I have heard of this happening as well because "precum" or pre ejaculate can contain sperm and if these sperm get to the egg then they can fertilize it and someone could get pregnant. This is why they say this method doesnt work that well. Also I have read that not all guys can pull out fast enough and some sperm may be released into the vagina.

Yep. When I had a uterus I became pregnant with ridiculous ease. I can testify for you that premature withdrawal is NOT reliable. In fact, I had run out of diaphragm jelly so I had a diaphragm in (w/o jelly) and used premature withdrawal. Still ended up pregnant.

Well, I don't want to mislead anyone into thinking that the pull-out method would be safe for them, but that is the only birth control method my husband and I have ever used (except for condoms for the first couple of years when we started having sex). He is so adamant against having a baby that he ALWAYS withdraws and finishes off the last minute or so to climax manually. He has never "finished off" inside of me. I've never gotten pregnant (though I have fervently prayed and wished for an "accident") . . . and we've used the "pull-out" method for about thirteen years.

Yep, my daughter was a result of the pull out method! I can definitely say it is NOT reliable!

We've used the pull out method quite a lot for a year and a half. Not every time, but the majority of the time. And I've never gotten pregnant. Sometimes I think there might be something wrong with my uterus; or maybe I'm just one of those girls who doesn't get pregnant easily.

I read up a bit more about this because its my condom-hating son's chosen technique. IF the male has perfect control and can pull out before ejaculation, you're pretty safe the first time since there isn't sperm in pre-cum. However there will be enough soldiers left in the urethra to cause pregnancy and they will come out in the next pre-cum. Only if the male pees between times - and has 100% perfect control - do you have any measure of safety.

I still say its playing with fire.

Interesting, it's nice to hear both sides of the story about the withdrawal method.

Definitely not a reliable method of birth control, for various reasons. I'm not sure why the people I know got pregnant, but I know a few who have and I'll bet that was it. xP

I know a few who have gotten pregnant with condoms, but I think they were probably using them improperly.

So the thing is, only if there is sperm stuck in the urethra BEFORE the sex, you are screwed. However, if you pee, and successfully pull out in time, you will be fine since the urine clears out the semen.

That's the golden rule. However, most are unaware of this. Half of the kids born in my family were the result of this issue. Just talked about this the other day at my cousin's birthday party.

This!

It can technically work, but I wouldn't depend on it if you're not completely ready to have kids. And know that if you ever tell me that you're relying on this method and cannot handle kids at the time, then I will slap you upside the head HARD. I would rather buy a friend's condoms for them than have them depending on that method and not be able to handle the possible failure...

No, I've not. I was pregnant twice, miscarried both times ( due to endometriosis. Our method wasn't the pull-out though.

not myself personally but i've had a few friends. it's a terrible method and i have no idea who the fool was that popularized it. sadly, i know lots of people think that it's an awesome replacement for a condom/ legit birth control method

Never have gotten pregnant but used to use the pull-out method and only had sex when I wasn't ovulating, glad I don't do this anymore, it was too stressful.

I guess that's why this method is so successful for us---my husband maintains absolutely stringent control, motivated by the most adamant desire to avoid becoming a parent. He withdraws early enough to have to finish off manually. He has never "messed up" and come inside me---not even just a little bit. And there is never a second round, so to speak, just so he can be extra cautious.

Not me, but my parents did... if they had used a more reliable birth control method, I wouldn't have been born (I was the fourth, and they really hadn't been planning on having another child).

so yay for the pull out method?

My ex and I used the pull out method for 2 years and I did not get pregnant, although I always joked that he had super sperm because his baby mama had been told by doctors she could never get pregnant and he did the trick! But my niece was a pullout baby, lol.

My husband and I have always done that except maybe for the first few years when we were married I was on birth control, but once we decided to have kids I quit birth control and let him come inside and immediately got pregnant. Used the pull out method again until we were ready for #2. Came inside immediately pregnant. Pull out method again with no accidents and the youngest will be 3 in March. We'd be the couple that it would happen to if it ever did b/c we just get pregant without any hassel. I also watch when I'm ovulating as well though.

We use withdrawal and have for years. He always urinates before sex. This cleans out the urethra so there will be no semen in the "pre cum."

I have never gotten pregnant from withdrawal, despite being very fertile. The only time I got pregnant without planning it was when we were using "Natural Family Planning." I think they want you to get pregnant. I got pregnant during my "safe time" more than once.

Actually, there are millions of sperm in pre-ejaculate fluid.

If the man urinates since his last ejaculation will usually be NO sperm in pre-ejaculate fluid.

People are told not to use Withdrawal, because many men simply don't have the control to perform the technique right.

Planned Parenthood endorses the method for a couple in a dedicated relationship who are already fluid bonded and where the man has good ejaculation control. It is often also suggested for couples where both or either are allergic to latex and are unable to use a smaller size polyisproine or plastic condom and for couples where the woman is unable to use hormonal birth control and most different kinds of barrier methods.

We've used it for years without an unwanted pregnancy. I got pregnant while using "Natural Family Planning" during my "Safe Time" but withdrawal has always worked really well for my husband and I.
