What kind of decorations are on your tree?

Contributor: bzzingbee bzzingbee
I just finished getting my (fake) tree up and decorated last night and am enjoying the lights on it now. While looking at it though, I realize that my decorations my be considered somewhat 'unconventional'. So I'm curious, what do you put on YOUR tree?

My tree has blue and white lights that are kind of 'etched' (though plastic) to give them a prism look. I have a white angel on top and then various ornaments. The 'unconventional' ornaments would be the ones my sister made me one year for Christmas. They are fake flowers mostly in dark red colors that have felt glued to the back with a slit for a hanging hook. There are roses, daisies, sunflowers, and some others I'm not sure of. There are also some yellow and red tinged sunflowers and straight yellow sunflowers. They actually look really pretty mixed in with the lights and other ornaments, even though they may sound odd. I also have a glass bead ornament that is strung with bead made by my sister's boyfriend who is a glass blower.

I don't actually have a tree this year, but the years when I do I only like white lights. Just a personal thing. And almost all glass ornaments. And when I have the time to do the stringing, I still do popcorn and cranberry strands.

What, if you don't mind my asking, is angel hair? The only thing I know of that goes by that name is pasta...

Angel hair is this god awful (in my opinion, lol) white stringy stuff that you put over your tree after you have it all decorated. It blurs the light in a pretty way and I guess could lend the image of snow too. I always found it itchy and hated putting it on trees, but my parents always used to make us do it.

Here's what it looks like in the package Angel Hair

We don't have a tree; and we're not gonna

I have seen a pre-lit little black one at walmart that I'd love, but whenever I go to get it it's always out of stock *pout*

Multi colored lights, purple tinsel, a purple Santa on top and all of our ornaments have been made by hand. Most of them where made by my grandma but a few are made by a lady in Colorado, those are the ones we bought for the kids first through fifth Christmas. We also have a few made by the kids at school.

The "special" ornaments on our tree include hand made ornaments, ornaments that symbolize something for different people (i.e a santa cop, dogs, disney), and other ornaments that we have put on our tree for years.

Though everything else has changed with our tree decorations every year (real and fake trees, tinsel and garland, star and angel topper, colored, white, and flashing lights, etc.), the only thing that's consistent is using old ornaments. They're collected from 25+ years of gifts, travels, and stuff my brother and I created as kids. None of the boring, standard christmas balls on our tree. It may not look as perfect as the trees in shopping windows or magazines, but it's special to us.

My Christmas tree has purple and blue lights, bulbs, and beads, with silver tinsel. It has a turquoise topper that looks like it belongs in Whoville (How the Grinch Stole Christmas).

Since I can't put up my tree while I am living with my parents, I just voted for their tree. They have all multi-colored lights and strands of little presents instead of beads. We have a lot of weird ornaments and a few that we've had since I was a baby. Every pet we have ever had has an ornament that vaguely resembles them and there are ornaments for everyone's favorite things. Like, I have ornaments of cats, frogs, cappuccino, a cupcake, and I think a peacock. Most of our ornaments are hand-blown ones from a Christmas store near our house.

The special ornaments are my mom's collection of expensive Waterford shapes etc. Even our pickle is Waterford. I don't understand the point of spending so much on them, but she loves them. They are a must for our family tree.

We also have a home made ornament tree. We get two trees every year.

I have a collection of gorgeous high-end crystal ornaments that I am, unfortunately, having to sell on e-Bay to pay bills (this is a tough year for us). I had collected the annual Swarovski crystal stars and the annual crystal angels. I also have several of Swarovski's novelty Christmas ornaments, like a crystal Santa (with platinum touches), a clip-on crystal bird, and several others that are just not coming to mind at the moment that I'll be selling. I am also selling my beautiful Swarovski tree topper (a large crystal star).

So, that is why I listed both an angel and a star as my topper! I have a pretty angel dressed in white that I bought either at Wal-mart or Target years ago and I will be using that to top our tree this year.

I also have the Waterford annual crystal snowflakes and annual stars, amongst many other Waterford crystal shapes. Those are going up for auction on e-Bay, too. I do have a few crystal ornaments here and there from other high-end crystal makers, but Swarovski and Waterford were the main brands that I collected.

Oh, and I have several of Smith & Hawken's gorgeous crystal garlands, plus some beautiful hand-blown glass icicles and hand-blown clear ornaments.

I prefer a tree with white lights and clear ornaments because I LOVE the frosty winter look. It is ravishingly elegant. My tree was a real show-stopper and looked like something out of a fairy-tale.

But, ya know, I can recreate a similar (though less dazzling) look with much cheaper clear glass ornaments.

Those must be very pretty! I am so sorry you have to sell them . I had a month this year where I didn't want to cash any bonds since they are not yet mature to their fullest value and I sold some beloved charms. It helped tie up lose ends and in the end I was glad I parted with them. I hope you can get them back later on!

We currently just have a small tree on our table, but with white lights, angel, moving train ornament that is over 20 years old, another train ornament, and a photo of my wife and myself. Also small traditional globe ornaments.

Small living space = small tree. It is a little 3 foot guy that sits on a small table.

I have multi colored lights and a whole whack of school made ornaments my daughter made over the years, a few special ones that were given to her, some winnie the pooh ones I bought for her when she was born and a few other hand made ones that were gifts over the years. I also have a few that were my grandmothers that I put on there.

and we have a home made star at the top

I don't do tinsel because it is really dangerous for pets if they eat it.

Nope, I have no plans on getting them back. They are collector's items and, as such, increase in cost and value as the years pass. I can't justify spending that much on an ornament at a later date just to rebuild my collection. Most of them are worth more than the retail price they cost the year they were released and I had managed to purchase most of them at a slight discount.

At first, I was EXTREMELY heartbroken to have to sell them, but it is so important to be able to prioritize. We ALL have to do what we have to do during hard times to be more practical. I have since toughened up my attitude about them. My solution was not to dwell on how much I loved pulling them out each year, decorating my tree, and basking in the dazzling glow of their beauty.

Our tree was so drop-dead gorgeous that people would stop in their tracks when they came up the stairs to our living room and first saw it. We ALWAYS got awed exclamations. My husband even loved our decorated tree and dubbed it "The Glory Tree." It seemed as though you could hear angels singing when you just sat and gazed at it, LOL!

I usually change the theme or color of our tree decorations each year. Last year was burgundy with a wood angel on the top the year before was white with snowflakes decorating the tree and a white and silver angel. This year the kids want multi colors and we may put up a multi colored star. We have singing lights too which are always cool.

One thing in huge supply at my house is Christmas Tree decorations. We buy one new ornament each year for everyone in the house so they really add up. They are usually a reflection of what is happening in our lives at the time. We have baseball, ballet, race cars, stuffed animals, photography mice and lil plumber reindeer. Lots that the kids made. We have a bit of everything. I have a ton of glass bulbs too but haven't used them in years because I was always nervous to have them around the kids.

@ Selective - We don't have the expensive ones for the tree but anything you put love into making and sharing can be a 'glory tree' so don't feel like you've lost that.

We have a string of blue LED lights that always goes on the tree, and then we add a string of either bright white or off-white lights - whichever of the white doesn't make it onto the tree goes around the front of the bookcase instead. We also normally put on silver tinsel, some ornaments from my husband's childhood, two little snowmen decorations with our names on them, and a set of silver, gold and bronze baubles in three different sizes that I got from a grocery store when we moved into our house and could get a 'proper' tree rather than the table-top tree we'd had previously.

We don't have a tree topper. I haven't yet seen one I've liked enough to buy, and this year we don't have the money to buy extra decorations.

I'm not sure which tree we'll be putting up this year, the small or the large... the place the large tree usually lives has been taken over by an extra bookcase, so either we need to move furniture or sacrifice the dining table.

We haven't put up a tree yet, we're getting it this weekend. However, we typically decorate it with white lights and a mish mash of ornaments from handmade to Happy Meal ones. We have so many that we can't actually ever use them all, so my wife tries to pick a theme for the tree each year which dictates what ornaments we use.

We've been lazy and haven't put our tree up yet but usually it's decorated with multi colored lights and a very eclectic collection of ornaments. My mom has been collecting christmas tree ornaments since the 50's so our tree is a big mix and match haha

I love those trees that are all coordinated, but then there's no place to put the kids' stuff that they worked so hard on, so our tree is a traditional mish-mash, and it's perfect!

We have a fraser fir this year and it smells devine!

This year I have white lights like always and blue, silver, and white glass ornaments up with blue and silver bows. I also have my metal ornaments that I put on every year and some tinsel. Oh yeah and my sliver and white tree skirt. I like to have a matching tree so I own quite a lot of decorations for this purpose. Next year will probably be gold and red.

Our fake tree has white lights, clear plastic angels, red bows, and decorations our children made in school 30 years ago!! I guess some things never will change. Since it is almost Valentines day, the lights will be changed to red, and if we still have it up at Easter, as we did one year, my wife will probably change the lights to pastel, get rid of the bows and hang plastic eggs in their place.
