Delilah,

I believe you said this was the first anthology you edited. Tell us a little bit about it.

I'm assuming you're a writer. How do you like editing? Was it difficult to pick the stories?

We at NRBC love hearing ... more
I've written a ton of stories--shorts to novels. I came to writing short stories only in recent years, and mostly due to the Cleis editors' fun calls for submissions. I think I've been in two of Sacchi's so far--Lesbian Cowboys and Lesbian Cops. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to send a proposal of my own to Cleis. I was thrilled when they accepted the Girls Who Bite idea.

I do quite a lot of "editing"--through the online critique group I run, so it's not a huge difference in the work. However, chosing stories I thought would please an audience other than myself was HARD!!!!! I have peculiar tastes, sometimes, so I drafted a couple of friends and my daughter to read with me. I figured if they liked the stories I liked too, I'd be safe.

Mm-hm. This is actually my first time making stew--- (I was a vegetarian for a long time), but it's totally doable---you could do it too! And the English muffins are easier-than-pie!

Yeah. I would have a hard time picking stories that had broad appeal. I am rather esoteric in what I like. But it sounds like you did a good job.

I lilke how this is in so many different settings, rather than just Transylvania and the Olympic Coast.

The Sonoran desert, Rome, and the wax museum sound like really great locations for stories!

"Vampirate"! Great portmanteau! Although if she's female, wouldn't that be "vampiratess"?

I can burn boiling water.

Okay, maybe I'm not that bad, but I just don't care enough about food to cook it well. Though I do enjoy watching cooking shows on the Food Network. Gordon Ramsey is so much fun to watch.

The descriptions are Delilah's work, not mine. And here's what she writes about her own story:

About my story:?My story in Girls Who Bite, is about an ex-soldier, fresh from the Gulf. She’s still recovering from her physical and mental wounds and trying to get herself back in shape so that she can return to police work. In the meantime, she’s taken a job working security at a wax museum. Her fascination with one particular wax work, a vampire on the verge of being slain, takes a twist with the object of her fascination comes to life. That’s the gist of the story. I wrote mine after I’d read all the submissions and selected the stories I wanted. And even though I’ve written a ton of stories, I’ll admit I was intimidated. Their stories were all that good! So, I made myself look at what was there and figure out what wasn’t. I went for something lighter, laced it with humor and a bit of irony. Modern vampire lore is anchored in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, so I pulled a character right out of his story, gave her a new life beyond his pages, and hinted at a continued rivalry with a Van Helsing.

That's very cool! And a great idea on how you picked the stories. I'll have to check out some of your work.

Heh. We had to ban my mom from making tea on the stove when I was growing up... she ruined more pans than she could remember to count ... which is why I have a whistling kettle!

The little bit of humor is something that I appreciated in her story as well as a few others. This book managed to make me smile, and coming from an avid reader like me, it's a very good thing. I usually stay passive and read long.

I was sad when marketing nixed "Beastly Babes" as the title for the shapeshifting antho, but She-shifters has a certain ring to it--like She-ra! And I had some fantastic submissions for it! *wink*

I'm definitely going to add that book to my list. I also have the Red Velvet and Absinthe on my bed table, I'm halfway through and I love it. Paranormal is hot. It feeds some fantasies.

I used to fight light in the SCA. Haven't done it in years, but that's where I met the people who now joust. Though back then, they hadn't gotten startled with it yet. Now, they hold their own jousting competitions. The last tournament a friend of mine hosted was the largest competitive jousting tournament in North America in terms of the number of jousting competitors.

And it is a competition. Not just a demonstration. It's a lot of fun. If you are in the Austin, Tx area, you should check out Lysts on the Lake in May 2012.
