Ah, Lady Gaga...when she first arrived on the music scene, I was oddly hipster about her, and hating her because EVERYONE was playing Poker Face. But then I actually listened to her music and became a huge fan.
I don't know about a sex icon, but I would say that she's one of the few musical personalities I see with real, actual staying power in the pop scene. She has the ability to create unique songs that actually manage to sound different than each other. I'll agree that her lyrics aren't exactly earth-shattering in their depth, but they do make for some pretty catchy songs.
I think that her real power is in reaching out to her fans--I've found that she's great at communicating with her fans, which I feel is part of her great celebrity appeal. Everyone likes a famous person that they feel they can actually connect with.

I don't care for her at all and I've been stunned at all of the attention she's getting from the greats like Elton John (she's his kid's godmother). I mean of all of the people in his life that he knows and that's who he picks?
I just don't understand her appeal at all. Talent is in the eye of the beholder and there are so many artists who are squashed under her notoriety. I hope she fades and it kind of thrilled me when her album plummeted off the charts after she gave away some of the singles online for free.

I think she's great! Some of her work is... a bit weird, even for me, but I still really love what she does.

She used to rub me the wrong way, now I don't mind her as an artist. I respect her talent and strength of character, though I'm not really a fan of hers, her work or her style.

I respect her for the stuff she's done for the LGBT community so I don't dislike her as a person but I am not at all a fan of her music. Her music is very catchy but the instrumental and lyrical construction of her songs is really simple and not inspiring at all. Its catchy but from a musical standpoint there really isn't much there, it sounds like a lot of music I've all heard before and I don't find it creative or interesting at all.

I think she's a genuinely talented singer/performer, who got famous by having piles of ambition and marketing savvy (she basically clawed her way into an industry that wanted to reject her for being too weird-looking, despite being more vocally talented than a *lot* of current pop stars).
"Bad Romance" + Fame Monster were weird enough that I respected her as an artist. She had a bizarre gender presentation and was sincere in her LGBT activism. But since then, she's been going back to the same well, not really creating things that are new or shocking. The lyrics on "Born this way" (the album) were lazy. She's become the type of performer who believes their own hype, who believes that everything that comes out of their mouth must be amazing and fantastic just because they said it. I hope she takes some time and discovers some new influences and creates something really rad from them.
