Can you drive stick?

Contributor: Jul!a Jul!a
So I'm asking because I'm constantly surprised at the amount of people these days who can't or won't learn to drive a manual transmission. I first started learning when I was 15 and my mom's boyfriend tried to teach me, but I finally learned when I was 17 and got my first stick shift car, learned 3 on the tree on a former friend's Valiant, and most recently learned how to shift a motorcycle a few years ago when I got one of those. I'm also really surprised by how many people are surprised that I can drive stick as a female. More ladies should know how to do this, for sure.

So how about the rest of you?

I grew up driving an auto, never learned on a manual. Then my father in law gave me his manual to learn on. It's great, but my wife doesn't drive stick so I use it as a (third) commuter car. The next car I buy will have to be auto in case she needs to use it. I do find that I feel lazy after a while and after a long day of work I prefer to rest my legs with an auto, but on weekends I am in the mood to play around with the stick.

It was never an issue while I was growing up in Kansas City - there, you learned stick no matter what your gender. I didn't learn because the driving classes I took (in Florida) only had automatics. Dad says my driving style is more suited to manual and he wants to teach me when I get my next car.

I'm an oddball in this respect but I refuse to drive an automatic if there's any other choice.

If I have to do a lot of stop and go I definitely prefer the automatic, and while driving my fiance's baby truck, which is a stick, for the last few days, I'm remembering why I always drove barefoot. The clutch starts to pull my sandals a weird way and makes my foot go numb if I keep it on while stuck in traffic or at red lights, lol.

Me too. With the snowy weather we get, I feel so much more in control with a manual transmission.

Plus, it's fun.

I have only ever driven automatic. I'd like to learn to drive stick just to have the skill, but on a practical standpoint I don't see that happening. Both of our vehicles are automatic, and all of our friends and family drive automatics as well.

I remember when I first learned to drive a stick shift - I got stuck at a light for about 10 changes because I thought I was in first but I was in third and I kept stalling out

Our truck is a shift, and I don't mind driving it, but my automatic is so much easier.

After having two ex boyfriends and my parents try to teach me...it just won't work out for me. i'm automatic all the way!

Ladies, in case of a zombie apocalypse, you must know how to drive stick...just in case!

How else will you nab a dump truck or armored car for safe transport?

I've only ever had manual transmission cars. My boyfriend had to drive my first stick shift car off the lot for me. I second what Victoria said - what if you have to make an escape in a dump truck or 18-wheeler?? I like the extra flexibility of being able to drive them, and besides, it's just more fun -- except when you sprain your left ankle!

EXACTLY!

I learned how to drive a stick when I was 18.

I love how they keep people from talking on the phone (or texting) while driving!

Well, my first vehicle I pick out was a stick shift truck. I have tried to learn, had a few friends take me out in it and some of my friends have let me try to drive their stick shift car. But I couldn’t get the hang of it quick enough. My truck ended up need some work done and sat in the drive way for months. With my parents need the money we ended up selling it. So I have tried to learn and I still want to learn. Just haven't had the time or have found anyone with enough patients to teach me. I just cant shift the damn thing without stalling out every time... lol..

My plan for the zombie apocalypse is to ride a bicycle or find some other means of transportation (velociraptor, anyone?) to JR's place. He can drive stick shift all the way if he wants to My job will be to raise and train a ferocious kitten army, fearless and peerless, to demolish the zombie pestilence with a wave of cuteness and goodwill.

Kittens with mini-flamethrowers and tiny axes. Now that would be cute and effective.

Kind of funny story. A few months after My Man and I got legal, we decided to get rid of my crappy 1979 Mustang (Ford at it's worse) and got a tiny little imported car with stick. Did I mention that it was 100 degrees in the shade that day? Did I mention that I was 8 months pregnant? Did I mention that we had brought his truck, which was stick, and traded my Mustang, and that I had NEVER in my life ever driven stick before?

I had to follow him home with only about a 5 minute lesson from him on how to drive stick, too far from the pedals, because of my huge Baby Belly, and crying, because I couldn't get the thing over the crest at the end of the parking lot, trying to rock the car over the crest onto the....street...... and people were honking at me, AND I WAS PREGNANT and it was HOT and the car kept dying, and then rolling backward and my HUSBAND was standing across the road, next to his truck, just LOOKING at me!

I went into labor a few days later, never having driven the car again, after my traumatic experience.

I did learn on my own, AFTER the baby was born. (After crashing the damn car into the garage door and destroying it, because I put the car into NEUTRAL when it was turned off and SOMEBODY decided to leave it in 1st gear, and I started it, with a newborn BABY in the backseat and it crashed right through the garage!!!!

I then calmly backed the car up, left the garage for dead, and Baby and I went to my lunch date with a friend.

I eventually learned how to properly drive stick and I don't mind it at all. But, I advise, NEVER have a near Ausperger's man, who already KNOWS how to drive stick, can't understand why you DON'T know how, has no patience and absolutely is bereft of teaching skills "teach" you how to drive stick. (Basically, in this scenario, you teach yourself, when he isn't home and casually mention, "Oh yeah, you left the fucking car in gear, so I destroyed the garage when I turned it on and it snapped into First. I think the car needs a new bumper, too. Have fun fixing it. I'm taking the baby and going shopping, now that I mastered the thingy. ")

Thus, I am somewhat prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse. Now, if My Man's truck had a Rifle Rack and we had a basement full of canned food, we'd be set.

I learned how to drive on a stick and couldn't imagine driving an automatic. It'd be convenient (I live near a ton of mountains, and driving constantly in 3rd kinda sucks), but so much less fun.

Definitely possible! My last job was as a service technician and despite giving all techs a stick to drive they expected us to answer the phone in a heartbeat. Definitely learned how to juggle actions.

It's not so bad to answer the phone, but I won't text while driving a manual. Well, it's illegal to text while driving at all in my state, but this was before that went into effect, lol

I learned how to drive a stick as part of the requirements for my last job. It was a pain in the ass at first until I got used to it. Now I do miss it sometimes and did enjoy driving a stick but I have to admit, if I'm going on a road trip (which I LOVE to do) a stick would drive me bonkers. Our last road trip was 1500 miles one way and fiddling around with a stick and clutch during that drive would make things too tedious.

Same here.....I have several military vehicles from world war 2 and some other 2.5 ton trucks in my backyard. Most of them are stick. I also tow alot and I would rather tow trailers with my 1993 manual f250(pickup truck) then my 2008 or my 2009 f250 automatic. Because I have better control of the rpms, not to meantion its way easier and you can do better offroad with a manual trans

I don't actually have "no desire to learn" but I certainly have no real DESIRE to learn either. I'd 'like' to learn...but practicality rules in my world, and driving automatic has never been a barrier at any point in time so far in my 14 years of driving. So it's not exactly something I've put high on my 'learning priority' list.

Since manual cars are cheaper to buy than their automatic counterparts, I could see myself buying one and having to learn because of it, because I am cheap like that, but that's about it.
