Will you modify a piece of lingerie to make it fit?

Contributor: ToyTimeTim ToyTimeTim
So many great looking pieces of lingerie are "one size fits most". Well for the wife she usually does not fit (hehe) in that category. So I fire up my sewing machine and 'fix' it. Yes I said my sewing machine, my wife can do needle and thread but that's it, I on the other hand have been sewing (mostly upholstery and leather) for 25 years.

Sew if you see something that may be to small or not fit right will you buy it anyway with the intention to modify as needed.

I would, I don't sew well, but I do sew, but I am the kind of person to do something like this!

Never to late to learn, I started with the basic needle and thread.

I would, indeed. I would also modify lingery to make it more..cute. Like add bows and lace to it.

Good thought.

I have made some fringe for a short short leather vest that the wife wears over her lingerie top.

I would modify lingerie, or other things, to be a bit cuter if the lingerie is not already cute itself. I will not, however, modify lingerie to fit better. I like a bit of motivation to get smaller if the lingerie I happen to purchase is a tad too small

That is really a good way to look at it.

If I had the time and the knowledge of how to do it, I definitely would! Unfortunately I'm Sewing challenged lol. I am afraid to pay a lot or even a decent amount of money for something to potentially screw it up and make it useless. Maybe one day when I'm confident in my capabilities

Yup, and I have. I did costuming back in the day. I actually don't have a sewing machine right now, though, so I'm limited to modifications that I can do by hand.

Most lingerie is so delicate anyhow, I'd be afraid to ruin it without the proper machinery. I tried to alter a costume once and it was a disaster.

Ya sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

I am somewhat blessed with a machine that will sew silk and also will go through heavier materials like leather or canvas.

In theory, YES! I am not afraid to take a seam ripper to a tag or a cutesy bow that I don't like.

In practice, I never get around to it. I bought a couple of really cute Mary Green silk bras on clearance a few months ago, and it was obvious that they would look fabulous if I just took an inch off in the middle to make the cups closer together. I took out my seam ripper and disassembled one bra, but then realized that I didn't have the right color thread to sew it back together with. So the bra is dangling from a hanger, waiting for me to take it to the sewing store so I can match the color. One of these days, I will fix it.

I don't have a sewing machine or a whole lot of skill, but I can and do repair holes or small problems (after the project sits in a pile for months and months).

More than likely. I'm pretty okay with modifying clothes and such, or fixing the torn ones, and I make my own Halloween costumes, so why not?

No. I can barely thread a needle, much less alter anything.

I would be willing to customize it if I got something that didn't fit, but I try to just buy things that I think will fit.

Have to do it all the time anyway, so it's a given. (I didn't have the heart to tell an actress in a production I was doing costumes for that her evening gown had once started out as one of my baby dolls ... the pink satin looked more lovely on her teeny frame, anyway.)

Yes, I've modified the clasps on garter belts, and replaced cheap plastic clasps with good metal ones. I will take something in if it doesn't fit properly, or shorten something if it's too big. (I'm a really tiny woman, short, but I have big boobs and a big butt, so "small" doesn't fit me anywhere but the length.)

I have also put new straps on negligees and camis, as sometimes the plastic adjusting thingies break. I hate that. I will go through my stuff every few months and replace any broken or torn things, or replace the safety pins I put in "just until I get to this."

Maybe not if it's going to be too small, but if it were easy enough to do I'd probably do it

I'm not very good at sewing but I have done a bit of modifying. And there was one outfit I really loved that needed to be changed. Fortunately my mom is a seamstress, so I asked her to do it.

Matter of fact, I intend to look for black satin ribbon or elastic when M and I pop into Walmart tomorrow to put on the corset I just bought. It fits perfect, but the cups are a little too weak to hold my boobs up.

My mom would flip if I brought her lingerie to fix. One she brings her things to me to fix, and two she is the old school type that thinks that sex is only for making babies.

Wally world and Joann fabrics are some of my favorite stores, the lady's at Joann think it's great that I can sew and I can answer questions about fixing their machines. The older gentleman at Wally World and I can talk shop for hours.

I am glad that so many of you will at least try to fix things yourself, really saves money.

Took me two years to save up for mine, wasn't cheap but so worth it.

Hooray for men that sew! And men that are not in general afraid of "domestic" tasks! And yes, I'd certainly modify it within reason. Sometimes things are so poorly made that it's not worth saving.

Thank you, I have made and saved so much money. In my house I do a lot of the "domestic" tasks, even Halloween costumes for the kid's.
