Odd question about love. vs. war in public...

Contributor: Breas Breas
A couple days ago I had seen on someone's Facebook a photo with a quote. The quote was something along the lines of, "We live in a society where it is acceptable to make love in private and make war in public". I don't actually remember the quote but it was something along those lines. I thought it was quite accurate.

I was wondering what everyone thought about this... Do you feel it is accurate? Any thoughts?

The poll question is private so please be honest : ) The first answer of "I'd rather see war in public can mean physical fighting, verbal fighting, etc. The second poll response of "I'd rather see love be made in public" can mean something simple as a hug, kisses, etc.

I'd rather see love in public - it bothers me to witness fighting no matter where it happens.

I'm kind of confused--kisses and hugs in public in the States is pretty well accepted in most places. Arguing and yelling in public is considered causing a scene, and generally people look down on people losing their shit in public, so I don't know how that's more acceptable. It's kind of an odd quote--and I don't know what it's getting at.

If it means actual physical affection in private, well, yeah--that's why it's called a private life. It requires a certain sort of intimacy that requires you to let your guard down a bit. It's not really comfortable for most people in a public space. If it means actual fighting and arguments in public, well, anger is one of those emotions that can hit you pretty hard, and people tend to react, especially if they feel threatened or the need to defend themselves (not necessarily physically--I mean like, defend their argument or their side of the situation). That's just human nature.

Unless I'm missing something profound, it sounds like a silly quote.

I'd rather see PDA than a cat fight but neither would be fine with me.

I'd rather see neither. To be fair, I'm judging "love" as if it were something equal in intensity as fighting. A kiss and a fist fight are very different things.

I hate when others argue in public!! I do not feel that people should put others in that position, but it does happen more often than it should.

I don't really understand the quote (although Iraq and Afghanistan were some of the least covered in detail by the press wars)

I don't mind of people hold hands, do some quick hugging or cuddling or a quick kiss in public. I really don't want to see people fucking at the Jewel, though. "Hey! Get get off those nectarines! I wanted to buy them!"

I think if the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq had nightly footage, like Vietnam did, they would have ended sooner. It was the sight of all those young men dying, bleeding, suffering and taking bullets and mortars for nothing that spurred the Peace Movement and ended the Vietnam war. GW Bush made sure we saw little that he didn't want to see of those wars, so people were unconnected and as a result, Afghanistan is the longest war in American History and Iraq, which never should have happened, dragged on much too long. Yes. These two wars should have been more public. But, the Hawks who make money off of war *coughCheney*cough* made sure that didn't happen

I'd rather see love personally. I was at the park walking a few weeks ago and I noticed an old couple, probably in their 80's holding hands and walking together and you could see they were still passionatly in love with one another. It melted my heart because that is what realtionships are made from and I hope someday I get to that point in my life. That being said, In today's society people are so uptight about public displays of affection and yet the media contastantly post pictures of all people shooting others, the fighting oversea's and the list goes on. It seems politically correct or acceptable to see "war" but not acceptable to see people share love. Maybe that is what is wrong with this world today. We all forgot how to love one another.. Just saying...

It's a take off of the poster that was going around when I was in college in the 70's. It said; We know society is sick since "if you are watching a movie and a man cuts a womans breast off, it is called "horror" and given a PG rating, where you can bring your kids. However if he dares KISS that breast instead, then it is called a "REAL HORROR" and given a "X" rating and one better keep it out of any decent persons sight".
