Or are they the same?

Hygienically, they're both top of the line. They won't trap bacteria and are easy to clean, and both can be boiled to sterilize them.
Structurally, I'd say that silicone is slightly safer, only because glass is completely rigid and it's possible to bruise yourself if you're too rough. If you're careful, though, the danger of that happening is minimal.

Both are hygienically safe. Like Rin said, you gotta be more careful with glass though because it could cause bruising if you're too rough.

Both!

I only voted glass because while silicone and glass are basically equal as far as safety goes, I voted glass because you can use ALL lubricants with glass but not silicone lubes with silicone toys. This can break the material down and mess up your toy. So glass does have that over silicone.

Plus, bruising and such are due to misuse or wrong sizing. If you learn your limits, they can be just as safe in that respect.

They're both the same, technically-speaking. As others have said, silicone is less "safe" in that you can't use silicone lubricant with it and glass is less safe in that it can bruise you. Also, though, glass has the ability to break easier and more importantly, it can chip or crack, which will allow bacteria to build up inside it, and that is NOT safe. So I guess silicone seems the safer bet.

they are both really safe. it's like apples and oranges to me really

I voted silicone over glass simply because it's easy to bruise yourself with glass.

glass runs the danger of shattering if you change it's temperture to fast.
04/08/2012
silicone only because it cant break really

I've heard great things about both in terms of porousness, but silicone can't break whereas glass can.

Thanks guys!

Definitely silicone, since it won't break into shards.

In the event that borosilicate glass does break, it breaks in huge chunks, not tiny shards. In other words, you would definitely notice before you use the toy.

These are both good materials.

Silicone, i'm a huge fan.
Glass has it's merits but the breakage factor makes it a second place for me.

Both are very high, but each has a flaw compared to each other. I guess it depends if you plan on being big with lubes are rough with it.

I agree. I think they are basically equal, but glass is better because you can use silicone lube with it.
