What do you think about Blu-Ray?

Contributor: Gary Gary
I was just reading an article about Digital Playground releasing more titles on Blu-Ray, and boasting the largest selection in adult video. Is Blu-Ray really going to make everyone replace their DVD collection? Do you have Blu-Rays, and if so what do you think about them?

I have a few blu-ray discs. They're a huge step up from DVD quality. I don't have a big DVD collection, so I don't really need to do much replacing. I did replace my Torchwood DVDs with the Blu-ray versions, but I don't think I have much of anything else that I plan to replace.

I don't own any porn on Blu-ray yet, although I did rent one porn movie on Blu-ray. The quality improvement was great, but I don't have a Blu-ray player in my bedroom, and I don't usually want to watch porn in the living room, so I don't plan on buying any Blu-ray porn at the moment.

I love blu rays... but they arent for all flicks. I haven't seen a porno on one though.

I don't think they matter for comedies or dramas, but if it is a movie with special effects or computer animation, its definitely worth it!

Not a fan of Blu-Ray, but I am in love with Sony (who produces the technology), so it's a weird combination since everything I own can play Blu-Ray.

The boyfriend loves it all though. I haven't caved yet and bought a porn on Blu-Ray just for his amusement though.

I love blu-ray, but I find that it only matters for some movies. High action, science fiction, etc, look great. Dramas, doesn't really seem to matter so much. I have 2 porns on blu-ray at the moment - they're not bad, but honestly a bit too expensive right now.

Blu-Ray is definitely worth it in conjunction with an HDTV. It's especially cool for special effects packed movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and computer-animated films like the Pixar movies. They are pretty darn pricey, though, so it's more of a luxury than anything else.

Yeah, I understand that things always need to be moving forward, but sometimes it just seems like they invent new things that we don't really need to just to have something new to sell us. Star Wars on Blu-Ray makes sense, but not the Godfather... and porn... I think porn gets worse the higher quality the picture is. But that is just me

Blu-Ray (Blue ray, whatever) is really ONLY worthwhile with an HD tv (not just the receiver box). Because of (technical jargon), hooking a blue ray player to a standard def tv is like hooking up high speed internet to a commodore 64 computer (complete with audio cassette saving technology). I don't know how plasma tv's fare with HD; they really seemed to not catch on so much in the US.

As it stands now, I haven't heard of a BR player NOT playing DVD's. So, your collection is safe.

The prices are coming down too. For about $400 or so, you can get a smaller HDtv and a blue ray player.

Also, if anyone was paying attention in the HD-DVD vs. Blue Ray, Blue Ray won and all the HD-DVD's are going the way of BetaMax.

Everything is worth it in HD though.

We have an HDTV, and we love Blu-rays. We don't have many of them yet, but honestly, I'm just annoyed at having to replace my DVD collection. Lol.

I don't think you'd HAVE to replace your DVD's...upgrade maybe, but not replace.

We probably don't HAVE to, but I am finding that I prefer the high definition better. It's just a pain in the bum to me to have to get Blu-rays now to replace all the low def DVDs we have.

Blu Ray is just a high compression DVD with a special super fine laser to read it. Your "old" standard def DVD's will work with them. It isn't like trying to play a VHS on a DVD player.

However, the way technology is heading, the next level is to have hard drives where you download your movies to it. Kind of like i tunes has done with music for ipods. So Blu ray will also be out soon-ish

I haven't seen a porn or anything like that on Blu-Ray, but I did watch The Nightmare Before Christmas on Blu-Ray on a HD TV and I was just utterly astounded at the amount of detail that had been put into the movie, even way back when detail this great wasn't even really a thought. Like Zero's nose is actually a glowing pumpkin and not just a glowing bulb, lol

I've thought so too, thumb drives. I really think they're the next thing out now. I see them now as how CD's were in the mid-90's. There's a LOT of potential AND they are relatively cheap. The only competition I can see for the thumbs would be just watching it on your all-in-pod-device-pad thing (phone, music player, web surfing tool, computer, e-book reader, etc).

Keep your DVD's though...people are still looking for Atari's too!

We have a Blu-Ray player simply because we have a PS3. Partnered with a standard television there is a bit of a difference but it's when you add an HDTV to the equation that the gap widens dramatically. We have stopped purchasing DVDs for anything (other than porn because, like you said, it can be a bit... much...) and are replacing some of our favorite DVDs with Blu-Ray. Add in the amount of data a blu-ray disc can hold compared to a standard DVD and wow. The price has fallen considerably, at least in this area, on the players as well.

We too have a similar setup, and bought the PS3 to serve two purposes (gaming and blu-ray) and to save space. Blu-ray is just amazing, and many movies/discovery channel features take full advantage of it.

Porn, on the other hand, is where we draw the line. We don't feel we need HD shots of pornstars. After all, if we want to watch sex in HD, we should be looking at each other, and not the TV! (ha ha)

I think, "It's one more damn thing I have to REBUY once they phase out DVDs." No interest whatsoever in it.

It seems like they just keep coming up with more and more shit, so we have to replace our video or audio collections every decade or so.

No thanks. I hope they don't phase out DVDs.

Really, I don't want to look at details of the wrinkles on somebody's cock or pimples on somebody's ass. Some things are better left with LESS detail.

If you hook up BluRay to a standard tv you won't be able to notice anything different.

To really appreciate HD, you have to have both an HD TV and a BluRay player. Regular tube tv's just don't have the resolution to make HD a reality.

Most, if not all, BluRay players also play DVD's (CD's too), so that shouldn't be an issue at all.

High Definition audio/video discs that work best on an HD TV. You will see almost 0 results of BluRay on a regular tv.

They're basically really high quality DVD's.
