I like massages WITH oil because it makes the skin more malleable and thee is no drag of hands against skin. my husband doesn't like the feel of oil on his own hands though, and calls it "greasy".

I definitely prefer oil because it makes a massage "smoother" (and more fun). But if it's just a quick rub the oil might be more hassle than it's worth.
Also some oils are scented which improves the atmosphere for a good massage

Oily massages are heavenly. And generally last longer, too, since we bothered to get out the oils and use them. Investing product in the session makes one invest more time as well, usually

MMMM. Massages. I love both giving and receiving massages. Our favorite is the JimmyJane Afterglow Massage Candle. Second would be lightly scented natural oil.
I'm receiving the Good Clean Love massage oil, (Origins aroma) in the mail from Eden tomorrow or the next day, so we'll see how that works. We're both excited about it.

Oil is great for massages, it makes it nice and slick and the pressure seems to come smoother. I hate messes, but I'll just hop in the shower after!
