Are we talking first time we used something for bdsm purposs or the first item designed specifically for bdsm uses? In terms of using things for bdsm, I started using hair clips and clothespins on my nipples when I was in my early teens. The first legit piece of bdsm gear I purchased was a ball gag that I bought this year.

If you only count self bought then it would be bondage tape and a pinwheel. As a gift I got a stunning (handmade) latex collar with studs.

The very very very first piece would have been, I believe, a leather collar with a heart tag! I loved that collar. My wife and I are D/s, not switch - but both Domme and sub each other, so we're looking for a new collar set and I am so excited!
