Who currently works as a Web Cam Model?

Contributor: Airekah Airekah
I posted a discussion about what you do for a living and found that there are a few people who work as a web cam model, so I am now wondering how many people here are actually web cam models?

You might get fewer responses because people might be shy about admitting that they were/are cam models; just a thought for next time

As for me, I've never done webcam modeling, just old school in person modeling

I happen to cam part-time on the side, whenever the mood strikes me, as it allows me to express myself in a safe environment. On a positive note, cam models have a lot to share because we learn so much about what turns people on and use lots of toys and such.

I'm certainly happy to advise on general questions (realistic expectations, etc..) but what I refuse to do is solicit people from this board for business purposes. I do it out of respect for this community because it doesn't need to be overrun with spam and advertisements. With the exception of a few members (not very active ones either), I have not noticed many that openly advertise, and that's good. I think like myself, most want to separate business from pleasure. I'm here for pleasure, discussions with like-minded individuals, and of course to score to some stuff! Who isn't?

I've talked to a couple of girls here on the EF forum about it and a friend of mine connected me with a model who does softcore for Cinemax and cams for FOUR sites simultaneously.

No diss to the girls who do it now and enjoy it, but after a bit of light soul searching I decided it wasn't for me.

The money would be so nice and we need it soooo bad but we've been together too long to risk jeopardizing it over increased income. Had it been something I was interested in when we first got together instead of it being a means to an end, it might be a different story.

I have to take a somewhat Buddhist/Zen route and realize I am poor by the richest of standards and I should be freakin' happy that I have food, a home and a man who loves me. The rest of it won't matter when I'm dead anyway.

@Audra, I'm glad you came to a decision you're happy with.

@PassionQT, I see where you're coming from. I do have a link to my cam profile on my profile here, and I guess I never thought of how that could come off as me trying to solicit for more business. In retrospect, I don't see how it could be viewed any other way. -.- I guess I just like my job a bit too much. It's not at all "business" to me. I'm just very open about what I do and who I am, and I wanted the community to understand that about me. If it offends anyone, I'd gladly take down my banner. Let me know, eh!

I've got a questions for those who are cam models. I am always trying to learn new stuff you see, so I am curious on a few things, I hope this is not an offensive question.

My question is, is there an agency or company that takes part of your profits as a fee of some sort? like a cam fee, hosting fee, etc?

Or do you freelance?

Just curious on how that works. Sorry if this is offensive in anyway, just curious.

If they work for a site, the site takes a cut. How much depends on which site.

Hey, not offensive at all! I personally work for a site. Customers buy tokens from the site and then use those tokens to tip me or pay for services. I end up making about 60% of what people spend on me. I like it simply because I don't really have to worry about sales tax. I am no business woman, and I wouldn't even know how to handle all that. I do offer discounted shows via skype which customers pay for through paypal, also. So basically they get a show for cheaper than they'd be paying on the site, but I also get a bit more money. 'Tis a win-win.

Wow sounds great, I hope you get lots of customers. The sales tax would be difficult for me also to calculate, and then all the government papers that you need to run a business.

It sort of reminds me of an artist I know, he works on commissions, but that is all he works on. Keeps him occupied day and night. He does it through paypal.

You never know when asking about someones work or personal life if someone can take offense. I am glad you didn't thanks for the information

I work through a site too. They take a pretty big cut, but they have the most traffic I've seen on any of the sites I've tried. And when all is said and done, I still make a lot more than minimum wage, so I'm not complaining. I've worked some sites that offered 50% commission, but it's not worth it if there's no traffic and no shows.

As far as freelancing, I've certainly been offered to cam off site, but I'm uncomfortable with that and besides, it's against company policy to steer members elsewhere and swap messenger or skype addressses and that would also require that I troll around the internet looking for people who want shows. I really don't have the time nor the desire to set up a personal website. I like to be able to log in when I want, take care of my regulars, then leave it alone.

@Rubenesque
Well it's not all business ..I certainly get pleasure out of some shows, but you know how it goes: Not all the guys give you the time to cum! And many of mine are interested in other fetishes that have nothing to do with me pleasing myself. I wouldn't still be doing it if I didn't enjoy it, perhaps a bit sadistically sometimes. The best things is setting my own hours, not having to work for a week if I don't want to. Obviously the more you are online, the better it is, but I still do well.

I just finished up a conversation with a girl who cames for multiple sites. She makes about $1500 in a day. Works for 11 hours. Her ate is $6 a minute but she started at $3. Has no sex drive outside of what's she doing for the shows. Is constantly insulted regardless of how pretty she is and she said that it takes about six months to build up good base clients. You definitely have to have thick skin to do something like this. She said there is a huge market for couple shows.

Very good point. I am still on a few sites but i am not actively using them right now because my day job is taking over my life. =) Also, i hope i don't see anyone advertising themselves on here. i will be so angry.

The sites usually take a great cut. Most of the time this is for extra protection from models, licensing, assured pay, etc. the sites take care of all of the issues you may have with customers for you and make it to where you only have to deal with the actual performing. however, sometimes it seems a little unfair when you know a customer is being charged $4.99/min and you are making a mere $.60-1.00 of that amount. For most people it really depends on their understanding of the way things work. There are sites that pay by percentage as well and those are typically the best sites to work for.

Freelance work is hard because of regulations and laws. Sometimes you run the risk of getting caught up in a big scary mess. I have known some girls who work for a while on a site and just eventually carry over to their own personal site and carry their regulars with them.

There are male web cam models. Mostly, they appeal to the gay community but I have known a few girls who sit in on cam sessions with guys and also the couple demand is really high in cam modeling. There is not a pay difference on sites where male and female models both work. Couples, however, can charge more because there are two people, but not too much more because they don't want to be too expensive.

In the beginning, it is really hard. If she is currently working and is thinking about trying web cam modeling, all i can tell her is that there are all kinds of guys out there that like different types of girls. the guys can be mean and it can be really hard to sit in front of a webcam and listen to people make rude comments about you, but the pay steadily increases as you build up regulars and a lot of sites work just like regular jobs where when they see you are doing well and making good money at lower rates, they will up your percentage you are being paid by or give you a little more per minute if they offer a flat rate. The first 6 months or so will be hard but if it is something she really wants to do, I say go for it!

Wow. I can't believe someone has had such bad experiences. I consider myself an average looking girl, and I weigh 215, so I'm definitely not the stereotypically ideal weight for a cam girl, but I've honestly only received maybe 3 insults in the three months I've been working. I usually average like $25 an hour, just a sub, which is a lot less than some girls, but I tend to focus on having fun and talking with my regulars as opposed to making money, to be honest. My sex drive certainly wasn't damaged, either. There definitely is a huge demand four couple shows. I get guys asking for it ALL the time. Again, I'm pretty shocked you found someone who has had such bad experiences, Audra! I'm sad for her, though she makes some pretty decent dough.

I have had a few guys get SUPER offended when they found out I went on a date or something. Or if I didn't get online exactly when I said I would. Some of them get super attached and stuff. >_<

It is indeed a paying job. How it works varies from site to site. On my site, I have my own chatroom where I sit on my cam kind of playing around, but keeping it all rather PG-13. People can tip me just for fun or if they want to see something specific. They can take me into private shows where they are charged a specific rate per minute to see me perform more rated R type things. I think on most sites, people mostly just get paid for the private shows.

I've never taken part in a web cam session from either side, so I've been wondering...Is there audio involved in either direction? Does the web cam model just see text typed in a window from the watchers?
