Are you a DirecTV customer? [IMPORTANT NEWS]

Contributor: xOhxSoxScandalousx xOhxSoxScandalousx
DirecTV is currently trying to make a deal with Viacom about how much of our bill is fair to pay for their networks. They want us to pay 30% more for channels. They will make an extra billion dollars a year for channels we already receive! Viacom wants you to pay more for 26 channels or you get none at all.

Read more about this here:

Here's a statement from Viacom:

As of midnight on Tuesday, July 10, DirecTV will drop 26 Viacom channels, including Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET, VH1, CMT, Spike TV, TV Land and more. Viacom is the most watched programmer on DirecTV. Nickelodeon is the most watched cable network on DirecTV. We regret that DirecTV refuses to consider a fair deal that recognizes the value of Viacom programming. We urge DirecTV customers to call 800-531-5000 or visit link and demand that DirecTV put its customers first, and keep Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central, BET and all of Viacom’s channels.

This is seriously bullshit! I watch a lot of these channels. My daughter watches Nickelodeon. This violates contract! Anyone else hear of this news? Any thoughts?

Scare tactics. Nothing is going away. This is just a way for them to figure out how their customers will react to a price increase before they slam it down their throats.

Viacom is hurting for money. Some of you may know this already: Viacom owns Blockbuster Video...and well, Netflix is kicking their asses right now.

They WILL drop the channels from service. I experienced it as a former Time Warner customer (luckily for channels I didn't care about), and Cablevision lost Fox Entertainment channels (incuding FoxSports) during a World Series (I think that blackout lasted two weeks).

Viacom's statement is self-serving. They're trying to get DirecTV customers to do their dirty work. What they're neglecting to tell DirecTV customers is that the price of their contracts will go up as a result. If not immediately, then definitely at the time of renewal.

It's business. Sorry, but I don't jump on these particular bandwagons. If DirecTV chooses not to honor Viacom's demands, Viacom will lose a significant portion of their viewers and the decision will likely be reversed.

If this actually goes through, doesn't it violate contract? Thus I can end my 2-year contract with them if I wanted to?

DirecTV isn't that bad to me. Other than not having ON DEMAND unless you pay and occasionally going out of service when the weather is bad, I actually liked it. I would much prefer Comcast though if it wasn't so expensive. :/ *meh*

I agree about not joining the bandwagon. I don't see why a home customer should have to campaign on behalf of a multi-millionaire dollar company to keep channels THAT HAVE COMMERCIALS. It's ridiculous. I'm just pointing out that companies are not above pulling their channels from the cable/satellite providers.

Exactly. I want to know exactly why it is that I'm paying for satellite TV and still have to deal with commercials. But, maybe I'm spoiled because we have Satellite radio and not very many commercials.

I can honestly say it would be the dumbest thing Viacom has ever done. But having worked for them in the past, I can say it's not the first time they've made poor business decisions.

All these cable companies and DirectTV outfits are too expensive! There is so much junk in programing, I am building a DVD library to eventually cancel them some time in the future!

That really is not a bad idea. I don't watch a lot of TV and only watch maybe 5 different channels. The other channels are pretty much a waste of money!

We refuse to pay for TV! We don't have it. They charge more then I pay for my electric for stupid channels. I hate commercials which is on more then half the time. Time Warner calls me at least once a month begging me to sign up with cable, but I refuse.

My parents do have satellite because of where they live. I think they have dish. They changed the packages and cut out the cartoon channels unless you pay for the next size package. They are already paying out more then 100 a month! They only channel that is on most of the time is nick or Disney because of my niece.

And people wonder why we refuse to get cable TV for our house.. This ranks right up there along with our kid wanting to do nothing but watch TV all the time whenever he's around cable (like at Gram's house).

That is why I changed to Dish Network. It is cheaper and does not continually raise your bill every couple months. I am still paying the same amount for my tv services now as I was a year ago when I signed up.

also there is no point in switching providers because Viacom will be seeking the same deal from other providers and by switching to dish you lose amc, ifc and Sundance channels

I hate this!!!! It seems to me like Directv tries to lowball everyone and thats why they have so many disputes. I watch so many shows on Viacom, and I have a package soley for the viacom contributions to it,so I hope it comes back soon. I watch a soap style show that airs m-f and I had to miss tonights because it cut off right at the time it starts

Yes, I have DirectTV, and it sucks that they're pulling this money making BS, but honestly, those shows are mostly trash and I despise them anyway. Not Nick though. Nick is good!
