Well my dear, this could be done with just glue. Then you would only have to drive a few screws in. It would take a bit more time and a few clamps though.
Last thing I tried to put together was a book shelf, The Man got so frustrated watching me that he said, oh just go away for a bit and I will call you when it's done.

What's the thinnest board you think would be safe to use for this type of project?
Depends on the size. If you just wanted to make a box for say a traditional vibe you could use 3/16". The problem comes with the hinges and clasp, anything thinner and the screws would not have much to grab onto. You could just make a lid that sits on the top though.

I can't tell you how glad I am to hear that! DIY is something everyone should at least try as it can save you lots of money. Plus a great deal of satisfaction can be had when you do things yourself!

Congradulations frezz1234! The correct answer is 600 feet: “The tallest wooden structure is the Trestle. It is the world’s largest structure composed entirely of wood and glue laminate. It is 600 feet tall (12 stories) and constructed of 6.5 million board feet of lumber.”
