do not rate on length, but on quality.

Amount of detail for me. It is pretty evident to me at a quick glance if the reviewer spent 15 minutes on the review. If that's the case, I tend to rate it lower.

There are a lot of things that are important to me. Good grammar is one thing but if a person has put a lot of work into a review, I'm not overly frustrated by the grammar.

I like pictures and will tend to upgrade my ratings if there is a picture and it is relevant. For instance - don't just show me the vibrator - shoe it to me next to something so I can get an idea of size.

I love humor in a review. I won't downgrade if its not there but I am more likely to upgrade my vote or nominate it for a rumble if it is there.

I really prefer it if measurements are in a review because it saves me from continually going back to the product page to check it out. Many many times I come to a review from someone's comments on my wall and I haven't gone directly to the product information.

Tell me why you like it or why you don't like it - and/or who you think it might be good for. Don't just say "I hated it". Who knows - I might like it because we have different tastes.

Certain reviewers I do expect more from - I'm going to use Antipova as an example (cause I've asked her to hit me with a wet noodle if the quality of my reviews goes down). Her reviews are always awesome - if I came across a new one that wasn't - I'd probably contact her privately and ask if everything is ok. Same with some of the reviewers with 100+ reviews.

However, as I experienced this week with my G-Ki - there are times when the product has been reviewed so many times that it feels like there's nothing to say that is new or insightful. Yet - if you have to do the review(buyout assignment) - then you HAVE to do it- know what I mean?

In a case like that - I would probably tend to cut the reviewer a bit of slack and think, "This was just a really hard one to write" and probably not vote on it because I could tell something was wrong.

I do have someone who I swear reads most of my reviews and deliberately chooses to down-vote me. I realized tonight that if I choose to follow them - I can then see how they're rating others and seeing if maybe they're doing this just for points or if they really have a beef with me or whatever.

Anyway - just my .02.

If a review makes me laugh it gets an instant EU, but otherwise I try and pretend that I am a baffled consumer! I also try and pretend that I am very interested in the toy and ask myself what I would want to know before I shell out money (or points) for it.

An EU is something that answers all my questions and then some.

Useful answers the majority for my questions but either lacks in some detail or lacks in something.

Somewhat useful is a review that hardly covers anything at all about the product or anything about the product.

Worth reading but not useful is an review that is not useful, but is there. I do not vote anyone's review not useful at all because I think they are at least worth reading to leave a helpful comment to improve the reviewer.

One thing that you haven't got a checkbox for is ingredients.

In candles, and bath and body stuff, and massage oils, and lubes---I absolutely can't give something an EU vote unless they mention the ingredients. As someone who's allergic to several components of standard lubes, I really need to know the ingredients, and sometimes the product page has hit its character limit, or is incorrect. If you've got the bottle, you should write up the ingredients.

I'm kind of debating only giving U's to reviews that list the ingredients, and EU's to reviews that explain their function or at least mention the ones that can cause allergies, and anything without an ingredients list gets an SU or lower. But that might be too harsh, especially for someone's first or second review.

Nobody has checked "identity of the reviewer" yet---but I do a little bit. If it's someone's first or second review, I'll still explain in a comment that it might be good to add sizing info or cleaning info for their next review, but I'm not afraid to vote EU even if those things aren't included in a first review, because the review is often of a product they've had for several years, and those reviews ARE really useful to me.

I admit that sometimes the way other people have voted will influence my vote on a review, although lately I'm doing just as much of a disservice by not voting at all. I do read a fair amount of reviews, although I mostly just read and don't vote because I feel like everybody's expecting an EU and I'd rather give out no votes at all than hear more complaints about getting a Useful or lower.

To me, something that makes a review extremely useful is having all of my questions answered. If you don't tell me anything about your measurements, give me very detailed information on the sizing of the garment so I can compare it to stuff of my own. Let me know what ingredients are in something so I can at least research them myself if I feel so inclined. tell me why something did or didn't work for you. We may have very different tastes and I may love something you hate, or hate something you love. Pictures are always nice, but I hate that they've become somewhat of a standard. Not everybody can take pictures and not everybody wants to post pictures, so to judge a review for something that isn't a requirement just seems silly to me.
