Would you review a product that you did not own? 2 Part Question

Contributor: Sir Sir
I just received the most odd question and wanted to know an opinion from everyone else on this.

Would you review a product that you did not own and did not use? By all means, discuss this below. I am quite disturbed at the moment, to be fully honest.

This is a two-part question - first, if you would. Second, if you have or have not, and if you would or would not in the future. The second part may be more personal, so you do not have to answer if you do not want to.

I wouldn't do this, I feel like it would defeat the purpose of the program. By giving a fake review, you are giving others a false opinion/information about a product they might want.

Agreed.

I'm still so shocked to even be asked such a thing. It's the ultimate offense.

You were asked this personally? That's strange.

I wouldn't review an item I don't own because, well 1...it's unethical, but 2. chances are others have the item. You could be called out on things. I don't think it would be easy to do. If you did it somehow, it wouldn't be easy to get away with because of what I said earlier.

Yeah, I was asked this:

"How can I review a product that I don't own?"

I was like, "WHAT?! You can't do that!"

@Sir: I don't blame you for being offended. WTH? I would never even CONSIDER the possibility of reviewing something I don't own, let alone actually do it.

Someone actually asked you if you owned a toy that you reviewed?

That's just wrong...and foolish. I don't have a problem for reviews of similar products...but those similar products have to be damn near the likeness of the item being reviewed.

I think a lot of people are writing false reviews these days for the wrong reasons :/

No, they didn't ask me if I personally did this. They asked me how they COULD do this, after asking me how to review a product. I told them about the grabbing and all of that, and then they dropped that little number on me.

I agree. Honest mistake is one thing, you know? It happens. But purposeful, no, that's not nice.

Wow, I have never done this nor would I ever. People are spending their money and wanting to get their money's worth whether it's a $5 or a $150 product. Not to mention a lot of us work hard on our real reviews.

NO WAY!! That defeats the purpose of having the review program in the first place. The whole point is to have reviews from people who actually have experience using the toy. I'm disappointed that someone asked you to do that. I haven't ever done it, and I will never do it in the future! Dopey people!

No I have never reviewed a product I do not own nor have I reviewed a product I have not used thoroughly enough to be sure that I can give an honest and well thought out review of. I have given a review based on the imput of Sigel who tests the male toys out for me but if there's a way I can use the toy I use it as well for comparison's sake. Besides I think that if a toy has more than one use then the uses should be explored for the sake of consumers who wanna know!

There have been some reviews that I have wondered if the person actually owns the toy based on the very thing Lauren said. Still I do my best and try not to worry about cheaters...cause I'd pinch their heads off if I could.

Sir,
Is it possible that the person was actually just trying to find out how to get started in the review program, so they could get the freebies for review on products that they did not own?

Did you seek clarification from them? It could be that they just asked the question awkwardly.

Please say it was just a misunderstanding.

I agree and hope this was a misunderstanding of the review program since you can't review a product that you don't actually own. Maybe they thought they were being asked to write a review for a product they didn't own, rather than one they already owned or from a push assignment? Just trying to rationalize an explanation without knowing all the facts.

I think it's kind of a jack ass thing to do. People are reading reviews for information on a product they could potentially spend a lot of money on. If you don't own the product, you don't REALLY know what it's like. Plus, what's the point of doing that anyways? I don't get it.

I would not be able to consider it, that goes against everything that is right.
Makes me think of that bumper sticker "What, are you stuck on stupid?"

Damn, some people.

It makes no sense to me at all to review products that you haven't tried. I don't get it! I haven't reviewed a product that I tried but didn't own as I felt, I would need more experience with it.
I guess, out of interest, what motivated the question?
Some reviews do leave me wondering, but I believe it is the narrative rather then not using the product.
And OMG, who has time for a ruse anyway???

yes. i am also wondering this. you should ask

I haven't and would never..but I've seen other reviewers do it (or I assume since the item is nothing like they describe AT ALL) so it doesn't surprise me really that someone would but it does shock me that someone would ask, as if they think it's ok. How could anyone even imagine that was something ok to do?? Just craziness..

I'm appalled also, I too, have read a few reviews that looked as though it was possible the reviewer wasn't familiar with the toy and just described it the way the overview did. This is rare, I think. But, the fact that Sir was even asked tells us this problem is alive and well.

I feel guilty if I haven't used the toy within a day of getting it, because I know those reviews have to be thoroughly researched before they are written. I want to get as much use of the toy before I even write a word, I think MOST of us do this the same way.

Eden is very generous with us, and I'd hate to see that generosity taken advantage of.

Yet an other reason why I ask specific questions on people's reviews when they are applying for Advanced Reviewer after only a few mediocre reviews. I want to make sure they KNOW the toy enough to write about it.

I never have, and would never do it. Its not ethical.

I do not review products I do not own and have not used.

If by some odd chance I did use a product that someone else owned enough to feel competent to review it that would be OK. I don't see that happening for me, but it could happen for someone else.

If someone asks me for my opinion on a product that I do not own/have not used I'll give it my best shot but let them know that it's just speculation based on other experiences.

I would never review a product I haven't used. And any decent contributor wouldn't for ethical reasons. And I'm sure any of those people don't stick around longterm on this site to begin with.

But I would consider reviewing a product I didn't own as long as I did actually use it. But the problem with that scenario is that I couldn't imagine borrowing someone else's toys... But ya know never what a future partner might bring to the game.

I don't think I ever could do this. I HAVE to know how this product preforms in order to write a decent review. That's just stupid to write one that you have never used!

No No No...that's just...wrong. I have never, nor would I.

Hopefully they didn't mean what they said, and meant it in a different way. I do know that some people don't clarify themselves well and can cause misunderstanding.

Ive reviewed a product that I didn't buy directly from EF but it's the identical toy. So I didn't see a problem with that since it is the same toy and it helps (hopefully) EF make a sale. maybe I'm wrong?

It is bad to say but I am having a hard enough time writing a review for a toy that I DO own! I mean there is so much that you need to cover that it would be 100% noticeable to many if you tried to do one on something that you have not used or do not own! It is hard to believe that people will still lie like that for rewards. I mean I am assuming that this person wants to do it for that reason.

Well, at least this confirms the suspicions many of us have had about bogus reviews coming in lately. I guess it was good that you were asked, at least this person now knows that it's really not acceptable. But yeah, definitely suggests that what we've suspected about fake reviews it probably true in at least some cases. Guess that goes with all the good stuff that comes with an expanding community, though.
