Not needed. Just have a good bowel movement before you try it, and a shower beforehand is never a bad idea either.

All of my anal play is solo and I do it just because I'm a clean freak and don't want any surprises.
I don't use a large volume of water at all. I bought a small fleet enema at the drug store (2 pack), dumped out the solution and just use warm water in one of the bottles, sometimes 2 if necessary but I do them one at a time. It's just enough water to clean things out but not enough to give me cramps or make me uncomfortable. I don't enjoy it but it's really not that big a deal. I felt weird about it at first, though.

I like to do it, even though we've had spontaneous anal before...if I haven't, um, gone to the bathroom yet though, I usually guide him to something else, and he understands. It's just this unspoken thing between us, because I don't want any mishaps...however if they do happen (and they've only happened to me once, and it wasn't that bad), you and your partner, if you guys are comfortable with each other and mature, it's not that big of a deal. In general though, as long as you have a bowel movement, take a shower and get clean down there, take things slowly and gently, it's a lot of fun. I love anal, and it does feel great if you relax and go with it. Usually I clean myself out with a dental syringe, like the kind they give you to shoot water into where your wisdom teeth used to be, and that seems to work just fine. I've considered getting the universal tube cleanser and they have available here and Eden. It's cheaper seems to get the job done, according to the reviews. But my little dental syringe works great, so I'll probably just stick with that.

In our opinion the very best and most convenient solution is a washlet toilet seat. I received one as a gift last year. She purchased it at Costco on the cheap. We love it. Always fresh. Always clean. Always ready to play.

We have thus done decades of anal play (my hubbies penis, toys and fingers in me, my fingers and toys into him) and never had a single incident of "soiling". Not once, not ever. Oh..and we never, ever douche or use enemas.
Now, having said that, we have played with some enema play and have played with douche toys, and in a prior couple relationships, hubby had girls who were seriously into enema play, but I will say that every time we put water in, down there, it stimulates the bowel and increases discomfort and makes it more likely, in our opinion, of soiling. Sorry...just our experience over well over 30 years each of anal play.

Neither of us douches. We just wash well. Relax and start SLOW...build up to larger...but yea, we don't douche. Mrs Scotch says it would take the spontaneity out. Mr Scotch says our exploits are not usually planned, sometimes we go "there" and sometimes we don't. You never know so keep it clean and then you can just go with what feels good.

We've had anal sex lots of times, I just didn't know if it would be different for use with toys, especially larger ones. I do always make sure I've gone to the bathroom and have showered if I think we're going to do something there, just was unsure if it was different when it came to toys, especially larger ones.

Find hygienic, non-porous toys and use lots of lube. It doesn't really get that dirty. You can always add douching in later if you want to play around with it.

So long as you have a good diet douching isn't strictly necessary. Sometimes it can put you more at ease mentally though, knowing that no nasty surprises are going to be encountered while you're in the middle of things.

It's not necessary, but if it makes you feel better it doesn't hurt either. Just use plain warm water, soap is not only completely unnecessary, but it will also make you cramp.

I have never douched, and nothing embarrassing has ever happened.
I'm no doctor, but I do think having a high-fiber healthy diet has helped me in this regard.....this may be TMI but a healthy poo seems to leave the butt cleaner.

Depends on you and your partner.
Many people don't need it and are OK with that.
Some people need it to be clean every time because of their body makeup and/or diet.
Some people are uncomfortable with anal play without an enema. In this situation it's your call, but if your the bottom and you're worried then you and your bottom will probably find it hard to be really relaxed and comfortable, and this might be worth doing an enema.
Some people need it sometimes, depending on the day and what they eat. Others will just not have buttplay on those days. Personally I'd rather take the enema and have the buttplay if everything is working out except my bottom (as opposed to calling it off and maybe not doing it again for a while, depending on schedules and how she's feeling).
My advice is to take a few minutes alone with yourself and a toy in the bathroom. Go to the bathroom if possible, then slide the dildo in and see if you're clean enough to be comfortable. I have the Ultra Douche and it works pretty well. You don't strictly need to do an enema, though. I just like to do one before partnered anal play because of my own insecurities.

Wow, I really disagree with the majority. If I am alone and feel like I'm relatively clean, I'll often forego the enema. But, most of the time, even during solo play, I'll use an enema first. I would never feel comfortable with my bf hard thrusting without cleaning with an enema beforehand.
Like someone else mentioned in this thread, I just use the Fleet disposable enemas. I pour out the enema solution and refill with plain warm water. It may take 2-3 bottles, but I continue until the water runs clear.

I don't and it really isn't a problem for me but everyone's body is different and some people play differently. I've heard many say that if you are playing deep (over 8" say) is more prone to messes.

Not ENTIRELY necessary but if you just can't go poop and/or if you want to make SURE you're clean, definitely use an enema. We're quite clean with sex and don't risk unwanted surprises during/after anal, so we always make a bowel movement and shower (using an enema) beforehand. I'd say, get one if you plan on playing around with anal, but it's not necessary every time.

This may seem like an odd suggestion, but taking a bulk-forming fibre supplement (e.g. original Metamucil) daily can really make a difference in terms of cleanliness. It aids in complete, clean evacuation and is good for you, too. Just remember to get the kind that gels in water if you leave it for too long; the dissolving clear varieties aren't the same.
I generally feel clean, and have found douches to cause more irritation than they are worth in the past. One thing you should consider is that using too much water can lead to some of it becoming trapped higher up in the colon, and it may become problematic later in your endeavours when it decides to escape.
Furthermore, frequent douching/enema use can lead to dependency, making it difficult to evacuate the bowels without one. The mucous lining of the rectum also suffers, and you will likely require extra lubricant to prevent internal injury.

On a side note, I was iffy about any anal play after a VERY bad experience in a previous relationship, but with my hubby I am so happy and eager to engage in these things now that I am with someone who knows what he is doing. Just go slow and have patience in all anal play. Don't worry about doing any enema stuff before a session until you really feel the need to.
