I can't start a discussion without clicking on a product and writing something from there, so all of my discussions say that they're in relation to some random product. How do I create a discussion without this problem?

When you're in the category for your discussion, say vibrators, scroll down to the bottom, and you should see Start A Discussion and a few other option buttons to choose from. Click on Start A Discussion, and you can then do so without tying it to a product.
