Does Teen Mom send a bad message?

I dunno. I think modern culture itself lends itself to teen pregnancies.

Agreeing with the above, but I also don't really care for the show and think it's trash just like most of today's TV

Yes and no. I don't think it's much worse than other media dealing with teen pregnancy (Such as movies like Juno.). If a teen is dumb enough to watch Teen Mom and think they should follow that path, then they were probably not going to turn out well anyway.

I think it glamourizes teen pregnancy without showing all the pitfalls of the situation.
02/16/2012
I think they it seems like it's trying to make teen pregnancy seem like a negative thing but it's really really not doing a very good job of it at all.

My cousin is dumb and thought she would be like the girls on this show and got pregnant thinking she would get a show too.

Besides THIS, I can't think of any reason you would think it would be "okay" to get pregnant. These moms and their partners and families are struggling, often suffering if not completely because of the pregnancy/children then at least partially because of it. there's not a single person I've seen on that show -- although, I've only seen a few episodes -- who has a life I'd want to live.

The tears, the tension, the uncertainty, the drama...if anyone can look at that and say "I wanna be just like that", then they probably were going to end up in a similar position with or without the show.
If parents were smart and/or simply proactive, they would be sitting there with their children discussing what they're watching. If you want to keep a kid from doing something, answer every single question they are brave enough to ask you when it comes to sex and relationships. Says the woman with no children...ha!
But anyway, I feel like if I had a show like Teen Mom when I was a teenager, things might have played out a little bit differently for me.

Teen Mom doesn't make getting pregnant seem appealing to me at all! I don't think it glamourizes the situation, the girls have nothing but drama and problems.

I can't help but think that if someone can be convinced to get pregnant by a TV show, they end up getting pregnant early anyway. perhaps they'll be told that aspirin between the legs will prevent them from getting pregnant and will believe it.

If parents aren't doing a good job, then yes. It sends a terrible message and kids will pick up on that. If parents do a good job of raising their kids then it won't matter how many TV shows pregnant teens get, they'll realize how difficult being a young mom is and think of that when making decisions.
02/20/2012
I've never seen the show, but I think it could potentially glorify or romanticize teen pregnancy.
03/04/2012
Teen pregnancy is an issue that is from lack of intelligence on safety, immaturity on teenagers parts, and a rage of hormones. They need to have shows that educate the importance of using condoms. They shouldn't have glorified teen moms on magazines and on TV like they do, so it does show them in the wrong way, but a similar show could be beneficial.

I just can't see it as being a good idea. I can understand if you don't have preventatives available, but they're so easy to get in the modern age (at least condoms), that it's hard to justify people who chose to risk pregnancy without a long term plan to deal with the children.

I think it does generally

I think he shows actually shows the bad of having a kid at there age. Those girls dont seem happy or to be doing well.

Yes those girls are idiots, and I think that it's an awful show. But maybe showing their crappy lives might be a deterrent from getting pregnant

I too think it's a demonstration how idiotic some people are.

I haven't watched it in a while, but in the episodes I've seen most of the moms are constantly miserable, so if anything I think it's a deterrent to pregnancy.

I was a teen mom and my two daughters are not. In fact they are both virgins still. One is 18 and will be 19 in October. The other just turned 17 back in March. I truely believe it is how you raise your children on weather or not they end up pregnant as a teen. The only reason I ended up pregnant as a teen was because I was date raped. Of course I kept my daughter and she is one of the best things to have ever happened to me.

The show 16 and pregnant is the same way. Moral corruption.

I haven't seen it but I have seen other shows that glorify teen romances, sex and pregnancy. That isn't necessarily the best thing to do. Kids can be easily influenced by what they see celebrities doing.
However, I feel the show is irrelevant if parents/school teachers explain the necessity of safe sex to teens and the difficulties that come with having a baby. Lots of stuff happens on TV that kids know is unacceptable or dangerous. For example, just because teens watch a bank heist on TV does not mean they think robbing banks is acceptable. Somewhere down the line, hopefully, someone told those kids that robbing banks is stupid. So is having unprotected sex.

I put it in the same league as shows about hoarding or addictions; it's neither good nor bad in terms of the message it puts out but it's pretty obvious the only goal the show has in mind is to get ratings.

No logical person is going to look at Teen Mom and think "Wow, that sounds like fun!"

I say maybe because the show shows the bad and the good. Also you stupid for wanting a baby as a teenager.

I don't think it sends a bad message at all but that's just me.
