Finding a First Toy for Family Member

Contributor: Sir Sir 09/29/2010

I'm needing help from the people of the community with something very important - it's a purchase for a family member, preferably a couple's toy, that will both last and is well-made.

I directed them to Edenfantasys and went through the section of vibrators for them to pick out a few, and these are the ones that piqued their interest. If you would be able to tell me how these are, maybe suggest a few things of your own that I may have missed, please do. I really want to make this a special gift to them since their relationship, they have told me, has been sort of down lately.

Maybe even if you could give me help with a gift set to put together, like a nice vibrator, maybe some lubricant and something else, like a tickler or something?

Any and all suggestions appreciated! I did a pretty good job, but since I'm not a vibrator expert on ALL of the toys here, help would be great. Kits with lots of pieces to try are excellent too.

Choose one/multiple toys that you think would be best for my family member in need.

I just got my We-Vibe II and we LOVE it!! It does take some getting used to, like adjusting and getting into comfortable positions and whatnot. But I think it's the experimenting that makes this toy so fun! We are still experimenting with it, and having loads of fun while doing so, to the point we end up laughing so hard...good times!

Since you did not mention if they have tried toys or not, I chose two. For the experienced I say the We-vibe, really a vibe that both partners can feel at the same time, win, win.

For the newbies I think the Silicone play set gives a great variety of toys and lubes to experiment with.

I'd have to choose the We-Vibe 2 cause I have been seriously thinking of getting it myself.

I saw a promo for feathers and an eye mask the other day. I think that with a really nice vibrator and a lube that tastes good would be nice for a gift basket. It is so sweet of you to do this for that couple. I hope things start looking up for them soon.

I like the new Lelo ticklers link

I hear mixed things about the we-vibe and haven't tried it myself, but it does look pretty cool.

What about a smaller massager style vibe? They could use it not only for giving each other massages but also for sexual stimulation.

If you're looking for massage oil type stuff I have to recommend the intimate organics line, they're awesome and I've been completely satisfied with everything I have tried from them.

Well, I said "first toy." I thought that that cleared it up.

Yes, this is a FIRST first toy. They've tried cock rings a bit, but nothing other than disposable ones.

And no, nothing even slightly related to kink. She's not interested in that.

Thanks for all the responses, though! I really appreciate the help!

I have zero experience with any of the specific toys you listed. However, I have looked into the We-vibe II and my only concern would be that some reviews have stated concerns that the shape/size may not work for all bodies. I would be concerned that if your family member were one of these that it didn't work for, they would have a negative "first" experience and be turned off from sex toys altogether.

Get them a good one - some of those look sort of chintzy.

Hmmm... I realize the We-Vibe II is winning this poll, but I must say I have one and both myself and my partner were VERY disappointed with it. The vibrations were not very strong, it didn't stay in place or hit the right spots, and the toy easily bent out of shape. I don't recommend it.

Sorry about that, I must have had my eye's closed when I posted.

Have you made a decision?

I'm not sure if you've made a decision yet, but I saw the Boy meets girl kit and thought it would be great for a couple first starting out with toys. It combines too good quality basic items and packages them together very nicely. You could combine that with some lubricant or sensual massage oil for a nice gift.

Thanks for some more posts. I haven't really decided as this person is now no longer in a relationship, so I would feel bad giving her something like this...

Sir, I highly recommend either the LELO Liv or the Gigi for her first vibe. Either are great for solo and may help her get through this difficult time post-breakup.

I have both and, while I love both, I tend to prefer the Gigi because I absolutely love it as a clit vibe (though I know it is really meant for G-spot stimulation, at which it does a great job). However, it can be difficult to thrust with. The Liv is much better for thrusting and can still be used clitorally, too. So . . . I'm thinking perhaps Liv might be better overall?

Honestly, I'd seriously consider narrowing your search down to those two!

I picked the Silicone Play Set, as it gives a good overview of several toys. And it's silicone!

I don't actually own any of the toys you chose, My Man and I went right to big traditional phallic vibrators for our first purchase, and then silicone traditional vibes or dildos plus a Wahl. You said the woman isn't in a relationship anymore? Maybe a nice silicone vibe or dildo along with The Wahl, so she can get off until she recovers might be nice.

If I were single, a traditional vibe plus a Wahl or Hitachi would be invaluable. In fact, I'm NOT single and I think these two types of toys are invaluable!

Even thought I don't have it, I was underweight with the reviews of the We-Vibe. It sounds like a good idea, and I assume you can use it alone, but I, personally, like strong deep vibrations, and from what I have read, the We-Vibe isn't good for that. I guess if you know her Orgasmic Threshold you would know what toy would be best.

Good luck.

I second this. I was thinking something like this also:

Not sure where the price ranges are here, but there are a few different choices.
Love Essentials Kit or Carnal Pleasures Kit would make a nice romantic foreplay session. Serenity or Little Paul for her, and a nice beginner's cock ring.

I voted for the silicone playset because it is silicone and has some different things to it. I also voted for the We Vibe because it looks interesting, but I do own the Cunning Rabbit and it is a good bullet.

I also just purchased this egg for 9.99 and it is amazing!

So those are my choices for beginners! Good luck!

I'm so sorry to hear this. In light of this new information, I would suggest a nice vibrator for personal use. There are so many that are beautiful, well made, and non-threatening. I'm sure someone else can make a suggestion since I'm a vibe newbie but love to look at all the options. I'm so jealous of women!

I have the original we-vibe, and I wouldn't really recommend it for newcomers to sex toys. I think it will be great for some couples in some areas, but if the couple has never had a sex toy before, I would get them something with a wider variety of uses. As others have mentioned, it takes some experimentation to find the best positions for both partners with the we-vibe, and we got sick of dealing with it and have kind of retired it, especially since the battery life was so terrible (though maybe they improved this for the newer version?). It felt like we were constantly having to rearrange where the toy was, which kind of defeats the whole "hands free" appeal they were going for. Since the bit that goes on the clit was so small and bent at a specific angle, I had a hard time getting it to actually hit me in the right spots to do anything nice.

If a couple is new to sex toys, they should get one toy that can be used in a variety of situations. I'd get a Hitachi Magic Wand (if she likes a lot of power) or a small clitoral vibe that could be used as a massager on many surfaces, like the Lelo Siri or Fun Factory Layaspot. A toy that can be handheld and used easily with partners. If she's interested in g-spot play, I'd get a Fun Factory vibe. These are my "if you only buy one sex toy, buy this one" suggestions.

Actually, my best advice would be to point them towards the "Sex is Fun" podcast and then get them a giftcard to Edenfantasys. If their relationship isn't feeling so hot, I'd rather examine why that is and get them talking about the things they'd like to try together to spice it up instead of just bringing home a toy and hoping it's the right one.

I'm going to recommend this: link

I have it and love it, it's strong, you get two bullets which can be used at the same time, and it uses batteries that are easy to find and buy rather than little button batteries and such.

Oh no! I am sorry, I didn't even read past the post I quoted. I still say Serenity or Little Paul could work well for her. Also, I absolutely love my Perfectly Hot Pink but I'm not sure if that would be too big and firm for her. This might be something she could look at as well. Or even this!

Why not a nice silicone insertable or rabbit-type? Those are very flexible (in use).

I'd pick the silicone play set. It's got a lot of toys to sample and a good variety to it.

the we vibe truly is a toy for couples, giving pleasure to both parties.

And the best lube I've ever found is boy butter, but have a feeling it might not be compatible with silicone

I have a We-Vibe, and with all the toys I have "mastered" I still haven't figured out the best way to use this one and personally wouldn't recommend it as a first toy.

If she wants vibrations, I really like Evolved Novelties because they are compatible with both silicone and water based lubes as well as waterproof so very easy for a beginner to care for without a long list of Do's and Dont's. Croupier is my favorite, but the Short & Sweet are nice too.

If she doesn't want an insertable toy, I would probably go with something that is wireless because I hate wires but some people like those ones...something like LayaSpot or one of the Lelo Clitoral vibes maybe. The Fun Factory Minivibes are nice for clitoral stimulation too.

I just made a purchase from my big sister. I gave her an Eager Beaver years ago and she's killed it, so I told her "hey girl, I'll send you a new one because I do reviews on this great site...blah blah blah"...She really can't afford to buy new sex toys right now so I feel good about hooking her up. I already told her that when she comes for the holidays, she is free to go through my stash. I have two Jopen Vibes so I will probably give her the VR7 since it can be fully sterilized.

BUT if they still sell the Black Magic Kit that's a wonderful starting point and it's much cheaper. You get the traditional vibe (very strong), the pocket rocket (very strong), the bullet&controller, and the egg. + lubricant I believe.

We Vibe II is a high quality toy...but does not do much for my hubby or me, frankly. Even if it were perfect..and MANY seem to love it, for what you want, the SILICONE set, seems the MOST versatile and gives them all kinds of play options...from which they can learn and build upon what works best for them.

Tons of uses? I need to go back and look at other reviews. We spent a lot on that toy...and it sits unused in our toy drawer. Just didn't do a thing for either of us. Maybe I am missing something here?
