Gotta have beans.

As far as the first chili, I would bet that it DID have beans. Beans were always one of the big staples, all those many years ago. (what are we talking here? BC?) They are easy to grow, easy to cook, easy to store, easy to transport and can be added to LOTS of different meals, if not all.

I know it's technically not chili without beans, but I have a big texture issue with beans. I just don't like them.

Had a great bowl of Chili last night - looking forward to the leftovers.I like the several types of beans - combined with lost of lean ground beef and piping hot corn bread on the side.

With beans. The people who get all anal retentive about chili being beans-free are aggravating. Where I live, there is an annual chili contest, where if you bring in a chili made with beans, they will refuse entry to you.

Beans, but not too many. Just a can to add to the protein and consistency.

Heh. I make a killer vegetarian chili with three different beans, celery, acorn squash, corn, tomato sauce, and proper seasoning. Nothing even imitating meat in mine.

Kermit's Chili in Colorado is the best. They have both types.

I prefer mine with beans. Otherwise it's just meat in a bunch of sauce that needs to be ladled onto something.

My boyfriend is allergic to beans so I make chili without, but its just not the same. I love when I get to enjoy chili with beans in it.

I have never had, or even seen, chili without beans. All the chili I've ever eaten was at least 75% beans. What is it even made of if there are no beans? Just meat and sauce? That seems kinda gross.

I always make it with beans. Without them it's just meat in sauce, really.

Some people like said above are allergic to beans..

But the only time chili w/o beans is ok is coney dogs! lol!! Chili is meant to be with beans! Its just a bit weird w/o beans.

Two kinds of beans and chunks of tomatoes is an absolute must for me. The only exception is on a hot dog. Then I want chili sauce which is a completely different recipe by itself.

We have a friend who is a firm believer that chili should be just meat and sauce, but both of us have always had beans in our chili so it just seems so natural to hsve them

I'm a vegetarian, so any chili I make is alllllll about beans!

I occasionally use fake meat products in my chili, but even then I include beans.

Ooh, that sounds delicious, Chilipepper! I made some with black beans and garbanzo beans, no meat or meat imitation in there. Yum!

And I prefer chili with beans and w/o meat in general.
