Maybe it's because of your environment or just because people seem to take Poly relationships to a very bad note but are/were you afraid to come out?

While we don't actively advertise our relationship status we are not exactly hiding either. I fear only small minded people who will seek to hurt people who don't agree with their narrow view of acceptable.

Personally I push through the fear but I was and am often afraid to. That said, almost every negative reaction has been turned around. I guess I live by example. Once I emphasize that everyone involved is aware and totally fine with it (and usually point out how there are things people are into that I'm not and I don't make it my job to care) people generally see that I'm happy, whichever love(s) are with me at the time are happy, and leave it at that. I don't go out of my way to bring it up unless I'm becoming friends with someone. No point in explaining it to my grocery bagger, right?

I have no problem telling anyone anything really. It's just that I can't tell certain people certain things because I know they can't handle the truth.
