Let's talk about YEAST infections.

Being a very sexual community, I'm curious as to what people actually believe causes yeast infections. As a teenager, I remember having a GYN exam and being told that I had one. First experience- and completely clueless. As an adult, I remember playing with candy sticks once (back when I didn't know better!) with no consequences. The worst infection I've ever had, was after surgery. That one was so bad that my husband got it and I required antibiotics.

In between, I've generally been pretty lucky. Any yeast infections have been minor and inconsequential. I have sometimes wondered if minor irritations were from a partner or a particular toy though. (Or even a true yeast infection.)

I'd love to hear what a sexual activity community think!

I'm genetically prone to yeast infections and have a very sensitive vulva, though I've never actually gotten one. In my experience, friends and family members have gotten yeastie beasties when the good bacteria in their vagina were killed or went haywire.

I assume we're talking vaginal yeast infections. The only yeast infection I ever had was when I was on hardcore antibiotics for a kidney infection. It was hell.

Antibiotics, sadly, are one of the leading causes of yeast infections in women. But, when you need them, you don't really have many options.

Oh yeah. I've been there. You start feeling better, only to feel immediately worse when you get another kind of infection...

I've only had one, and I didn't even feel any symptoms. They just told me when I got a pap that I had it, so I treated myself...

what I have had is one really bad case of a bladder infection (UTI). It was hell.

I've had probably around five yeast infections. I'm on birth control pills, so I figure that's mostly it. I try to be careful with the lubes and things I use, but I'm just prone to yeast infections.

I also had a bladder infection about three weeks ago. And yeah, they are hell. I even took medication my doctor prescribed me to get rid of the UTI, and that didn't work. I had to do another round of another medication to get rid of it. Bleh. Then I got another yeast infection, and Monistat stuff didn't work for it, so now I have to go back to the doctor tomorrow to see if he can give me something for it. Sigh.

I've been on a number of different antibiotics in my life, and rarely do they give me yeast infections. Lucky there- but the one that did hit me was pretty bad. Bladder infections are really painful- had friends that have had them. My sympathies.

I was on birth control pills for many years and never once had a yeast infection during that time, so I'm not sure of that connection myself though.

Yeah, I totally understand! When I had an emergency c-section for my two year old they had to put me on IV antibiotics because of a really bad infection. The yeast infection I contracted afterwards was hell!

Yeah, I've never heard of BC pills causing yeast infections, although I know antibiotics are notorious for destroying the good bacteria in the vagina.

Things that can cause yeast infections: antibiotics, chemotherapy, long term steroid use, diabetes, pregnancy, & birth control.
Switching birth control can sometimes help.

& Anyone with a bladder UTI- please make sure to follow through on your treatment. I was an idiot and didn't- thus how I got the kidney infection (which is still considered a UTI).

I'm with you OneSexyWifey - BC has made me more prone to yeast infections where previously I never had a problem. Everything that could go up there did! But now I tend to be careful with what lube I use because that adds to the possibility. I try and avoid glycerine as much as possible.

Oh and I know the pain of having a UTI - getting the meds and having that go away only to have a damn yeast infection because of the antibiotics. Sheesh!

Bah to both of the evil things that put a dampener on my sex life.

When I was living in the States, work didn't cover medical insurance and I couldn't very well afford it on my own. I would get UTI regularly, once every three months - it was like clockwork. No matter how clean I kept myself or my toys. I lived with that for about eight years, not knowing it could be any different. I took cranberry supplements hoping to cleans my system, but it didn't matter, I'd still get another UTI.

I moved to Canada in the last year and have finally been able to see and afford a proper doctor who, 1. didn't just treat the symptoms of my UTI, but finally gave me information I could use as to why it had been going on for so long. What she diagnosed was that I had been living with a low-level yeast infection, probably since puberty and every three months it gets bad enough to flair up and cause the UTIs.

Now, all I do it take acidophilius around my cycle and have Tzatziki (probiotic yogurt) sauce for a meal once or twice a month and 1. no more low level yeast infection 2. no more UTIs and 3. no more cranberries! (LOATHE cranberries)

Thank goodness I've been extremely lucky enough to not experience a yeast infection as of yet. My sister gets one every time she is on antibiotics of any kind, and honestly it doesn't sound like much fun. I've been on some heavy antibiotics from a bad infection after my first c-section, but didn't experience anything even then. I hadn't heard about birth control effecting it, but I guess it makes sense and it's good to know.

I think hearing that a low level yeast infection can lead to UTI is very useful! Wow. Yeah the cranberries aren't great.

Does anyone think that slightly unclean toys or partners can lead to yeast infections? I remember from sex ed that the vagina is designed to essentially be self- cleaning and accomodate things like a man's cock which way back in history wasn't always the cleanest thing around either! (I'm not talking about medically unclean- just sweaty/dirty unclean...)

Cranberries- You have to intake at a certain level for a minimum of three weeks to see any positive effects. They have supplements available.

In my experience (not just myself, but other partners), if toys aren't clean, then you begin to introduce bacteria that has been sitting around since your last use. Bullets were the main offenders for me and UTIs. As for vaginal use toys - especially if say you already had a yeast infection, it clears up, but then you use a toy that you haven't cleaned since, and you reintroduce the bacteria. Personally I always give my toys a clean after I use them - store them in separators (one of those slipper hangs for closets) - and when I go to use them again, I give them a quick wash again (you know, because sometimes dust settles or whatever). I say - keep it clean! Then you can be as kinky as you like

I'm not really sure on this one but, I would say that slightly unclean toys or partners might lead to a bacterial infection rather than a yeast infection. Totally different infection. With a vag being all dark, moist and warm...perfect conditions for bacteria to thrive. Sometimes the only symptoms are a really strong fishy smell....

I'm surprised to hear people saying that BC pills can lead to yeast infections. I've used BC pills for 20 years on and off and haven't noticed this. From my experience, I used to get yeast infections periodically in my twenties. My mother told me that that's how she knew I was sexually active. From her experience as a nurse, she observed that virgins don't get yeast infections. Not that its not possible. Its just much less common. Since I've been married and monogamous, I stopped having a problem with them at all until menopause. Now that I'm making an extra effort to make sure I'm sexually active, ('Use it or lose it' my gynecologist told me) I'm again not having a problem with them. But two years into menopause, during a time when I was noticeably drier, I had a problem with repeated and difficult to combat infections.

Just my experience.

That's interesting. I never knew that menopause might be an issue for yeast infections. Thanks for sharing!

This is turning out to be a very interesting thread.

It should also be noted that you can have a yeast infection without ANY of the traditionally discussed itching, burning or redness. Every time I have ever gotten one the ONLY symptom I had was a very, VERY slight change in normal discharge. No smell or anything. I have gotten them from pregnancy, antibiotics and just hormonal influxes.

I am fortunate in that I don't suffer, but I have to be VERY careful to monitor ANY changes with my body because, sure enough, I don't watch it and I get to have a female partner tell me I taste funny. That's always great fun....

I'd never had a yeast infection until this past fall, even though I'm also genetically prone to them and on BC.

Then came bronchitis. 3 severe bouts in 6 months. They had to keep switching and strengthening the antibiotics to knock them out, and I ended up with a yeast infection every time, yogurt or no yogurt. We joked that the antibiotics were so strong they scared the bacteria out of my bowl and onto the floor.

My mom never did either, until she got pregnant.

The one and only one I ever had was after I tried lube for the first time. it was KY warming. Scared me so bad that I'm paranoid of all lubes now (but I'm an unusually moist girl so we haven't really ever needed it.)

I've had a UTI lead to a yeast infection, too, so I think they are related closely enough that one can trigger the other. It's all in a similar area, anyhow, even though one is bacteria and one is fungus.

A fungus can thrive in a dark, moist environment, just like bacteria. I had trouble with yeast infections because I'd get off before falling asleep and wouldn't wash up afterward (i.e. zonk off while still happily moist). I recommend staying dry at all times, which should help ward off both yeasts colonies and bacteria from overpopulating. Yogurt with active cultures is supposedly good for warding off yeast infections because it keeps healthy cultures around and doesn't let candida flare up out of control. For UTIs, cranberries, blueberries, and other high acidity fruits can be helpful as a preventative. You can change the pH of the urine in your bladder enough that it's harder for bacteria to grow/multiply before you pee it all out. Also, water. That's always good stuff.

I am not in biology or health but I did a research paper on the effects cranberries have on UTI's and the data are very inconclusive actually bcs there are many studies that give many different forms of cranberries (the fruit, a supplement or juice) in varying quantities.

In general what we find is that there is an enzyme in the cranberry juice that hinders the attachment of the bacteria (E.Coli) to the urethral opening. So drinking cranberry juice can be done as a preventive measure but it won't heal the UTI it just helps to stop the bacteria from sticking in there as much

In terms of yeast infections I had quite a few more than 4 years ago. It was hell. The reason why the pill causes this is bcs it creates a ph imbalance and promotes overgrowth. Also someone can have recurring infections bcs the bacteria can stay near the glans on the penis for a long time, like weeks even of the partner cleans himself adequately. So using a condom is a good idea.

As for UTI's I used to have one every month for a year it was horrible. The worst thing is that when it comes to cleanliness of my privates I couldn't be anymore of a neat freak. Enough so that the rule is no sex unless I just showered(and my partners hands needed to be washed and his privates needed to be as clean as mine)! So it wasn't bcs I was not clean. UTI's are hell bcs you have to wait at the clinic to get a freakin' prescription but when you have a yeast infection you can just get vagisil or something.

Taking tablets of pre and probiotics such as acidophilus with bifidus and lactobacillus replenishes the body;s normal flora and helps it fight infections. This means less yeast infections, colds, and flatulence. They are inexpensive and usually under refridgeration in natural food stores.

I've been on birth control pills for over 12 years and never had a yeast infection or a UTI. I've thought I had a yeast infection several times due to a slight change in the odor or consistency of discharge or natural lubrication, but my gyn has always assured me that I didn't have an infection, and I trust that she would know. However, I happen to love cranberries in all their forms - like juice, jams, and sorbets (the new Haagen Dazs cranberry blueberry sorbet is great, I could eat it all day!), and I eat at least one yogurt a day, so maybe long term yogurt and cranberry love has protected me somewhat. Unfortunately the amount of actual cranberry in the Haagen Dazs is probably relatively low, but it would be nice if you could get a prescription for Haagen Dazs instead of pills.

I used to get yeast infections every single time I had to take an antibiotic, which were generally for ear infections. Finally, I had a doctor tell me that I should never take an antibiotic without also taking a Probiotic supplement. Turns out he was right, and antibiotics don't cause them anymore if I do that. One thing to remember if you try that though-- you have to take the Probiotic about 2 hours before or after the antibiotic, or they will cancel each other out.

I've only had one UTI in my entire life, which happened to be last month, and I'm *still* trying to figure out how I got it! Alan & I are both "clean freaks" when it comes to sex and toys, and I've always done all the things that are supposed to prevent them, so I guess these things just happen sometimes.

Ugh, I went through this horrible cycle for a month where I'd have a UTI so the doctor would give me antibiotics, then they'd give me a Yeast Infection, then I'd have another UTI, another round of antibiotics. Especially crappy when you factor in mother nature's monthly gift, and to this day, I still couldn't stomach another yogurt. I'm prone to UTI's, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the most miserable experience ever. I've learned to love all things cranberry. lol
