Words You Always Have to Look Up

Contributor: ~LaUr3n~ ~LaUr3n~
I always have to look up the word definitely!

I noticed that my students were consistently spelling it wrong too or using the word difiantly instead (btw this means to resist against, not confirmation).

So I came up with a way that has helped me remember the word.

"DEAF IN ITALY" It is the only thing worse than having no tastebuds in Italy!

Remember there are no A's no take out the first one and replace the second with an e...

May sound stupid but I have not spelled it wrong since.

What words do you always have to look up when writing reviews and how do you remember to spell them right?

No word for me, honestly...it's random, really, when I need to look things up. I know how to spell most words..

'Definitely' came with time, so did 'embarrassment.' Honestly, in my mind, I just sound it out as it looks. 'Comfortable' came with time too, now it's automatic.

Convenient. It gets me every single time.

I forget sometimes which "discreet" we use with sex toys.

Discrete - math word
Discreet - blends into the background, doesn't stick out

I don't have a problem too often (it's usually the words that end in 'dant' and 'dent' that get me), but I grind my teeth every time I see 'except' when they MEAN 'accept' (usually by businesses!). I've also noticed the alarming trend of misspelled words being accepted to the point of legitimacy in the public consciousness.

I know English is a living language that's evolving, but it's not supposed to devolve.

I always forget that extra R in "embarrassment," so it's always "embarassment".

Same for "prerogative," since the first R isn't pronounced (by me, anyway), I drop it accidentally.

I've usually been a fairly good speller, so not too many issues otherwise.

Pet peeve: when people use "thru" instead of "through," but that's totally just me.

To be honest there are to many to list. If it was not for spell check I would be lost. Been this way since elementary school.

I have some weird ones that are bad habits from the days that I didn't know better. Like "a lot" I used to think was "alot" and I know it's not but it's hard for me to remember when typing. Same with "in case" I always think of it as "incase" and then "noone" instead of what should be "no one" ..There's another one like this that I just can't think of at the moment.

I'm sure there are many others that I commonly spell wrong and don't notice until spell check underlines it in red.

I think my biggest pet peeve is seeing "defiantly" instead of "definitely" because it doesn't even sound like it should be spelled "defiantly". I guess it's an ok pet peeve to have though because I giggle when I read how people "defiantly" think things LOL or when a toy or something is "defiantly" a certain way..as if it's a bad ass rebel!

I've seen a couple reviews mention a toy as being "defiantly discrete" and I want to yell at them.

I'm an English teacher. I read somewhere that the "defiantly" instead of "definitely" error is now the most common spelling error in student work. It comes from a certain company's word processor that makes that substitution when definitely is misspelled. It helps somewhat to remember that "definitely" contains the word "finite" in it.

My list is far too long - necessary, cinnamon, truly (I'm always spelling it truely) ...definitely is ...definitely on my list.

like they've never heard of the word "defiant".

Some people also forget the last "e" in "different".

Necessary... or is that neccessary? Or maybe neccesary? Thank Microsoft for word processors that have spell check. LOL!

I'm very glad for the spell check in firefox or else I'd make a lot of typos, but I find the words that drive me most bonkers are simple ones. Like, I'll look at a word I know for a fact is spelled correctly, and the word just looks like it's spelled wrong to me. I'll look it up just to make sure, but it still looks incorrect to me

Shit, this makes me wonder if I have been using the wrong one again. I forgot to make the conscious effort to use double ee's. Crap bag!

The other one is "awhile." Grammatically, it should be "a while," but I'm even guilty of doing the "awhile" thing.

There are a bunch for me. Definitely is one of them, Separate (Seperate), Weird, Anniversary, the list could go on! The strange thing about it is I am very good at spelling many words and people often ask me how to spell when they are here. I suppose the difference is that I know how to spell these words, but in typing I always spell it wrong the first time.

I don't know if there is just one! I'm the same with definitely, but it's usually because my fingers get away from me when I type it out.
