Hair removal and waxing, Duel Discussion & Poll

Contributor: Cherrylane Cherrylane
Okay so here's the story: I'd been shaving my bits probably since around when I started to get hair down there. Because I tend to like to be about as hairless as possible, I usually shave basically every day/every other day to keep the fuzz at bay. I REALLY hate being fuzzy.

After hearing all the drooling over getting waxed I finally decided to get one myself several weeks ago. Or well, probably more like two months ago. In all the raving over how smooth it gets you and how long it lasts, I'd never been told by anyone that you have to have hair a certain length (LONG... at least for me heh) to get waxed at all. I had to go without shaving for weeks before I could get it done, and I found it basically unbearable. After a week I had a hard time even touching myself because it just felt icky and unsexy to me.

Over all, I liked the results of the wax. It took over a week for hair to appear at all, and when it did it was less hair than is usually there and of the hair that came back, it was softer and lighter. However, I'm still unsure whether I think it's worth it for me to have to "grow it out" again. I mean, that hairless week was pretty awesome. But the two-three weeks of growth I had to get there? Not so much. My boyfriend also told me he doesn't think it's worth it, as he much prefers no/as minimal hair as possible, and is incredibly unenthused at the idea of having to go down on fuzz for several weeks when shaving gave what he believed were perfectly satisfactory results.

Have any of you all had this problem? If you wax, how do you feel about going back and forth from hairy to hairless every month or couple of months? If your partner removes hair for their nethers, how do they do it and how do you feel about the results?

And for the poll, what is your preferred method of hair removal down there?

I shave because I have no money, but laser hair removal would be spectacular!

I just got an epilator and it's the best thing ever! (It's basically a gazillion rotating tweezers.) I have a Remington that was like $30 at Walgreens.

This is the first method I've used where I can get almost everywhere without fear or regrowth from hell. (I did leave a tiny bit of trimmed fuzz on my labia as it was my first time with the epilator & I was a little nervous.) Regrowth is not bad at all. I could see dots where hairs were within a couple days, but couldn't actually feel them much with my hand for like a week because they weren't prickly. You do have to let the hair grow back slightly between uses to be totally effective, but not that much. Maybe a week or so tops. And it doesn't hurt anything to use it daily if you want. I believe it should have the same benefit as waxing as far as hair growing back thinner.

Only things I haven't tried to compare with is professional waxing & lasers. I'd love to try professional waxing sometime, but I think it would get too expensive & the regrowth would suck.

I use nair cream its pretty good. I leave it for about 5 to 7 mins then wipe it with a warm cloth. I also shave when I feel like it. Other then that its nair hair removal.

I'm not sure if it's due to the texture of my hair, but the Nair doesn't do a good job getting me all the way down to the skin. And I can't really use it on my actual girly bits - If I leave it long enough to work well it will burn me. Did that exactly once. Owww.

That. Sounds. Awesome!!!

How does it feel to use one (an epilator)? I can't imagine how it couldn't hurt if it's really pulling out hairs.

Waxing HURT (I got mine done professionally). It didn't make me cuss, but there were some pretty loud "AH"s and "OW"s. And I was like clutching my boobs each rip in an attempt to not jump up/flail in pain. In the end, that part was tolerable. The pain portion that bothered me most was how sore and sensitive I was for about 12 hours later. It felt fine getting into my car, but by the time I'd gotten back to my apartment, I was basically waddling lol

Epilating is way too painful for me down there.
Shaving makes me itchy, and my hubby too, so we both just do really close trims.
I have a brazillian appointment I'm going to use a week before my due date so that I don't have hair to deal with down there in addition to all the other post-pregnancy stuff.
One day, I hope to be able to afford laser hair "reduction" (removal is false advertising).

Obviously depends on your pain tolerance & individual nerves & such, but I don't find it bad at all. I haven't had a professional wax, so I can't say for sure, but I've tried waxing myself & the hair growing in different directions screws me up. With the epilator that doesn't matter, so I'd guess it's less painful than waxing because it's not pulling many different directions at once. And there's definitely not any residual pain after a few minutes.

If you try it just make sure to trim a bit first, as with long hair it will hurt and can try to suck you in. (It automatically stops if that starts to happen though. I promise. I had that happen & was just sitting there staring at the thing attached to my labia going... something seems wrong, but it wasn't hurting so it took a second to catch on. LoL.) The directions should explain all this stuff pretty clearly.

Well, I guess I'm the first guy to chime in...hope no one minds. I was just contemplating a poll and figured that someone already had started one

I tried razor, but too much razor burn and/or ingrown issues post-shave. I'm pretty happy with Nair Shower Power, but can't use it on my jewels. The skin is way too sensitive apparently, so it's razor there.

FWIW, MrsLFF usually shaves and was doing the Tria laser for quite awhile. She definitely noticed a thinning of hair that would come back. I didn't have the patience to use it regularly.

Both of us use a combination on trimming with clippers and Depilatory Creams. We've both waxed and really doesn't seem worth it when we can basically get to where we want to be with the said methods.

I shave due to the cost of laser and my low pain tolerance for waxing.

I shave. I'd use nair or something if I had it, because I seriously hate shaving, but whatever.
I'd seriously consider the whole laser hair removal thing for my legs though. And the little peach fuzz I get on my face. I hate it so much. But I've heard it's super expensive.
I'd never wax though. It would hurt wayyyy too much.

I shave. Having some fuzz doesn't irritate me or my husband. I'll shave once or twice a week if I feel like it, or go a few weeks without if I don't.

I can't do the waxing bullshit, the fuzz does irritate me but I go insane thinking about how much shaving irritates my skin, waxing would send it into a frenzy. Au natural is no bueno for me either, as it can get hectic and out of control for most women. I think a lot of feminists push that "society" makes us feel as if a bush is unacceptable or unfeministic, but that's not true. I think women shave if they want to shave or want to please their partners, but wanting to please a partner isn't confined to just shaving. We strive to do that with everything, so I honestly feel if I want to shave, I'll shave. My partner prefers me shaved, but when I don't feel like it, she knows better than to complain because I see it as being my body and I'll maintain it the way I feel like or see fit. Waxing seems like too much hassle and I feel like it's more of a, "I'm doing it for someone else" method, unless you're just wanting the long lasting results. I'd rather spare the pain and just shave/trim it when I feel like it.

I did the laser hair removal for 6 sessions, which is the minimum recommended length. I think I'm going to need 6 more, which I'm saving up for. Its not cheap, but its worth it. I also did my underarm at the same time, which has been wonderful!

I used to get Brazilian waxes and they were quite nice; my partner didn't mind the couple of weeks of (thinner and softer) hair, although he always said he likes me as I am and that I don't need to get waxed at all.

I got an epilator a few months ago and found it too painful for me to get used to. Mind you, I'm a tweezer addict. I could sit for three hours plucking out hairs individually from basically any body part that I can reach! The one-by-one feeling of tweezing is fine, but the rapid-fire pain of epilating is too much for me right now. Waxing is okay, strangely enough, because the pain goes away quickly.

Spectacular doesn't seem the right word. Laser HURTS, and the entire area needs to be done at least five times (usually about ten times, sometimes as much as fifteen times).

Shaving is quick and easy for me. Using Nair down there doesn't sound like the best idea to me. I've heard some horror stories. lol

I have tried shaving, waxing, and the hair removal creams. The hair removal creams are a joke...even the professional Gigi brand. Shaving just makes the hair grow back thicker, quicker, and darker, which makes hair removal even more of a hassel. I tried using Nair's wax because that is what my beautician said to use. However, that was not the most pleasant experience in my life. Nair took off my skin and left the hair. My fiancee and I only use Gigi's cream and all purpose soft waxes. We tried using the stripless waxes, and that was almost as horrible of a product as Nair. So if you ever want to try a wax, go ONLY with Gigi.

I shave because I have no money.

If you have the money, I'd think about getting laser hair removal.

You're actually supposed to shave as close to the skin as you can get before treatment and the hair beneath the skin just falls out.

so you can have the complete removal of the follicle AND keep shaved between treatments if you do experience regrowth.
