I never send food back in a restaurant, do you?

Contributor: Bignuf Bignuf
Yesterday we were out for a very expensive Italian dinner and the pasta dish I got was downright cold in the middle. For a $26 pasta entre, I was not going to just "eat it, or leave it" and say nothing. I called over the waiter, and sent it back. I ended up with the chef coming out, apologizing and getting a free dessert (which was not my intent).

Have you ever sent food back? Why? What happened?

If something is WRONG--yes.

If I thought I would like it and didn't. No.

My mum got a salad once where some of the lettuce was slimy and gross. Since the salad was her main course (it wasn't a side salad where she could just eat something else) and she's already a majorly picky eater, I asked the waiter to take it back to the kitchen.

One time I ordered a calzone with artichokes and they gave me one with... anchovies. I had to send that back. By the time they made me a new one everyone was done eating. I wasn't mad, just asked for a cannoli and we could be even. The waiter came back so sad to tell me they had cannoli shells but no filling. I got pretty bummed but they gave me tiramisu and cheesecake for free. I was happy again

I have only sent food back a few times. Once when it was not what I ordered. Once when the food was still frozen.

Only if I was given the wrong thing. I don't like to complain.

It really depends. I once decided not to send back something that wasn't what I ordered and ended up loving it. I will let them know if it is cold or under cooked though.

Depends. If the food is cold or otherwise downright unappetizing, then yes.

I usually don't unless they bring me the wrong dish. I'm always worried if I send something back someone will spit in my food.

Depends. It's very rare...but if somethings really off (like bleeding steak or still frozen meat) or covered in some crappy sauce I asked to not be on it, I will return it politely.

Having been a waiter, I know restaurants don't mind you sending stuff back if they made a mistake and/or you do it politely w/respect. It gives the server/restarant a chance to make good and satisfy a customer. It's only when someone is a real asshole, you should worry about something bad happening.

I eat out a lot and have never had anything wrong with my food. If something was ever *wrong* I would say something for sure.

My husband on the other hand, well - his order almost always seems to arrive wrong. He is a very picky eater though. And yes, he sends it back each and every time it is wrong.

I haven't yet. But I would if I had like, a dead bug in it.

I'm saying "other?" because I seem to have things happen frequently but not all the time to my food. Though I *am* picky, it's generally something like a burger being pink (which they aren't supposed to do unless you request it) or something on a meal when I asked without. If I don't like food, I tried it at my loss but I do expect what I ordered to be what I asked for and properly cooked. So, yes, of course I'll send food back.

I will send it back if the dish wasn't thoroughly cooked (excluding steaks, steak tartare, and sashimi), or if there's a foreign object in it.

I have only done it once.

I don't send it back to be "fixed". But if there is something wrong with it I will say something to the restaurant manager. If it is a small problem, I will go ahead and eat it. If it is just inedible, I will ask to not be charged, or ask for a different dish or both. Most times I will just not eat and expect to not be charged. I really don't trust sending food back to be fixed by someone who might be angry about it or be crazy enough to do something nasty to it.

I tend to have the worst luck eating out. Occasions I have sent the food back include wrong order, hair in food, undercooked chicken (Eh...I'll pass on the salmonella). Found MOLD on a hamburger bun.
So it seems like a lot.. but I can't look past those things!
Now, I just steer clear of a lot of establishments... due to experience or word of mouth of ex employees.

I didn't know it was possible to do that! But BlackOrchid really have the worst luck to share...

I won't send food back for fear the chef/cook/server will do something to it like spit on it.

I really don't like eating out at all. Invariably I'll be either disappointed with the meal or I'll get heartburn, nausea etc. Plus it's a waste of money but my wife would argue otherwise.

I have a few times, I found stuff in my food before and I send steaks back if they are not done right.

I typically don't unless there's a major problem like a steak that's overcooked.
