Plugs or a really small dildo would be good to start with. I've never had much luck with the prostate massagers, vibrating or not.

I don't see why not, doesn't sound like you're against it. Get a silicone plug around 1.25" in diameter, and give it a try. Please remember to warmup with fingers and lots of lube first!
