Have you seen Beyond Scared Straight?

Contributor: Falsepast Falsepast
It's a show where they take kids on the verge of going to jail, and show them what jail is really like.

I don't find it that effective but it's interesting.

I watched it last night. There was a female prisoner yelling at this boys face, angry because she wanted that kid to have a chance at life. She said her son got shot in the head because he was getting into gangs/drugs and that he reminded her so much of her son. She was crying and begging him to change his ways. She told him to be strong for his mom because she's the only one he's got and to remember that if he was in jail his mom would be on her own ect. The boy broke down and cried and it was really emotional. I think (hopefully) that it changed his mind about things. I think it might be effective for some kids but other kids seem like a lost cause. The really bad ones that laugh at adults and have no respect at all are just... I don't think they can be helped! They're so bad! But you never know, people can change if they really want to.

I hope it will be effective for some kids!

I have seen it and this is about the ONLY reality show I can sit an watch. I have seen the one where a daughter went through the program at the same facility her mom was already incarcerated at. Some of those kids don't care no matter what they see or hear on the inside of that place. I have even seen them be taken into the dark showers an told they would be jumped, beat and taken advantage of an some of them kids just laugh. I say if parents were so scared to spank them kids wouldn't be this way!! Just my opinions of course but also it helps if the parent is in the child's life.

I love that show. I think it's a great way to give kids that need it, a reality check.

I did see it for the first time yesterday. There have been a lot of shows like this one. One they they don't do; follow the kids for years to see if they re-offend, if they graduate High School, if they get jobs or go to college. They usually just follow them for a few weeks and that isn't long enough to know if the program works.

I have no idea if these programs work in real life or not.

I've seen it a couple of times. I have worked in a jail setting, and it is very accurate how things work in there. If it deters only a few, it's an effective program.
