As for vibrators, I usually try it by placing on the bed, closing the doors and finding out if I can hear it in the hallway. We also have a white noise machine in our hallway AND a humidifier. They both cut down on the sound. In our experience, the Hitachi is one of our louder toys. Not as loud as the Marble G, but still loud. We had a few questions about the Hitachi's noise, but I was actually giving My Man a back massage with it, so it wasn't embarrassing.

Mine are probably about average for sound. Not really loud(except my oldest one, which I really need to replace soon!) but not discreetly quiet.

The quietest vibes I own are the Alia and the Little Dolly. They're both about the same are far as noise, but in shape the Alia is definitely more discreet. The problem is, it's much pricier than the Dolly. I've never used either in a public place, though.

The Wahl 2 speed is super quiet, especially on low, I can hardly hear it even when I'm holding it.

I choose vibrators with no more than 3 bees and have been fine in my room with housemates. I also tend to have a fan running and are at least partway under covers, so it helps in muffling any noise that could possibly be heard. Now all I need is a solution for my squeaky mattress!
