How often do you or your partner get a Urinary Tract Infection?

Contributor: leatherlover leatherlover
My wife just got another uti, which is strange because she just came off of her period and we only had sex twice before the uti showed up. My question is, how often do others get a uti in the period of a year? It seems like my wife gets one every 3-4 months, even though we try to do everything to prevent them. Any tips would also be appreciated.

It's been eight years since my wife had one. The only thing we can think of as her reason not to get them is she always pees after sex. I have never had one.

I get them quite often, but I also have a kidney disease so it's not abnormal for me. I've been told going pee before and after sex, going commando, wearing loose fitting pants, and staying VERY hydrated all help.

It has been at least 5 years since my last UTI. My doctor recommended that I urinate immediately after, and if I could remember to, before sex. I started doing that and I have not had a single issue since. She also told me increasing water intake and cutting out soda or other sugary drinks and reducing sodium would help too. Like I said, it has made a huge difference for me.

I rarely get them but when I do it's a mess. I always pee right after sex and I don't jump in the shower or bath for at least 6-8 hours after. No douching, very little caffein (caffein laced products seem to irritate my bladder), drink plenty of water and cranbwerry juice. I avoid doing abdominal exercizes every day as that can irritate my bladder (mine is over sized). Fully empty my bladder everytime I pee and never ever hold it.

I do not do urethral play as that can cause a UTI for me, wipe from front to back and keep my urethera clean of debris.

I ramp up on juices during and after my period as well as keeping really well hydrated.

I used to get them all the time. Simply peeing after sex and masturbation every time completely stopped them though, thank god.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My wife always pees after sex, and when she wipes she will wipe only once from front to back. We don't drink soda or coffee very often, so caffeine is not an issue. We both think that it somehow happened during her period, just not sure how. I will tell her to try to drink more cranberry juice around her period.

Even though I know this was not the factor, because we only used lube right as she started to feel the signs, does anyone think certain lubes can be a factor?

I've actually never had one. I do tend to pee both before and after sex, so I'm sure that's a factor.

I do sometimes have overactive bladder problems and cranberry juice helps a ton to take care of that.

I think I've only ever had one in my life soooo other.

But some people just have genetic predispositions to getting them so your wife may not have done anything to cause it. So just continue your current precautions and see a doctor if things get worse or don't clear up.

I have had a few extremely mild ones. My body seems to fight them very quickly before they get to take hold. I have only had a very mild sting while urinating (and the feeling of needing to go afterwards which I ignore) and then the next time I do go it's cleared up.
I just hope it continues that way.

I didn't realise sex could cause them (sex has never been an issue to me - touch wood) but at least I now know if it does happen.

It could certainly be a factor, you could try experimenting...also talk to P'Gell she's a nurse and from what I've read on the forums is a sufferer of frequent UTI.

It could be that whatever products your wife uses on her period is irritating her urethera. Could be a pad resting up against her skin or a tampon drying out the area. If you notice she gets them close to the time her flow is light she could try using a very light flow type pad or tampon. If she uses a washable pad then try changing the material the pad is made of and using a milder baby formula laundry detergent. Speaking of which it could be either laundry detergent, fabric softener or whatever dryer sheets you use causing the problem...making the cotten crotch of her panties cause the problem. I know if my sister uses Tide products she has a UTI pretty much the next day after wearing her underwear.

I had one ever, and I think it was because I didn't change my pads in time during my period. Now I am paranoid and drink cranberry juice and take cranberry tablets every day.

Thanks again for the comments everyone. I never realized that some people have rarely or never had one. I guess my wife is just more inclined to have them. Oh well.

Neither my partner nor I have had one since we have been married. She had experience with a UTI before we were married, but I think only once. I guess we have been fortunate (knock on wood).

I have only had one before, a long time ago, when I was a kid and my teacher refused to let me go to the bathroom all day.

She may be naturally more inclined, but Airen Wolf is right that the lube and/or feminine products that she's using could be contributing to them. Hydration can also be a big issue, particularly during heavy flow times.

There is a product called D-Mannose that has helped a lot of people that I know in both preventing and clearing up UTIs. She might want to try taking that during her period and for a couple of days after. Cranberry juice is something a lot of women use, but be careful not to over do that because it can make her more prone to kidney stones (because of the oxalates).

Urinary tract infections can be caused by just about anything. That's no joke. A pubic hair getting itself wedged in the urethra, or a position that manipulates her urethra in a way it's not used to, or not being lubricated enough, or not rinsing well enough after washing, or... I mean, just about anything.

Try to help her keep an eye on her eating and drinking habits around when she gets them. Sometimes I forget to drink (especially when I'm cold), and dehydration causes me to get one. And there's all sorts of stuff you can do to protect against them, like using gloves, dental dams, and condoms.

Yup, to counteract the problem I drink straight cranberry juice mixed with water in a 1:1 ratio. This was what my Doc. suggested.

My wife use to get them more often - but it doesn't happen often anymore - less than 1 per year. I on the other hand very rarely get them - but my last one was very nasty. I had ridden my bike for over 7 hours one day, then had sex that night. Apparently too tired to urinate after sex and my immune system compromised by the long ride - I got a raging infection that took Cipro to get rid off.

So I'm very careful now when I've worked out very hard.

At one point I was getting them as often as your wife, and I ended up having a kidney stone after about 3 years or so of somewhat frequent UTI's. After that I almost completely stopped drinking soda (I drank wayyy to many!) and switched to lots of water. I haven't had one since thank god! Also knocking on wood...

I take cranberry tablets and always try to urinate before and more importantly after sex.

I had a couple of UTI's back when I first started having sex because I was using vaginal contraceptive film that irritated me and I didn't realize it. Then when I started using condoms again when I lost my health insurance and couldn't afford pills, I started getting UTI's and yeast infections again, sometimes at the same time. I got back on the pill and haven't had an infection since. I'm apparently just very sensitive.

I only get one or two a year. I guess I'm lucky.
