Pubic Hair... You Shave or Choose Not to Shave. That Is the Question.

Contributor: aliceinthehole aliceinthehole
i've noticed here from one particular poll regarding techniques people use to remove their furs that i am in the minority, at least in this community, as one who embraces her pubes as a welcome body feature.

my newest boyfriend shocked me when he (initially) shyed away from going down on me because of my 'hippy hairstyle' and said he'd 'never been with a girl who didn't go bare.' i found that shocking. and i attributed his personal bald upkeep to his ideas extracted from popular porn. i mean, in the 70's i really just don't see this sort of exchange happening.

so i'm curious what the actual % out there is. am i a hippy freak and you are practically all bare down there?

if you do get rid of some or all of your fur, what made you decide? i'm very interested in the decision making process one goes through before changing their pubic hairstyle. i personally used to shave because my first boyfriend told me it was 'skanky' and i was young, dumb, and impressionable. i shaved until age 19 when i started transitioning in many ways, and broke away from alot of previous ideas that i felt were keeping me from growing into the most free person i could be.

is it for cleanliness? for your partner? did you see someone with no hair once and compare it to your own, and feel you needed to change? all of the above?

thanks for your input.

I do it because I like the way it looks and feels. In the summer I especially like how airy it feels when it's bare. My husband could care less either way, I always had a lot of pubic hair and it has always bugged me, so when I started shaving I shaved it all from a young age. I also wax off my arm hair and shave my legs and underarm hair every day. No one or nothing has influenced me to do it. It's just my own freaky personal preference! We're all freaky in our own way! If you like yours natural, then totally go with it! To me it's all about what makes you feel good and comfortable.

I either go bare or leave a mohawk. =]

I don't like having hair down there. I'd rather have a small amount or none at all. I don't like my guy having a lot either, I prefer he trims. Not sure why, going "hippy" isn't my thing. If it's yours, more power to you!

Usually when I shave, I shave it all but I'm not especially diligent about it. If I'm in a rush or if I'm feeling lazy I'll just touch up the bikini line and leave it at that. I don't mind having a bush as long as it's trimmed/short, but I do feel way sexier when I'm bare. As far as I can figure, I just like the feeling of being smooth and naked.

When I do shave everything, it's usually in preparation for a sexytime with the boyfriend. When I'm single I'm too lazy to do much of any maintenance down there. That said, the lad doesn't care all that much if I'm lax with the upkeep. I also find that I tend to masturbate right after shaving to take advantage of the smoothness - all in all, I'm gonna say I do it for both me AND him, but I'm slightly more motivated to do it for him.

For me it depends on if I am seeing someone or not, and also if I will find myself on the verge of having sex with them. But if I am not seeing anyone (which is the norm for me) I just let the shit grow. No point in getting it waxed or trimming it,then later on having to sit there scratching like crazy when it starts to come back in. Lol But then again, thats just me....

i'm right there with ya! the itchiness kills me!
when i let my beau talk me into letting him shave me recently, the deal afterwards was that i got to punch him anytime it started itching (playful punches, of course. i couldnt hurt a flea, let alone that sweet boy. naughty as he may be.) as his punishment for taking away my power and giving me itchy red bumpy sad vulva in its place!

I also leave a Mohawk sometimes! My pubs are red and he thinks of it as a novelty gift of some kind! Makes me laugh!

Ive just always like the feeling of nothing being there (for girls) I dont like if a guy has his bald but I guess I just feel like its cleaner? Unshaved can be very clean too its just a feeling I have like another example, if i had no hair on the top of my head id feel cleaner compared to my long hair now. I also feel more confident with no hair there. My boyfriend now begs me not to shave and I did it once I was just overly self conscious about it. Im extremely shy so even if it was perfect to me Id be like DONT LOOK!

Totally naked down south. Someone I was chatting to online mentioned shaving it all off, so I decided to give it another go.
But I absolutely can't stand razor shaving. It really drives me insane as the prickles grow. I hate even the feel straight after shaving - it's never perfectly smooth. So I use an Emjoi (rip the hair out) rechargeable shaver which is divine. My skin is baby smooth and sooooo lickable!

I can't stand any hair now!

The wife and I are bare - I went first, then she tried and liked the increased sensitivity of her bare vulva so much she's gone on to get a Brazilian laser job done - it was very effective, she only has to trim a few strays here and there.

I'm glad everyone is being so nice and respectful. I hate when things like...pubic hair get people riled up.

It makes no difference to My Man how I do my pubic hair. I've worn it 70s full bush style and he loved it, I usually now trim (just because I went natural for so long I wanted to see what it felt like) and it's OK. I did take it all off once and My Man seemed to go down on me really gingerly. Gunsmoke said maybe he felt it was too...much. So, I've gone back to trimming, and keeping a little landing strip. When I'm in a hurry, I end up accidentally shaving the landing strip off, then I have to start over.

If you keep doing it, the itching eventually stopped. I probably shaved for a few months before that happened. I used to only trim in the summer so I wouldn't fall out of my bathing suit, and it itched like hell. But, I do it regularly and I don't notice any problems anymore

The way I see it, its YOUR pubic hair, you do with it what you like. I don't have any preference for women, as its their body.

I like My Man anyway he likes, which is always natural. He's older (early 50s) and wouldn't think of taking a razor to his balls.

I shave, leaving just a thin landing strip for decoration, because I hate the feel of hair down here (I go crazy if it's more than 1/16" or so.) That's my personal preference, though. My guy says he just doesn't want it completely wild, I'm assuming because of looks (I'm not the type to receive oral.)

I have VERY limited experience, but the people I've talked to about it either shave or trim. I think I put it in the same category as waxing eyebrows, wearing bras in public, keeping nails neat, tanning, etc... Stuff that isn't necessary per se, but can kind of be used to gauge how much someone works to keep attractive according to society's more vain standards.

Maybe it's just being a girl, but I don't see how guys shave their balls, it looks kind of dangerous with all the skin...

I have no agenda with this - only personal preference. As you say the itching goes away with regular grooming - just like a man's beard or a ladies underarms.

My wife thought I was crazy for shaving - I started doing it way before it was popular for men to do it. I think at some level my wife felt 'obliged' to reciprocate. But it was only after she took the plunge that she started to experience the benefits for her - not me. For her the greater sensitivity, ease of clean up, elimination of any odor - and my enthusiastic response were all factored into her decision to make it permanent through the laser.

But everyone's different, shaving for some is just out of the question due to ingrown hairs and other issues.

To each their own...

I trim, but I hate the feeling of having it completely bare. I sometimes feel bad that I'm not clean shaven down there, but my boyfriend doesn't care and that's the only person who is going to see it, so I'm okay with it.

i had a full bush up until right before my sophomore yr in college. i shaved it all to try it out, & after doing it for a while & getting over how itchy it was the 1st few times i shaved, i loved it. it's easier to keep clean & i've even read where some doctors say its better to at least keep it trimmed b/c it's more hygenic. the guy i'm dating now actually likes it when i keep it trimmed rather than shaved, but i like the way it feels when it's bald.

haha about the ball-shaving... trimming around all those flower folds is a little dangerous too without a partner! i'd hate to nick THAT skin!

and you totally made me giggle with the 'decoration' bit.

wow, after getting a few votes on this, looks like i was right!

full bush falls in at least preferred method of pubic hair upkeep
trimming at 3rd
removing most of the hair at 2nd and the big not-so-surprise...

most folks DO shave completely. all their fur.

bare down there!

i just cant imagine after going free for so many years. if it weren't so prickly and painful, and if i didn't feel that at one point in my life i'd lost control over my body by succumbing to another's ideas about my pubic hair...

i'd probably still not shave it.

ha. guess i'm just a little hippy. rebel. 70's porn star.

and so it shall be.

Though, I will add! Aesthetically, I find it most appealing on women when there is at least SOME hair. Trimmed up, it looks best to me. Though, on men, I like them all grown out.

Why would you feel bad about not being "clean shaven?" It's your body, to do with what you want.

There's no law, and there are certainly a lot of people who never touch their pubic hair. I've worked in women's health, and although shaving adn removing hair is common for teens, 20s and early to mid 30s, the majority of older women simply do not remove much, if any pubic hair.

And, it's really a new thing. 20 years ago, the only women you saw "Clean shaven" were strippers, porn models and.... professionals. I know some older doctors (mostly OBGYNs and Internists) who still think all women who shave are "in the business" somehow.

Do what YOU are comfortable with. I see no reason to feel "bad" about YOUR choice for YOUR body.

We both keep it bare. It's just more comfortable and we both find it more visually appealing.
