What annoys you while driving! (or as a passenger!)

Contributor: Peggi Peggi
Today while driving on my way to work, I got to wondering what annoys you as a driver or, if you can't or don't drive, what annoys you as the passenger! For the first part this can be something that you encounter every day or only in certain areas, maybe you notice it more at one point (like holidays) rather than most of the time! But what really gets you ready to pull out that middle finger or lay on the horn? Passengers, does the driver do anything in particular that drives you crazy, or how about observing other drivers or people (or things?). Just try to keep this friendly (because you never know who is one of the offenders who does exactly what you're complaining about!

I'll share first! And oh, I'll keep this list short because there are OH so many I could choose from!

I am a driver and I can't stand pedestrians. And not just any pedestrians. The type who don't use the crosswalks and walk out of NO WHERE in front of your car on roads where the speed limit is 30mph or over and there is no indication that someone may be walking through those darn bushes in the median!

I also can't stand it when drivers drive slowly in the left lane when they aren't planning on turning anytime soon! I don't mind slow drivers in the right lane but please, speed up if you are driving in the left so we can pass!

My guy who is a passenger can't stand it when people who are driving either in other cars or who are driving him around don't use their signals!!!

My biggest, above all else, totally, absolutely, positively, most annoying thing as a driver that people do is to get in the left lane and stay there! (This would be in the US, and on an 4-lane highway.) The left lane is for passing, and if you aint passing, then move over.

Okay, I'm better now...

I hate when people drive at whatever speed they are "comfortable" ; with. Whether that is 30 MPH above or 30 MPH below the speed limit. I hate being behind people who can't MOVE! Or people whose brain function is so slow, that it takes 2 full minutes to get a message from their eyes to their brain to their foot that the light turned green! Freaking MOVE!

I'm not a fan of bicycles on the road. (Waits for the shit to hit the fan.) Our roads are narrow and under construction here and some bicyclists seem to try to keep up with the flow of traffic. Pedaling madly and still going 20 MPH under the limit. They get in the way, I'm always afraid I'm going to hit them (and no matter if it was them who was doing something stupid the person in the car is always at fault) and they slow down the rate of traffic. I have to go into the oncoming lane just to avoid them, which could get me and my kids killed. In the City they have their own lanes and that works, but in the burbs, I wish they would go on the side walk. There is no room for them on our narrow suburban streets.

Bicyclists are required to follow the rules of the road, and that means keeping up with the speed limits too. Your being at fault would be like rear ending a car because you were following too close. Stupid because they're going too slow, but still. I agree that they shouldn't be on the road if they can't keep up with the speed limits, but it's also illegal for anybody (in Illinois) to ride a bicycle on a sidewalk over the age of 12. I learned that in traffic school a few years ago. And I had an experience this morning with a group of bicyclists who were taking up the same space as a car in the middle of the lane and going maybe 10 miles an hour. Granted the speed limit was only 25, but still. They also (illegally) rolled through a stop sign without stopping or signalling.

I also hate people who change lanes without looking, especially during motorcycle season. And the people who make the left turn as soon as the light turns green even though they don't have an arrow, they're just hoping the person in oncoming traffic will wait for them to go.

Riding someone's bumper. I mean, is that really freakin' necessary? It just freaks me out to no end. Though, some of that is because I'm still not used to the automatic transmission in the vehicle we have. I'm used to manual transmissions and I was able to gauge when my husband was preparing to stop. Now, he just stops. And it always seems like it's only two inches away from the other guy's bumper. Though I'm sure it's more like eight. LOL

The people that feel that Green means stop, The one on the cell phone that isn't paying attention to anything other than the conversation and finally that old person in front of me that rides the brakes at 5 mph in a 40 mph zone looking for that wooden nickle they dropped as a youth.

I hate being tailgated. With a passion. And I will tap my brakes and let my brake lights send a warning signal to the car behind me to "Get off my ass!" Especially on the highway going 70mph! Don't they realize how long their stopping distance is and even if I just sneeze there could suddenly be a huge incident on the highway?! And hey, it would be their fault for following too close to allow for a safe stop!

I also hate looking over and seeing people text, talking on a cell phone (not hands-free), or anything that takes that much attention away from the road. It makes me angry too cause many of the people I've talked to that are guilty pull the "But I'm safe about it./ It couldn't happen to me./ I can multitask better than the rest of them."

I get annoyed (not quite hate but still pretty strong) when people hit their brakes and slow way down before moving over to a shared turn lane. Seriously, the reason that shared turn lane extends the length of the road is so that you can get into it and slow down to turn without obstructing the moving traffic. Get over early enough to brake IN the lane and don't slow the rest of us down!

The people who can not put their cell phone down and pay attention to the road!!! I hate it when someone almost hits me and then acts like nothing happened. And if you are going to drive 35 MPH, please do not use the left lane. BUT MOST OF ALL - my husband, the back seat driver, he will tell me to turn or stop or watch out after I have already started to do so and scares the hell out of me. Which makes me mad when I realize there was no other car, he just wanted to drive by proxy! Sorry, I will quit before I really get going. Oh, I also keep it all inside, so I am in a grrrreat mood when we get home.

Where to begin? Drivers who HAVE to go 10-20 miles faster than the speed limit. drivers with phones, drivers who text, drivers who can't let a person walk, drivers who honk the horn, or ride a cars ass if they go less than 20 miles faster than the speed limit, those who don't watch the road. There is no where you need to go that fast and if there is, you should have left earlier.

There are way too many to rant about. My latest peeve: drivers that cruise through intersections with red light cameras, while the long line of cars following those jerks pray the light won't turn red on them!

I hate idiots who just walk out behind ya car when ya reversing. They can see a car reversing a hell of a lot easier than a driver can see them if in the blind spot. And some of them have kids. Brainless parents!

I also hate dropkicks who just can't handle sitting behind someone else. They just HAVE to pass even though they are going to do the exactly same speed as you are.

I hate tailgaters too! Sniff my ass for too long and ya will cop the brake light test.

This list could go on forever.....

A lot of our speed limits in my area are between 35 and 60 MPH. How can a bicycle go this fast? I don't see them ever doing it, and they are in the way, cause people to have to go into oncoming traffic to avoid them, and it causes a lot of problems. Especially when there's road construction.

Yes, I agree, I see NO bicycle riders obeying the rules of the road. They blow stop signs and stop lights, they don't signal when they are going to turn, they weave in and out of traffic and it's dangerous for drivers and for them.

When My Man sees a grown man on a bicycle on an arterial street, he always says the same thing, sarcastically, "Oh, poor guy got a DUI!"

Maybe keeping bicycles OFF of arterial streets would be the best idea. I mean really, I've seen people on bicycles on Route 83 and North AV, seen them on Route 53, seen them on Irving Park Road, seen them on Butterfield Road, where it's four lanes going in both directions and obscene traffic. A bicycle at the intersection of Butterfield and Highland AVE is suicide. Taking a bike on roads like this is just asking to be hurt. Or putting drivers in harm.

The one thing that annoys me most when driving is if someone is in such a big hurry to pull out in front of you and then go well below the speed limit. That drives me crazy!

Well, I have come to the conclusion that Lexus must be significantly more expensive than I thought, because it appears that the added upgrade of turn signals is all but unaffordable on those cars.

Not signaling is definitely the one that gets me... it's so dangerous!!

I can't remember the specific type of bike but it has gears a lot like a car would, and you would just shift up through the gears to go faster. I know it moves the chain around and that resistance changes, but that's about all I know. My mom did it all the time when she was younger, kept up with traffic on Northwest Highway and everything. So I know it's possible to do, the bicyclist just has to be willing to do it. 60 is a bit unreasonable, but 40 can be done.

But I will still agree that they should most definitely be more careful where they are. I don't have a problem with a cyclist trying to stay on the curb, I have a problem with the cyclists that ride 3 feet out in the street and like you said, make drivers have to either slow down to less than half the speed limit in some cases or pass in oncoming traffic. When there's no traffic coming I'll pass, but it's still extremely dangerous for everybody involved. Heavy traffic roads like the ones you mentioned I wouldn't ever take a bicycle down.

Find it annoying that seems like no one reads the signs. Every time we go shopping at this one place; it is a three way, only two are required to stop and like normal incoming traffic does not stop! The people with the stop signs roll right throw them and then honk when incoming traffic does not stop! There is a sign right there that says this and I can not tell you how many times we have almost got hit because these people are not paying attention. There is also a gas station where this is. One day my hubby was getting gas. So I decided to watch and count how many blew off the stop sign. In that short amount of time I saw 15 different cars not stop at those stop signs. I mean seriously isn't part of getting your licenses learning how to read the signs. If you can not follow the rules then do not drive!

Also drives us nuts when someone is skipping lanes and trying to speed all around everyone. Only to get stopped by the red light, or on the highway come to stopped traffic.

Oh and do not forget, drives us nuts when construction is going on. So 2 miles back there are signs left lane is closed and people wait til the absolutely have to get over to cut into the line. This only causes more of a delay. What 2miles back was not enough of a notice for you? Come one people read the signs! That is what they are there for.

Let's see: people who cut me off without so much as signal (and they barely clear my front bumper), people who ride their brake all the way down the road, tailgaters, people who speed in dangerous driving conditions, people who let their tiny children loose in parking lots (you can see them if they get behind you while you're backing out).

Sorry one more! I hate when I see anyone talking or texting on their phone. You can usually spot them out, they are the ones that appear to be DUI. This is because you can not pay attention to the phone and drive the damn car. Come on there are other people on the road, PUT DOWN THE DAMN PHONE AND DRIVE!

I think that is it.

It bothers me when people wait until the lane they eventually want to be in is open instead of just getting into traffic and then working their way over to the lane. Also, I live in a tourist area and during the summer months just trying to cross an intersection is an all day event. I cannot stand it when intersections are blocked because somebody didn't want you to get ahead of them. I feel like making a sign to let them know that I live at the beach, I can go anytime I want, right now I just want to go home. It's like people don't get the "one car in, one car goes' routine. Oh my god, and rubberneckers... aaaagghhh! I just thought of another one... when people continue driving despite the flashing light and sirens of EMS instead of pulling over.

Well so much makes me angry...but here is a short list: Excessive brakers drive me crazy! I don't know why, but people that hit their brakes every ten seconds piss me off so much. Slow drivers in the left lane also drive me insane. Rubbernecking is the worst! Really, is looking at an accident really worth making thousands of people late?! Lastly, are turning signals that fucking difficult to use? It's that lever thing on the left of your steering wheel, USE IT!

When you're in the acceleration ramp that drops onto a busy road and you've found an opening, signaled and appropriately sped up to merge, and the car behind the opening SPEEDS UP in order to CLOSE the opening and prevent you from merging.

OOOOK! New annoyance that I should've mentioned before!

"Death Machines" AKA busses!

At least the public transportation here, which terrifies my boyfriend and I! We've almost been run off the road on 3 separate occasions by busses! One time in particular, the bus was on the right shoulder after veering off and almost hitting a van. Then, without a signal he crosses from the right shoulder into the right lane, then OVER the middle lane and into the LEFT lane where we were driving, like I said NO signal so NO warning, and he must've had a heavy foot going on because I was doing a steady 30mph and he SPED in front of us BARELY managing to make it past our car! He almost clipped us and then slowed down, I had to literally slam on the brakes or I would've hit him, and I screwed up my rim on the curb! Psychos I tell you! And this happens ALL the time here! I called transportation and they didn't seem to care much, even though I gave them the cross street, time it happened and bus number. I even called the police since there WAS damage to my car, and nothing was done

No wonder people are so rude to busses! Now, the ones like Greyhound and stuff, they're ok. And I'm cool with them I'll let them over. But a city bus, it is now my mission to never let them over if I can safely help it, because chances are they'll try to kill me again!!!

Then there was another time where we were in the left lane and a bus almost hit the passenger side of the car where the boyfriend was. And I was run off the road when I was by myself once.

DEATH MACHINNNNNNES!
