Mr.Bignuf here. For me, no question, it was the U.S. Navy Scuba Diving GI Joe (the real 12 inch one), when I was about nine years old.....and it was a HUGE expense, I realize NOW, on what my dad used to earn. Amazing how my parents managed to pull those sorts of things off.
Mrs. Bignuf here. It was a Betsy Wetsy Doll. She ate, drank and wet her diaper. I knew some other girls with that doll and thought it was SO amazing, but NEVER expected to get one. My dad and mom had very limited funds too and we had a family of eight, so I NEVER expected that to happen, but apparently (I too learned this YEARS later), my AUNTIE went in with my married older cousin and bought the doll for Santa to leave)!!!!
I played with that doll from about 6 years old till I was probably 11 (I did not "play" with it then, but it was my COLLECTIBLE). She continued to live on my dresser, in nice cloths, till I was DONE WITH GRAD SCHOOL and still adorns the dresser in my parents home, in their "guest bedroom" that used to be my room. Some day I will reclaim her and she once again may live on MY dresser!!!! I would have gotten her earlier for my own daughter (now in medical school...so a bit late on that), but MY daughter NEVER, EVER wanted to play with dolls....despite being a "girlie girl". She enjoyed her own dress up, make up...etc., but never dolls. She was more into LEGO's, and, of course, computer games (which did not exist when I was a child in the 60's)!!!!
