Windows 8.....Rants, raves & who cares.

Contributor: js250 js250
I had to buy a new computer last week and the new program is Windows 8. No problem, I thought, Windows is usually pretty easy to learn. Think again!!! Not only have I spent hours trying to find programs, set settings, getting movies to play and much more...my brain is getting warped by it's quirks!!

So--tips, tricks, opinions anyone? Please tell me it is not just me!!

This is a smart assed answer, but the best advice I've been able to give anyone is to take it to a reputable tech person and get them to install Windows 7.

I played with 8 a little, and it seemed very oddly designed for anything but touchscreen.

I been using it since February I have found and know how to use everything within 3 days of getting it. The only issue I have with it is when it crashes sometimes you can't do a restore to a certain point and you have to restore it back to factory date. I have restored back to factory 6 times already and it really does suck so I would advice to have a usb flash drive handy and don't put too much stuff on your laptop.

I made the switch to Windows 8 in December, and it took a bit of getting used to...and now, for the most part, I love it. I miss having a start menu, however. That's my one wishlist item for Windows 8, and apparently there has been enough complaints/requests that Microsoft may be releasing a second version of Windows 8 that will have the start menu.

I've had it for awhile. I have been using Windows all my life, but I still have to use Google to find out how to use half the features.

I think it looks terrible. I prefer the classic Windows format that is still present in Vista so I'll stick with it.

8 sucks, but you're a bit screwed if you have a tablet/touchscreen pc since 7 doesn't have the touch screen support like 8.

I'm waiting for them to fix the bugs. Windows alternates between crappy OSs and decent ones. Since 8 sucked, the next one should be better.

I'm sure when I finally get new laptop it will probably be windows 8, but I'm not looking forward to it.

I wish I could help you out, but I purposely bought a laptop without windows 8 (my options were limited) because I can't stand it. I hate the switch from 7 to 8.

Windows releases are like the original Star Trek movies: every other one sucked.
XP was great
Vista blew
7 is pretty good
8 isn't.

Best of luck with the learning curve. There's a lot of third-party software that provides you with the start menu, which is one of the biggest complaint I've heard. The other thing to keep in mind is that there is a windows Blue release (which a decent number of tech sites suspect is a service pack) coming that should hopefully fix some of the major complaints people have with 8

I haven't tried Windows 8 yet, but I am afraid I will have to soon...

My current laptop runs windows 7, but it is starting to encounter all sorts of issues... I'm delaying upgrading for as long as I can because windows 8 just looks terrible (and I don't want a chromebook or a mac).

I haven't tried it yet, but I am technologically challenged so I would probably hate it.

So far I have not found anyone who is willing to say anything positive. I will be keeping my distance for as long as possible.

It's better than XP, in some ways, if that helps... Yeah, it's pretty bad.

My number one tip is that unless you have a touch screen and thus need it for that, check and see if you have Windows 8 Pro. If so, you've got downgrade rights and it would be pretty easy to switch your OS to Windows 7. If you don't have Pro or don't have a 7 disk laying around, then my best advice is to do a search for any specific irritations that you are having. One of my favorite expressions when people come to me as the techie friend is that I probably don't know the answer, I'm just really good at Googling, and I find that unless I'm the only one with a specific problem (and knowing the number of people who hate Window's 8, I can safely say that you're not), it's generally quicker than waiting for people to answer your questions.

I'm holding onto my 7 Pro install for as long as possible. I refuse to "upgrade" to Windows 8. I have Linux installed on my netbook entirely (no Windows at all) and plan on switching the desktop to Linux completely once it becomes a viable alternative as a gaming platform, which is the only reason I have Windows at all anymore.

Windows 8's interface manages to be both insultingly simplistic and frustratingly unintuitive. Microsoft monitors and gets reports of every piece of software you install and uninstall on 8. It's designed with touchscreens in mind, so a traditional desktop with mouse and keyboard setup like mine feels almost like an afterthought. Overall, I wouldn't "upgrade" even if it was free of charge. I'm waiting for the day us users and the software/hardware companies break free of their abusive relationship with Microsoft...

Agree. Vista sucked.. 7 is decent. They make it harder to find files every year.

Now, I'm curious... is there a way to make it so that there's a "start" button/menu with Windows 8? I saw a few comments on another page, saying that you *can* make Windows 8 look just like Windows 7, but I'm not sure how true that is...

If I can at least have a start button/menu like I do now, then I'm not so opposed to switching.

Whew! That's a relief. This laptop has been driving me crazy lately (the screen randomly flash lines, loses battery power even when it's plugged in charging, and only gets about 30 minutes max of battery life when it's not plugged in), but I have been putting off replacing it due to how much of a pain Windows 8 looks like.

But... since I can have a start menu, I'll be able to deal with it.

I was not excited to get it when my computer broke and I had to buy another, but I really don't think it's THAT bad. It definitely has a learning curve, but just Google anything you're not sure of and the answer is out there. It does have some weird touchscreen features that are impractical if you don't have a touchscreen, but it's not that bad...

I am now having some issues with settings not being saved when I turn off the computer. When it comes back on all my privacy filters, proxy, etc. changes I have saved are back to the factory setting...AAARRRGGHHHH H!!!! I need these since I sell on ebay and ebay/paypal has a habit of tracking and 'stalking' your internet usage and sites you visit--as well as gathering info about you that you would rather they did not know!!!
