Do you feed your backyard birds?

Contributor: Rossie Rossie
It's freezing outside, and there are not many food source available for the backyard birds, I feed shelled raw sunflower seeds to the ones that visit my backyard year round. Those little things can gobble up 6 lbs of seeds per week! Do you feed your backyard birds also?

We have a family of magpies who feed on our compost all year round. They let us get fairly close to them and will bring their newly flying babies down to show us.

Do you only do that in winter? If I leave stale bread in my backyard during summer, there'll probably be more ants than birds!

Birds and squirrels we try to feed. But it's not at the top of the priority list so if we forget, we don't really worry about it.

That's so adorable! We don't have any magpies, we have a lot of juncos, sparrows, chickadees, common ground doves, red-shafted flickers, towhees, and one very noisy bluebird. There's always a squirrel that's trying to snatch all the seeds, and I have to let my dog chase it away.

I put a bird feeder outside my window so my cat would be entertained. I always keep a good mix of seeds in it (not the crap with 75% corn) including finch seeds. I feed the squirrel too, because my cat likes him.

Sometimes I feed the ducks at the park. But not the geese, b/c geese are jerks.

My father-in-law is a huge bird feeder - but my wife hates birds! As a kid my mom would throw stale bread out for the birds - but I follow my wife's wishes here - no feeding the birds.

Your cat likes the squirrel, or WANTS the squirrel?

Damn should of voted for and other critters too. We feed the squirrels and birds, since we live in the city we really do not want to feed much of anything else or we will have a skunk or possum living under the house and we do not want that. We did see that a raccoon the other night, they are so freaking cute.

My family always feeds the backyard birds in the cool months when it's hard for them to find food. So now that I'm grown, I do the same.

We often used to put up those nets with lots of different seeds for birds up in the tree in the backyard, but even since the tree was cut down we sort of stopped doing it.

We've been feeding the regional cats though, LOL.

I just scatter sunflower seeds on my concrete patio, the birds finish them up before returning to their nests late in the afternoon. I don't even have to cleanup after them, because I only buy seeds that were shelled.

I would love to feed the little birdies in my back yard but I never buy any seeds or anything. Maybe I should start

I love watching the birds. Perhaps I should buy some feed for them. There are starlings and juncos and they're all quite cute.

The birds crap all over my patio, grill, table and chairs! So, no I don't feed them! I have nothing against them except for their crapping everywhere. So gross and unsanitary

We feed the hummingbirds and have just found out that near the Puget Sound there are hummers that do not migrate south for the winter.

I feed them once in a while, but dh doesn't like the birds to be attracted to our yard due to all the crap that comes with it.

Lucky for me my birds like to perch on tree branches when they poop, and the droppings land on the mulch, so it's not too much of a mess.

I remember making bird feeder's in middle school out of fat and seeds. I think that was the last time I fed the birds.
