DECEMBER 21, 2012!!

Contributor: PassionateLover2 PassionateLover2
Someone had to ask this question! We’ve all seen movies like “2012?, “Judgement Day”, “The Day When the Earth Stood Still”, and “Armegeddon”. So, what makes the year 2012 so special? Is it all a science-fiction tale and another apocalypse hoax?

Did you know that the genius Albert Einstein has warned humanity of a great pole shift that will alter the planet Earth? NASA also confirms that solar storms are headed our way. Scientists agree that the Earth will complete its 26,000 year wobble very soon. Furthermore, our astronomers have discovered that our sun will go through a galactic alignment which puts us on the same plane as the Milky Way in 2012.

Have you noticed that there have been greater occurrences of disasters lately? Tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, droughts – we’ve blamed it all on the “Inconvenient Truth” a.k.a. global warming. So do you believe that by December 21, 2012, the end of earth and civilization as we know it will END?

I mean, there's an asteroid that has a large possibility of hitting us in 2020 or 2012 or something (it has been a LONG time since I took astronomy.) Either way, it has nothing to do with Mayan prophesies, and quite honestly you have no idea when you're going to die anyway. The idea that the world is ending soon shouldn't change your humanity or sense of mortality.

Also, Mayans still exist. And from my understanding, they see this as some crazy Western culture hype.

The Mayans didn't count leap year or daylight savings so according to them it's already 2016. Also, according to my religion, don't know what you're basing yours off of, but my religion says no man but GOD will know the time or day and to say you do is blasphemous.
The Earth Alters every couple of years anyway. The sun IS in the milky way. That's why we call it our sun.... the milky way is a galaxy, a whole huge galaxy, that the sun has been in for.... 26000 years?
As for the disasters (I'm going back to religion) stop ticking off GOD and He'll stop punishing us.
Also, the world can't end on that day because my bday is the 22nd. Lol. =)

There's always some galactic alignment going on somewhere in the universe. There's always been natural disasters going on in Earth's history.

Question: "Interesting times we live in or what?"
Answer: "In your lifetime, maybe. Let's ask Joan of Arc. Or Leonardo Di Vinci. Or Marie Antoinette. How about Nikola Tesla - now that was an interesting time he lived in, too."

I do believe that a doomsday will occur, but I don't think there will be a damn thing anyone can do about it. I refuse to spend my life worrying about something that could happen. Because I could have an airplane crash into my house. Doesn't stop me from living near the airport. I think it's nonsense that religion uses to try to get more donations out of people who think there is something you can do about it if you warn enough people. Seriously, if a huge meteorite crashes into Earth, the likelihood that anyone would survive is small and the likelihood that anyone would survive the aftermath is small too. We need to worry about things we can actually prevent, not the enviable. And death is the enviable.

I don't *not* believe it can happen, but I don't really concern myself with it. If the world is ending, there truly is nothing I can do about it so I will keep on with life as normal.

I did leave my daughter (age 6) watching a youtube video on the Hubble telescope for a school project and she came running in screaming about how she saw a video that said the world is ending in 2012. And since it was on Youtube, it HAD to be true *SIGH* That took a long time to convince her evetrything was fine.

While there could be a doomsday, I highly doubt it will be on a day we can predict.

Since we can't predict it, I'll just go on living my life the best way I know how, and when my death comes, it'll come. No sense worrying about it.

I do not think it will be "the end". We will not be that lucky. Many tribulations will and must happen before then. No man knows the hour or the day, much less the year. Only God.

As for "the end of the world as we know it"; Everyday the world is changing very rapidly and not in a good way as I can figure.

However there DOES seem to be an "awakening" of a sort going on among some.

In my opinion, the media, movies and hype are a way of "conditioning" the populace to gradually accept the disasters to come our way.

The "real" Mayan council has announced that the doomsday date 12/21/12 is NOT true and is only western hype.

As far as planets hitting us and solar storms, yes these are plausible disasters which will be tribulations to all, but not the "end of the world". Just the end of the world as we know it now.

We all have to die one day. I try to concentrate on being the best I can be as a human being until then...whenever that may be.

I just hope The End of the World is broadcast live. I'm counting on you, Internets.

I'm fairly certain the Earth and it's humans will survive 2012, for the most part. But for those of us who just want to watch the world burn, don't fret: we've still got plenty of possible existential catastrophes! Wikipedia, take it from here...

It's interesting that you talk about an 'awakening'. One meaning of 'apocalypse' is 'a revelation of knowledge'.

EDIT: To be clear, that meaning is different from an epiphany. Mainly because they're spelled differently.

If it happens, it happens. The turn of the century was supposed to be a big deal, too. We all know how that turned out.

And I made bank babysitting. $50 a kid, 7 kids, $350 for a night because they all thought it was going to end. I was 15, that was some great money. Anyone need a babysitter so they can go out and get wasted the night before the world is supposed to end or something? $50 a kid

I'm actually super excited about the magnetic pole switch that will happen in my lifetime. That's just a fabulous scientific event.

Oh hey, something that is happening June 3rd, 2012 that won't happen again for another 127 years: Venus will be transiting the sun. ie. Venus will be lined up between Earth and the Sun, so as it passes by, you can view it like a solar eclipse. Make a simple sun viewing box and you can watch it happen.

And I don't think there is an increase in natural disasters. We, and I mean the entire existence of humans, are a blip on the the timeline of Earth and the solar system, and we have only been more accurately recording and making news of natural disasters across the world in the last 150 years. Krakatoa was one of the first major disasters that was news for the world and discussed openly by scientists across multiple continents. And that was because it was such a huge event, scientists all over the world could measure and observe the effect. 12% of the planet HEARD one of this volcanoe's hand-full of major explosions. A painter in Argentina spent 2 years painting the sunset because of the amazing effects the dust particles had in the atmosphere. Krakatoa is located near Java and Sumatra. And that happened in 1888.

There is simply not enough data to really postulate whether or not the Earth is changing in a way that humans will be wiped out in some major event. We have a historical perspective that is far too narrow make any assumptions that there is more or less activity as of late than there has been over many, many, many millions of years.
