Thrifting: Do you do it?

Contributor: Tangles Tangles
Do you buy clothes and other things from thrift stores and re-sale shops? I've been trying to do buy more from re-sale shops to cut down on my carbon footprint and constant consuming. Plus you can get some really good deals from thrift stores.

I love thrifting. A lot of the time I can get clothing way over my budget. I scored a pair of Jimmy Choo heels for $5.00 a couple of months ago. No way I could ever get a pair at full price.

I didn't use to but since I get bored of my clothes so quick it only made sense to start thrifting. And I just scored recently I got an eddie bauer swing for my baby on the way for $5.

I like to, but the thrift stores in my area don't carry any clothing I would wear. Most of them have clothes from the 80's and stuff. If I go to a thrift store in the city, I can find some things I like.

I'm a thrifty person, but I cannot stand something that has been worn by a stranger.

I can't persuade myself to do it since the bedbug epidemic at Goodwill stores.

Sometimes. We have a nice value village near us and sometimes I've shopped there.

I love thrifting. The local thrift store has 50% sales on the last Saturday of the month. It gets crowded, but hardcover novels for 20 cents makes it SO worth it to brave the crowds.

Half of my clothes are from thrift stores! That's pretty much the only way we can afford a lot of things, so~

In New York, Goodwill is really no more likely to have bed bugs than like, a a waiting room at a doctor's office. They're sadly just sort of common in the metropolitan area. I understand why some people would avoid thrifting for that reason, though. I'm pretty good at sussing out bad pieces, but I also mostly thrift for clothes, appliances, kitchen ware, etc. I would definitely be reluctant to bring home any furniture because there are lots of places for roach eggs and the like to hide. I am very into second hand furniture, just not from a big chain like that. It's better to peruse garage or moving sales, easier to ask questions and get histories. But, yes, you know that Cat Power song "Lived In Bars"? If they wrote a soundtrack to my life, the opening score would be called "Lived In Salvos". We throw out way too much good shit in the United States!

It's been mentioned in the news from time to time, thrift stores periodically hire pest control people to their locations to prevent bug infestations from happening. A while back, a lady bought a bedroom furniture set that was visibly clean, disinfected everything when she brought it home, slept on the bed that night and was chewed up by bedbugs, and those pesky things spread all over her house!

But of course, like Owl Identified said, you can be in contact with bedbugs at other places too; that's why I'm not in the mood to travel much nowadays, worried that there's bedbugs at hotels.

I'm hooked ever since finding a vintage French corset for $5.

Also, for anyone with kids it's such a great recycling option: you can buy next-to-new kid clothes for a fraction of the cost, and donate the clothes back to the shop once they've grown out of them.

Love to shop thrift stores. I do it as much as possible. My mother and step-father actually had a second-hand store when I was growing up, so it is probably in my blood.
