What do you do when you can't sleep?

Contributor: Annemarie Annemarie
It's 5am, and I've been trying to sleep for about six hours now. When I can't sleep, I like to read, or write, or sometimes pull out a toy or two and have a little fun.

What do you do at night and you're unable to sleep?

Suffer through it. I'm too tired to concentrate on anything but my mind won't shut up. It takes me hours to get to sleep. I envy people who can pass out within ten minutes of their head hitting the pillow.

I have nights like that.
I'll either surf the web, grab a toy or two, watch something on TV... I'll eventually pass out.. Just got to try and get my mind to settle down and have it go to shutdown mode..

The best thing to do is just give up and stay awake. If you try to force yourself to go to sleep, your mind will eventually start thinking that it can't sleep in your bed and you'll have more issues.

Also, avoid napping during the day if you nap. Avoid caffeine after noon. No meals within 2 hours of going to bed.

I had to hear all this stuff a couple years ago when I had the same problem. They ended up prescribing me Klonopin(?) for the off label use of knocking me out.

If it gets to be too bad, a doctor trip may be in order.

Good luck!

Watch Family Guy, and I'm not saying that it puts me to sleep, I'm saying that it's one of the funniest shows ever created.

I either suffer through it or sometimes watch tv or pick up the lappy and do writing.

Write. Have sex. Wank off. Write some more.

Though that doesn't happen often anymore. Ambien is nectar of the gods.

Ditto (minus the writing or Ambien parts).

I'm prone to insomnia, so I take advantage of the quiet time to read, write, or listen to audiobooks.

I usually end up on the computer. Or watching TV.

I am an insomniac so I have my no-sleep routine down to a science pretty much. When I do sleep it is usually when people are awake. But when I can't, I work out. I do a lot of sit ups, I write poetry, I go on here, I work out in other ways, I read school books etc.

It really depends. If I want to try and sleep, I'll put something on TV with the sound on low and try and doze off. If I can't sleep and I'm okay with being up, typically surfing, reading, or trying out a few toys.

Funny, I had the same problem, same time as you.

Oftentimes, it's not that I can't sleep, it's that I don't feel like moving from my chair to my bed. Silly, huh? But sometimes I'll forget how sensitive I am to caffeine and drink pop or coffee or tea in the evening, and I'll be wide awake at 4AM. Times like those, I just give up on sleeping and ride it out. I usually watch my tv shows and anime online. Passes the time

I have a pack of Simply Sleep pills for just that situation. They're over-the-counter sleep aids, made by Tylenol. It's basically just the PM ingredients of Tylenol PM, it's nonaddictive, and it works amazingly. Best part- you STAY asleep. FANTASTIC for getting over jetlag when I was first studying abroad and when I first came home.

How about a 3mg Melatonin pill? It's better than a sleeping pill since it's all natural.

I do the melatonin thing now, or pain relievers. But just that one night, I stayed up, without being zombie-like until around 11am. Then I took a nap. Heh.

Oh, I love the joys of young adulthood!

I use rescue remedy spray before bed time and it shuts off all those thoughts that just won't go away when you're trying to sleep. Most times anyway!

When I was younger and didn't have kids and didn't have work the next day I would just stay up, watch crappy scary movies on tv, talk to my other friends that liked to stay up all night on the phone, and play around on the computer. I sometimes miss those days because there's often a night that I really don't feel like going to sleep but I have to because I need to be up the next morning or the kids will tear the house apart while I sleep.

Since I have chronic insomnia often, I usually masturbate to be able to sleep. It works about 80 percent of the time for me. Otherwise, I get up, get something to drink like hot Chai tea and watch a little boring television until I get sleepy. But I have also been known to be awake for 3 days straight.

Looks like surfing EF is a popular option and I'll chime in on that xD Surf EF and read other people's review blogs. So many pretty things!

That and put on the music. It takes my mind off things that are scaring me from sleeping (if there's anything spooky at the time...such as Doctor Who's Weeping Angels...they pop up in my head at the worst possible times--showers, bed time...)
