PVC - just how bad is it?

I recently received a toy for review from a manufacturer that is made from PVC. The packaging says that it is Phthalate free but that is it.

So if PVC is free of phthalates is it safe to be used as a sex toy?

I've looked it up on Eden's list of materials but was wondering if their are any other negative attributes involved with using PVC.
