The Big Brain Freeze
We talked about it last week—that antithetically magical moment of mystery, wonder and awe—when the little ones, supposedly long into sleep, awaken to the unfamiliar clang of headboard-banging and go tiptoeing into the hall to see what all the ruckus is about. And sometimes, just sometimes, those same little curious minds come traipsing into the bedroom in the middle of one of those grown-up carnal carnivals, and then hit you like a ton of bricks with The Question:
“What are you and Daddy DOING????”
This is the moment of decision—one of parenthood’s most dreaded pop quizzes/brain-freezes, when you have to decide whether to take the route of:
a. Least Resistance: make up some cute story involving tickling, fairy princesses, and a dash of Kung Fu Panda (“we’re acting out the scene where Po fights Tai Lung...”)
b. Advanced Calisthenics: wrestling or doing some doubles version of yoga (“daddy’s still practicing for his UFC title bout, honey...”)
c. Questions Ad Infinitum: give them the straight story; minus the gory details of bodily fluids and penetration of various orifices (“when mommies and daddies love each other very much, they have Special Mommy and Daddy Time, wherein Mommies like to _______ and Daddies really like to ___________...and why the hell aren’t you sleeping??”)
If you answered ‘a’, start saving your money—you’re going to need it for the kids’ therapy bills.
