What would you do if tech support leaked your nude photos? (Based on a true story)

Contributor: kck kck
I came across this story last night. A woman in the US called Dell Tech Support (which has been outsourced to India) for help with her computer. She was having trouble finding some personal photos on her computer and wanted to locate them so she could delete them (she has a 14 year old daughter in the house and didn't want her to discover the pics). To her horror, she watched as the Dell technician found them and then downloaded them to his computer. He then created a website using the photographs and the woman's real name. He blackmailed her into sending him a brand new Dell laptop; frightened that she was being exposed, she complied in hopes that he would take down the site. Instead, he charged her account to buy +$800 in Dell equipment for another woman in the US with whom he was chatting up. The woman says that she feels completely violated and is thinking about pressing charges. Dell has yet to handle the situation.

I KNOW. It's ridiculous. But it's true! Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself!

So my question to you is... What would YOU do?!

Well I don't have naughty pics but I do have pics that could stir up trouble if found. I don't keep them on my computer though and only an external hard-drive which is not always connected. Plus I wouldn't call tech support, especially one out of the country.

BUT if this DID happen, I would want to kick his ass. I would never comply and I would dare him to do it. I'd gather proof, call my attorney, and file a suit against him as an individual to make sure he's fired and then charged with theft and extortion. And then one against Dell. It wouldn't matter who saw the pics at that point because the more the media knows, the more power I have.

I hope someone seriously kicked his ass though.

I agree! Doesn't seem like he's been fired yet though... And it doesn't look like Dell has handled this situation very well AT ALL.

I feel like doing nasty things to people that do that kinda stuff. In this case it would be worth the trip just to see their face when I walked in! Oh I would bring a Belladonna’s bitch fist with me and take pic's in use.

He hasn't been fired. He's just "no longer handling Dell calls." Source: link

Wow that poor women. What I want to know is how he even got access to her computer. I've seen it done before where tech support at my school has taken over a computer in there library but I'm pretty sure they need passwords to access your account. She clearly trusted the company and they took advantage of her that makes me lose a lot of trust in dell. Especially since there not handling the situation in an appropriate manor.

The articles I read about this situation (one was on ABC) made it sound like this woman was rather naive. Not that the Dell guy wasn't a horrible person for taking advantage of her, but there were a number of times she should have thought, "Hey, this guy is doing something wrong. Maybe I should report him to his superiors." She watched him download the pictures from her computer then sent him money and a laptop afterward.

I would not allow myself to get into this situation. If I had naughty pictures and I shared a computer with people I didn't want to see them, I would have them on an external disk or hard drive and then have them password protected. Anybody else who had them would have to take similar precautions if I'm going to share them. And of course, I'm not going to let some guy in India remotely control any computer with something I don't want him to have access to and then TELL HIM that I have something I don't want him to see on that computer. Nobody deserves to be in this situation, but there were a number of ways this woman could have protected herself that she ignored. The outcome isn't that surprising, unfortunately.

So he's no longer handling Dell calls...just other calls? I hope he's not the DirecTV mofo that keeps calling my house.

Yeah, I agree. It does seem like she's pretty naive when it comes to technology and the "cyber world," as she called it.

But still, if you can't figure something out on the computer, you have no idea how to look for an answer online, and trust talking to people more than you do asking around on the net, then what she did is understandable (albeit, like you said, kinda asking for trouble). You'd also hope that the technician is held to some kind of legal agreement that forbids this kind of behavior. Her trust was definitely misplaced. She panicked, and it led to a pretty dismal situation.

Even naive people don't deserve this to happen to them. We'd all like to think we can trust professionals we ask for help. After all, thousands people call the tech support worldwide and this isn't usually the result.

But I bet she won't be calling them again!

I'm sorry, but the first thing I would do is call my lawyer. Dell, and that asshole, would be paying out of pocket for not only the blackmail, but also the emotional suffering they caused me. If a lawyer told me there was nothing they could do, or that Dell could get the lawsuit dismissed, I'd choose option B. Which would be this: Buy the first plane ticket I could get to India, & go kick his ever lovin' ass!!! Pow! Wham! *Continues making comic book action sounds*

I think there were a lot of times that this woman made the wrong choices. First of all, she watched him download the pictures and didn't do anything right then and there???

And then she sent him a new laptop so he could work on the issue? It seems pretty bizarre and I don't know why she didn't contact someone higher up at Dell once she saw him download them, or once she saw the website.

I dunno, I'd have called either the police or an attorney long before it ever got as far as it did!

The case seems to be that she was more horrified of ANYONE ELSE knowing, so she did what the blackmailer wanted her to do, which is how blackmailing works - they don't work if you reveal All to the world with a 'screw you, I'll get everybody on my side, I'm not embarrassed'. The woman was more embarrassed than righteously indignant like most of us would be.

Anyway, shit like this won't happen if you build your own computer and have a 'no morons allowed' system like Linux.

Wonder how she watched him download the pictures and didn't try to do anything. Sounds like a case where "compensation" or "pain and suffering" might be thrown in the mix. Good luck to her though.

I dunno if I believe the story and I certainly wouldn't pay anything to the jackass. I'd call my attorney at first inkling...and I would never go to someone to work on my comp that I didn't absolutely trust. It's so much easier to be in love with two computer geeks!

Yeah, I'm with you on this. It never would've gotten that far had it been me. Sure, it's disturbing it happened, but the woman could have prevented it.

Remember it's India, where they just recently awarded some piddling little amount for the Bhopal disaster where many were killed or permanently maimed, and that was in the early '80s.

Back on topic - it's a severe breach of ethics on his part to have even looked at the pictures. For computer work you expose yourself to the absolute minimum of personal data necessary and never talk about it.

It seems that she wanted help finding her private pictures? So what if the technician is a crude sort of pervert? It can happen and it did. This is why you need to know a little about your computer. I was surprised a little while ago when my mom couldn't find a picture collection and I found the images in her My Pictures folder. -_-

I am also a little surprised that when the messaging between tech and victim became a little weird, when he started calling her sexy that she didn't complain to Dell then. That would have given me the creeps, a bad feeling about where things could go.

There are various details about this that make me wonder about some things, but, oh, well. I don't want to fill in gaps with unpleasant things, it isn't right. Of course what happened to her is wrong, wrong, wrong. I am disgusted by the actions of the tech. It brings to mind those awful people who post pictures of their girlfriends in retaliation for some petty thing.

I don't know what I would do if I was her. The exposure would hurt me quite a lot in a few ways. I wouldn't make it public, I wouldn't want more exposure. I'd probably be terrified, want to hide. I don't know if I would feel great satisfaction in introducing a layer to Dell, but I would at least want the images of me on the internet removed as quickly as possible, the tech fired.

Lucky me--when I can't fix a problem I am having, I have a significant other who is great with computers and is trustworthy. He has a lot of people going to him before anyone else because he is the type to ignore private images and such.

Always try to get someone you know, someone who has a good character to work on your computer. And look stuff up yourself when you need help--that is what my partner often does! Be careful.

See this is why I don't take naughty pics of myself and put them on my compy. Toy pics, yes, in use pics, no.

Though if that happened to me I would think the guy would be a little unnerved to see pictures of dog and horse cock dildos, haha. If he wanted to use it against me, he can't, i have a blog and all, and people know I like weird crap.

Still, something like that I'd do more than kick his ass.... I'd shove a bat up it... sideways.
