What exercise do you do when you can't afford or go to a gym?

Contributor: UrNaughtyaAngel UrNaughtyaAngel
Hi all. A few years ago when I was seeing that I was gaining a lot of weight and not fitting into my clothes (no its worse that back then) I joined a all female gym. I really loved it especially the classes they offered. Though I have the time to do to a gym I can't afford it.

I am curious to know besides walking what other forms of at home exercise do you do?

I personally love aerobics workout videos that echo classes in the gym. I also do resistance workouts with weights and bands that are easy to do at home.

When I travel, I usually bring a resistance band that I can also attach to a door. Besides that, body weight exercises such as squats, lunges, and crunches are great.

I hate gyms and don't do well in classes because I get bored so easily. I told my fiance and he installed a pole for me (we did it ourselves with stuff from the hardware store - total cost $50.00 - it's well made and VERY secure). I go online to video sites where I can get lessons for free. It's great for building strength, flexibility and toning along with helping to feel confident and sexy.

I do a lot of Tai-Chi, and when you are serious about it and practice daily it is a really good workout, When I started I had muscles I didn't know I had aching

It's all about Tracy Anderson. She has great at home work outs. She keeps work outs fresh and her goal is all about getting you as lean as possible, think dancer body.

I like the "Primal" exercises over at Mark's Daily Apple (link). All designed to be done with little or no equipment in or around your house. Enjoy!

There are several websites that you can get free workouts from. Bring this question to the meeting next week. I want to talk about fitness.

I rent workout videos from netflix, that way I never get bored since I can just get a new video everytime I get bored with a video. If I find one I really like a lot I try and buy a copy of it, but renting it helps me figure out whether or not I will like it before I buy it.

I have a set of free weights I use at home I put on something blood pumping and use them, or I go for a walk instead of driving.

I aspire to be a runner. My progress has been slow-going. I'm hoping to make a purchase for some shoes soon, I bought new shoes over the summer but I've worn them out at the gym. I'm a supinator so I wear my shoes quickly, and these shoes are already starting to hurt. New shoes, and I'm going to start hitting the pavement, along with the gym. I have a goal for a 5K. I hoped to do it this spring, but maybe summer or next spring. I got off track over the winter.

I use my Wii Fit or I just try to sprint around the neighborhood for a good 20 - 30 mins. That's all I can do. I have mild asthma so I can't do too much.

I have an elliptical machine and regularly do my Yoga for Weight Loss and my Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth dvds. I bought both fairly cheaply through Gaiam. I can't afford a gym right now either.

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions.

I do want to when I get back to work and finances in order get the Wii Fit.

I do not have a dvd player but I could use my lap top, I keep forgetting about you tube going to check them out.

The thing about doing aerobics exercise at home is that in the past just my walking around my apt. downstairs neighbor has complained to the neighbor even said I had an exercise machine. I wish I had a treadmill or stationary bike. Next apt I get I will try to get it on the first floor but I know I can't let him control what I do in my apartment.

You could do push-ups, squats and sit-ups. this site has a schedule of workouts for those exercises. Between the three exercises you're targeting the major muscle groups.

The gym I use is part of my neighborhood association (no cost other than homeowner's assoc. dues) so I have no excuses.

Thanks for the website. I can't even do 1 real push-up. I do the girly ones. I have nerve damage in my right arm, so it's a lot weaker than my left.

I just got the Wii Fit, and I love it and hate it. I love the games and the workout. I hate the body test. I use it on the days I can't get to the gym.

I like videos for Tae bo that I can follow and do at home. Sometimes I buy them and sometimes I just watch them online.

We also have a set of stairs that go up the side of one of the mountains in town which is really good for exercising. Running up and down those a few times a day really starts to help you get in shape. I guess anywhere with a lot of stairs would work the same way.

We have the Wii Fit Plus and I have made an hour long workout that consists mostly of yoga and strength training exercises. Even the "running" you do in place, so there isn't much jumping around that would cause noise. The Wii Fit Plus allows you to go from one exercise to the next quickly, so you really can get your heart rate up.

We also have two Yoga workout videos that we do, one which focuses on Yoga for weight loss. We just tried the "Biggest Loser" Wii game and oh, boy! Jumping Jacks? Really? I don't know why, but I hate jumping jacks. Maybe it's because my boobs are so big that I can't find a good sports bra and I hate how they bob up and down when doing jumping jacks. Anyway, that shit was hard for some like me who's out of shape AND smokes, but we did try to start on "boot camp" mode. I think next time I will go through all the different routines they have and I'll keep you posted.

We want the connect, but we can't afford it yet. We have to do with our Wii for now. Our Xbox360 is on it's last legs I think, so we have to wait until we can afford to upgrade that system before we can try the Kinect. I would love not to have to fool with the balance board and remote!

I hate it when consoles die! I love the Kinect and being able to use it without a controller and things to fiddle with. Plus, being able to use the menus with your hands and voice just feels cool and futuristic.

Yeah, we bought our Xbox from a friend and it worked great for awhile. It's been overheating, even though we have extra fans installed. So we have to deal with the Wii for awhile.
