Would you use Facebook's "Places" to show your location?

Contributor: PassionQT PassionQT
For anyone that doesn't know what this is,Facebook now uses your phone's GPS to let you "check in" to a nearby establishment and broadcast your location to your friends. It also allows your friends to tag you, even if you aren't in the location they selected (pretty messed up, eh?). Can you imagine the repercussions of this?

FYI: My newspaper said : 'If you wish to disable your friends' ability to tag you , go to your FB account, privacy settings and in the area under "sharing on Facebook", click "customize settings" and disable the setting that lets friends check in on your behalf'. However, it's not laid out quite like that: I had to click on the drop down next to "places I check in to", click "customize" then I chose visible to "only me". I guess that's how to hide it from everyone.

So, will you be using "places" and "checking in"?

This doesn't really apply to me because I don't use my phone to access FB - I have no data plan, but since my company pays for my cell phone so I can't complain If I did have a BB or Droid where I could update it from, I'd disable this feature though. I don't mind most people knowing where I am, but there are some I'd rather not be able to track me down if they wanted to.

That is crazy! I won't be using it!

Heck no! This application creeps me out. I really don't need to broadcast to the world where I am and when. It's like stalking made easy!

I'm not familiar with the app. I don't use FB often, but I don't use my phone to access it.

I also really hate the whole "everybody wants and needs to know where I am and what I am doing every second of the day" stuff.

One of our greatest Freedoms is our freedom from constant surveillance.

I don't even have an Ipass for the tollway, because of the fear it may have a GPS in it. IMO, it's only someone's business to know where I am IF I tell them, individually.

Passion, is this something I have to go into my FB account and deal with? Or does it only work if you access FB with your phone?

I am so confused about this stuff. I only joined FB to find some old friends, not to let everybody everywhere know where I am or what I am doing all the time.

I also think things like this can be and ARE abused by the Government. So screw them.

Mine would be pretty boring:

"I am at home"
"I am still at home"
"I went to the main office, which is right across the way from my apartment"
"The Moon...nah, I'm really still at home"

I prefer to stick with the theory that anyone can be found at any time, it's just a matter of not making yourself stand out so people look for you.

Penn and Teller covered this on Bullshit (great show!)

I hardly use FB either and don't see the need to let everyone know what I'm doing five times a day or where I am. I don't tweet either.

I'm mostly concerned about the stalker aspect too and will be curious to see what comes out of this new application.

Yeah, mine too. I'm at home 90% of every day.

Facebook has really become such a pile of arse. But no, I anybody who needs to know where I am has already been told.

I didn't know about it but I went and changed my privacy settings right after reading this.

at this rate you have to check your privacy settings everyday, because they reset a lot of them with updates, when they rolled out their latest policy change it unlocked all of my pictures and updates. what I don't understand is why other people care where other people might are?

I didn't even realize I had to change that, I hate that you have to opt out of things on facebook, and I was much happier when you couldn't see my profile picture unless you were my friend. Then all of a sudden it was visible to other people.

But no, I wouldn't use this, and I wouldn't feel comfortable letting people 'tag' me in anything like it either.

I don't use a phone to access Facebook Places, but apparently your friends can still tag you if you're with them, so I disabled that function along with setting it so that only I knew where I was at any one time. Honestly, I don't like this new part of FB at all.

Weren't we told to not advertise/post where we were going so thieves wouldn't break into our houses while we were out?

Sounds like Facebook is in cahoots with the burglars.

As soon as I heard about this I went in and disabled it. I don't think it's a good idea at all to be broadcasting location.

I'm paranoid. I don't put any real information on FB anyway, and I turned all those settings and crap off.

I use it when we're out on bike rides - mostly cuz we have so many friends who ride and who follow us on facebook, and it leads to meeting up, which is cool.

However...

I never do it from home or from somewhere I'm alone. And I don't allow friends to check me in.

I would maybe cause I'd like someone to hang out with me or something.. but I also don't use Facebook on my phone. I see a few of my friends do it, and it's like.. Oh... nifty.. and I go about my day. My friends are also supertight about their privacy though..

*BUMP*

Just got the laugh of the week this morning - Mulder (my FWB who dumped me several months ago) is using FB Places (yeah, he dumped me but didn't unfriend me at FB, go fig). So, anyway, he's been listing where he has been since yesterday, and finally his estranged wife (the bipolar one he had separated from three years ago) posted "Now I know EXACTLY where you are, fucker!"

Y'know ... I'm kinda glad he dumped me. That situation was just insane and I didn't need to be part of it, and I'm glad I'm not now. It was like a Lifetime movie special, only written by Amy Fisher and on a low budget.

Frankly I think it's rather silly and careless - it just encourages criminal activity, stalking etc. It really worries me if kids are using this.

I had a friend who wrote everything she did and places she was planning on going all the time. I told her to stop, for security reasons. I was afraid something would happen to her.
