I have never been able to find a good water-based lube. The main reason I hate water-based lubricants is because I've found many of them irritate my girly parts. I'm sure we're all aware of the harmful materials found in sex toys, but lubricants can contain harmful substances too.
Let's take a look at some of the sketchy ingredients found in some of our most beloved lubes:
Parabens- An antimicrobial preservative known to have hormone-disrupting effects, and cause allergic reactions.
Glycerin- Used to keep your lube nice and slick without getting sticky, but is also known to cause yeast infections.
Propylene Glycol – A cosmetic form of mineral oil used in lubricants to retain moisture. It can cause skin irritation, or even (albeit rare) kidney damage in more severe cases.
I would really like to see Eden Fantasys carry more organic lubes that don't contain harmful ingredients.

or
Firefly - link
Dodgy ingredients aside, I don't just want some hippie lube that ain't worth a damn either. I want safety and effectiveness. So take a look at some of the most popular water-based lubricants on the EF site, and weigh the pros and cons for yourself.

Which is the best lube?

Is it comparative to natural lubrication or does it have a synthetic slickness?

The only one of these I have used is Maximus. I would say that it is more of a synthetic slickness but I enjoy it very much regardless.

I've heard some good things from that Maximus lube. Hmm wow i never knew it had this stuff in it. I might reconsider my choice in lube now.
05/02/2009
Maximus is definitely sticky. O'My isn't sticky but it's not thin, either. Haven't tried the others...
05/02/2009
Maximus is thicker, but Pink water feels more natural, Oh My is a little more runny than the Pink Water. It is not completely thin, but of the three Pink Water is in the middle.
05/03/2009
Maximus had a wonderful consistency and thickness.
Maximus burned the heck out of me vaginally, and my boyfriend masturbation wise. Must be the parabens or something. O'My is a no-no with us because it has vegetable glycerin. Liquid Silk was just awful smelling, and I haven't tried the others.
The only ones I haven't had a reaction to yet that aren't on the list are Sliquid H2O, Sliquid Sassy, and the Slippery Stuff line, which EF doesn't carry.

A little off topic, but your description of proplyene glycol is not correct. It is not a cosmetic form of mineral oil - it's actually an alcohol and is completely water soluble. The reason it's on the "bad" list is because it can be an irritant to some. It is actually FDA approved as food safe, and its a nice moisturizer.
And it broke my heart in a thousand tiny little pieces when I found out liquid silk has parabens in in

Broke mine too. Except for the detail of unbearable burning sensations to someone like me who is sensitive to parabens, it's a glorious lube.

I'm a Sliquid H2O girl myself. We might try the Sliquid organics or Pink Water next, but we've got an 8.5 oz bottle to work our way through first. It's not the most long-lasting or really thick, but it works well for us otherwise, without irritating my poor lady bits.
05/04/2009
I just use Maximus for everything, yes it is a little thicker but I don't find it messy overall. Looking for a natural type lube now. I had a link but can't find it @ present.
05/04/2009
I've heard of a new product called DEFENSE PROTECTION LUBRICANT, which is 100% vegan friendly. I haven't had a chance to use any, but I did get some, and will let you know how it goes!

Doc Johnson's "Anal Lube" is always my go to lube for everything. Has never been irritating to me or my partners, is inexpensive, and also nearly tasteless. Great for vaginal/anal sex and masturbation.
01/01/2011
I love Pink Water the best. It's fragrant free, non-sticky, and very moisturizing. And the price is great!!
01/01/2011
I prefer Sliquid organics Gel.
02/09/2011
Out of those i have only used Sliquid, which was nice, and Liquid Silk (not my fave) but i would still try out the others on the list.
02/17/2011
Of those I prefer Maximus, but if you're really sensitive you may want to try Babelube - nice and thick like Maximus is, but paraben-free.
03/11/2011
Pink water is good, and sliquid brand. This is hard to pick one.

I prefer the sliquid brand

I like Pink water and Liquid Silk

Sliquid Organics (Gel or Liquid) is my favorite lube. It never irritates, and it is actually quite moisturizing. This might sound strange, but I once had an ingrown hair that I couldn't get rid of, and I spent a week just rubbing in the excess Sliquid, and it loosened it right up! So now I use copious amounts and just rub in the extra. Strange, but true.
08/31/2011
I went sliquid once, and I never went back.
09/01/2011
Maximus. Liquid silk is good too

Maximus is very thick and lasts a very long time. It's why I like it so much.
05/01/2009
See, I disagree about Maximus. Because it's thick, it doesn't seem to lubricate as much as I'd like. O'My is better because it's not as thick. However, I've found thinner lube to need even less application.
05/02/2009
Maximus has occasionally had to be reapplied for anal play with toys. Oh My has to be reapplied with long lasting sex. Again, Pink Water usually does not have to be at all for any form of sex.
05/03/2009
Maximus does a great job for anal but does have to be reapplied. For vaginal, works for me as my own lube takes over.

Maximus does not have a problem here.
05/01/2009
I have noticed the opposite. For vaginal sex, Maximus gets sticky sometimes, so can O my. This is with a partner. I have not had this happen as often with toys.
05/03/2009
Maximus is great for anal, vaginal, ok, but I try to use less. I have not been bothered by the stickiness. But it does dry rather quickly.

We've never felt the need to, but I guess I don't worry to overly much about parabens.
05/01/2009
With Oh my, and Maximus, Yes. It doe snot feel natural and can feel messy. With Pink Water it feels like me, and I even feel moisturized.
05/03/2009
liquid silk leaves everything feeling silky soft.
05/03/2009
I only used Liquid Silk once, it was a sample. I liked it but it was too thin. After using Maximus, I am not bothered by it unless I over lube.
After sex, I don't jump up and wash either myself or my toys. I enjoy the moment.

Maximus is my vote in all but number 3. It is a great all around lube for different types of play, and work well with toys where ever they may end up.
05/01/2009
I haven't tried any of these, and stick with my standby water-based (Ky), so None of the above for me. I am going to have to investigate these others a bit to see if they'd be safe for me to use.

HOLY WOWZERS...
Thanks for the post, my lube is loaded with stuff thats bad for me. >.<
I had no clue lube could be bad for you. I'll be watching this post closely for a decent upgrade.
I currently use ID Glide, it's good lube, but it has some bad stuff in it, but I have nothing to compare it to. There is probably better and worse lubes..
I wonder what else I have thats bad? I bet my gummy bears are some kind of industrial plastic. o.O

stuffed full ofu
We personally like the wet products.... It makes everything smooth and is water based so no oily residue!
05/02/2009
WE like the pink one better than any ones we have. The bottle is a chick bottle. It still works good.

I really like the silicone Pink, but the Pink Water has aspartame in it (I'm assuming as a substitute for glycerin), and I'm allergic to aspartame... darn.

Yes, We end up using the Pink Water more than the others. I like it best, and it works with my body better than the others. So I guess it being better for me makes it better for him too.
05/03/2009
I still love liquid silk the best of all of these. I'm interested in trying the sliquid version of liquid silk

I hadn't noticed that little fact... and ditto to not being able to deal with aspartame. So much for the idea of trying this one out.

I would go with Pink on that list as I have tried and liked it, but personally my fave lube has been and always will be Hathor.
08/04/2010
On that list I like Pink, but in general I go with JO water based
12/14/2010
I would consider any of these the best. Maybe add a few more options;-)
03/01/2011
In my opinion, the best water based lube is climax bursts
03/11/2011
Our favorite lube is Sliquid Ride H2O. It only has 4 ingredients, it doesn't irritate me, (and I am really sensitive to the same things you are) and it lasts a LONG time.
I don't know why it doesn't get more talk on the board. We've tested a lot of lubes and we love this one.
It is very thick. But, we like thick lubes as a lot of use is for anal play and anal sex. But, it works well with toys and for PIV also.
