Word and phrase meanings and connotations

Some phrases or words might have the same literal meaning but get interpreted differently.
To me, for example, "intercourse" usually makes me think of the limited definition, PIV sex, even though the Webster definition is "physical sexual contact between individuals that involves the genitalia of at least one person". Or possible alternatives, as in anal intercourse. But it usually feels a bit exclusive to me, since i'm a lesbian. It also feels a little sterile and not very sexy.
When differentiating from masturbation, which phrase do you prefer and which phrase do you feel is the most general and inclusive (that it allows for any combination of people, genders, sexual acts)? Intercourse, sex, partner sex, sex with a partner, play, another phrase? Which do you find limiting or unappealing?
What are some other examples like this of language pertaining to sexuality where some choices can be limiting and exclusive because of connotations? What are some inclusive phrases and language that you like or prefer?
