Trying to dress to impress

Contributor: Illusional Illusional
Okay, so my boyfriend is an older guy. He'll be turning 30. I'm 23.. it's not a big deal but he's European and he's into nice dresses. I'm from Texas and was raised in sneakers in blue jeans. He really loves me despite disliking jeans, and for his birthday he wants us to have a nice... grown-up ish dinner. Like.. candles and stuff.

That makes me stomach hurt.
So, this isn't until March so I won't freeze and die.
However, I do need help on what kind of shoes and dress to wear, maybe some links?

I can show you guys some pictures if needed, but I am plus size. Like a 18.
40'D, flabby arms, but nice shoulders/clavicles

I'm 5'10 too, so do I still wear heels or no?

PLEASE HELP.

Girl, I am here to help!

I would suggest that you wear a wrap dress based on your build. They are extremely flattering on curvy women, because the emphasize the waist and flow away from the hips, balancing things out a bit and creating a really nice shape. (Can you tell I watch What Not To Wear? LOL!)

The great thing about wrap dresses is they can be dressed up or down, and you can also get them sleeveless, with short sleeves, or with 3/4 sleeves. Basically, you can find a wrap dress for any occasion.

Here's a couple of examples, both from Amazon-

Who cares if you're tall?! Rock those heels! I think a pair of classic black closed-toe pumps would be great with a wrap dress, add a bold statement necklace, nylons if you want or it's chilly- and instant "grown up" sex goddess! I can give more specific examples if you need them! Let me know what you think, and good luck hun! I know you'll look gorgeous!

Jesibel gave you some great advice. All I could think of while reading it was "She sounds just like Stacey and Clinton..." Yeah, I used to watch it too!

Wear something you are comfortable wearing. Confidence really is sexy.

Also, rock heels, but not if your boyfriend is much shorter than you. Some guys might feel awkward if their girlfriend towers over them. Good luck! You're going to look gorgeous!

I agree with the wrap dress - I am also an 18 and that's what I look best in, too.

You will definitely feel better with 3/4 sleeves. Most of them are made from jersey so they move with you and you won't feel constricted.

You can also get away with knee-high high heel boots with such a dress. Very sophisticated.

That green dress is gorgeous. I have the same problem though, dressing to impress is difficult for me. What's wrong with my jeans and sneakers? It's easier in the summertime when I can wear sundresses and stuff, but winters in the Northeast are difficult!

Wow, a wrap dress? I've never seen those. Those are nice, could I use it for a cocktail sort of thing?

Lol, I am taller than my boyfriend by like an inch... nothing more lol

And he doesn't mind me being taller in heels, I do.

Can you do wedge heels?
I'm not super skilled in heels yet, lol.

The kind of boots I have in mind (which are similar to what I wear with my wrap dress) are these link

The heel is reasonable in height and is large enough to give you good balance.

I second boots like these, I have a pair that I wore to a Winter wedding a few years ago and they were easy enough to walk in and I think they'd look nice with a wrap dress too.

Ugh, yes I am the same way. It's much easier for me to dress nicely in the summer time. In the Winter my skin gets irritated so quickly that I don't want to wear anything but long sleeved shirts and hoodies with jeans. And shoes forget it, I hate shoes! In the Winter I like to wear clogs and sneakers so it's much easier to dress up with some strappy sandals in the Summer!

I'm thinking a nice green or red wrap dress, maybe a blue.

I typically wear hot pink and grey

Red or blue, jewel-tones if you can manage it. Those colors would be lovely with your complexion and eyes.

What counts as jewel tones?

Sorry I know nothing about fashion

Jewel tones ... the really deep, rich versions of colors ... blue would be 'sapphire' and red would be 'ruby' or 'garnet'. If you want green, look for 'emerald'.

Oooh, I second (third?) the suggestion for knee-high boots! You can go with a pair that has a shorter heel (like 3") if you aren't comfortable in higher.

I would personally do a little black dress- maybe something that falls just below your knees, has a neckline that shows off a little bit of cleavage and has a little bit of a sleeve so you don't feel like you're over-showing your arms.

I love big earrings, so I'd throw some cute chandelier earrings on, too. (The lighter the better, I hate heavy ones!)

Yes, emerald green, deep reds, pretty bold plums would all look good on you! Go for a dress that hits just below the knee but not any longer than mid-calf. And girl, check out some cute 'kitten heels' - they are comfy, easy to walk in, but still give the leg definition of regular heels - and they don't make you "too tall". God, I wish I could come help you get ready! If only you lived closer

I'm going to go into a different direction than just the wrap dress. Your man wants something that is really fancy right? How about something like this You can find some very pretty flats, like these or even more like these. I know you said something to me once about anxiety about dressing up. So, you don't have to do the dress AND the heels if it's going to make you so anxious that you are distracted from having a good time.

You could also take it in a COMPLETELY different, but still very chic, fancy, and stylish direction and try something like this which, with your height would look amazing (and you'd still be in pants, but looking SUPER ELEGANT!) with shoes like these, or these, or even these (which are my personal favorites)

Then you could do some awesome jewelry, I think these would look AMAZING!

And then maybe wear your hair up a bit with something like this for a pop of color!

THIS WAS FUN!

Believe you could especially if it is in a solid color or dark print.

A dress like this will slim your bottom half: link

You can then pair it with a shall or sleeve cover if you want to hide your arms. The texture will also slim you out a bit as well.

I chose this one: link
because I cannot stop thinking of you wearing it with those hats your mom makes! Classy! It is very similar to the first one Jez showed.

A girl after my own heart; she linked to Lane Bryant!

I fell in love with that shop while in the States. We need a Lane Bryant and a Torrid here! Or just add a Torrid to Syracuse so I can hop the border and shop for cheap in one city
