Without making partner feel like they've done something wrong or aren't good enough anymore? I've tried my best to just assure them that it'd just be fun if we started using stuff together and I still love sex without toys, but he feels like I'm bored of our sex.

It is not about boredom, its about bringing new aspects to your sexlife. new feelings, new intimacy. If you talk about it, directly, not beating around the bush, it should help. Explain to him it is just a way to further improve the fun you already have
